Scenario 6: The Battle of the Katzbach 26 th of August 1813 The Army of the Bober under Marshall MacDonald meets the Army of Silesia under Blucher crossing the Katzbach. Under a storm (that rendered useless the muskets) both armies attempts to destroy the enemy in an encounter battle. 6.1 Map: The Katzbach battlefield. N A 1 2 3 4 5 EICHHOLTZ NEISSE R. Cavalry units as well as infantry units in line can also ford, but become disordered. Artillery must cross only at bridges. Katzbach R. is unfordable. 6.1.3: All open terrain low areas (not on a hill area) are considered mud terrain 6.1.4: Due to the rain, all infantry units have a "-7" fire modifier excepting when firing from a building. Maximum visibility is 65 cm. During close combat a roll of "1" indicates a blunder combat. No fires may be started 6.1.5: The Allied units are first set-up. The values must be equal or less than: 4 (for 17,00 h.), 5 (for 17,30 h.), 6 (for 18,00 h. and subsequent turns) 6.4.5. Both armies have seven free rolls. The French have the initiative. 6.5 Victory Conditions The buildings of Eichholtz and Nieder-Crayn are worth 120/192 victory points each for Allied/French. The other buildings and the three bridges are worth 60/96 victory points for Allied/French. 3 17/03/03 (9:11)

6.6 Historical Katzbach The rain did much to obscure the opposing forces and MacDonald sent Lauriston and Gerard onto the attack while he attempted to continue his build-up of forces across the Neisse river. Blucher realized the vulnerability of the French forces across the Neisse river and sent his forces in repeated attacks to take the vital bridge at Neider Crayn. Lauriston and Gerard's attacks did well and pushed the Russians all the way back to Hermansdorf but it was the fighting on the other side of the Neisse river that decided the battle. The Prussian and Russian cavalry made repeated charges against the French and with infantry support and were eventually able to break through and rout the French. French losses where heavy as the one bridge made for an easy killing ground. Many Frenchmen drowned in the Neisse trying to escape. This victory won Blucher his title of Prince. 4 17/03/03 (9:11)

NOTES a For infantry in square, use the other (OT) modifier if vs. any infantry. For infantry not in square, use the OT modifier if vs. any attacking cavalry, and not in a town, entrenched, or with friendly cavalry in the same combat. For attacking cavalry, use the OT modifier vs. infantry or artillery not in square and not in a town, entrenched, or with friendly cavalry in the same combat. Use the current modifier in all other combats. b The RSP (Response) number is used for cavalry recalls (with a -1 modifier for Austrian HC and LC, a -4 for british (not KGL) and -2 for all other cavalry), rallying and for square (with a +1 for Prussian GD, GN and LN in line formation until 1809, +2 for Austrian GN and LN in column formation after 1807, and +1 for all other infantry in column formation. General RSP modifiers are: -1 if Poor, +1 if Good and +2 if Excellent. The disorder modifier is -3. A modified RSP number is also the withdrawal modifier. c ROUTS Infantry and gunners 46 cm, cavalry and limbered artillery 69 cm.
