MEET THE FRIARS... The 2012-13 Providence College women s hockey team will look to continue it s success from the 2011-12 season, where the team fell to #9 Boston University in the Hockey East Championship. The Friars will replace a strong seven person graduating class with eight newcomers. The eight freshmen will be led by 15 well balanced upperclassmen, including senior, Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario). Vella led the team in power-play goals (3) and tallied a career high 18 points for the Friars during the 2011-12 season. Also representing the forwards from the upperclassmen is junior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.), who was fourth on the team in scoring with 26 points on 11 goals and 15 assists. Buie also led the team in game winning goals (4). Freshmen, Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) will look to make an immediate impact for the Friar offense after representing the United States at the Under-18 World Championships last January. The Friars return six defensemen from the 2011-12 team, including junior Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.). Morse led the team in plus/minus with a rating of plus 14 and tallied 14 points off of three goals and 11 assists. Morse is joined by junior Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) who was second on the team in plus/minus with a plus 13. The Friars will return five of their top ten point scorers. Two new goaltenders will join junior Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.), who posted a 3-1-2 record last season with the Friars. Riley earned Hockey East Goaltender of the Week honors on January 11th, 2012. Riley and the two newcomers will look to fill the void left by Genevieve Lacasse 12. SCOUTING McGILL...McGill finished it s 2011-12 season with a bronze medal in the CIS championship. The 2011-12 team also won the Quebec League Championship in a best-of-three series over Montreal. The Martlets return 16 players from their 2011-12 roster and welcome five newcomers to the team. The team will have played in four exhibition games prior to facing off with Providence. Two of the games were played against the Lac St. Louis Royals Boys Midget Espoirs, while the other two were played in the Gaels 2012 Triangular Series Tournament. The Martlets defeated both Guelph and Queens at the tournament. Katia Clement- Heydra was the Martlets star player of the two game tournament series. Heydra scored the shootout winner against Queens and also notched an assist earlier in the first period. During the game against Guelph, Heydra led the team from a two-goal deficit with three goals and an assist. The Martlet crease has been shared by three goaltenders the last two games. Taylor Hough, Taylor Salisbury and Andrea Weckman have all been in the net. Salisbury leads the trio with 24 saves on 25 shots. THE ALL-TIME SERIES WITH McGILL... Providence goes into Saturday s game with a 7-1-0 record against the Martlets. The Friars have scored a staggering 45 goals against the Martlets, while only allowing 12 in the seven victories they captured. FULL FRIAR STAFF... Head- Coach Bob Deraney and the Friars welcome back Meredith Roth to the coaching staff after a leave to pursue her Master s in Sports Management. Former Friar defensemen Melanie Ruzzi joins the coaching staff as well. Ruzzi spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Harvard. Both coaches bring a wealth of knowledge, passion and excitement to the coaching staff. Genevieve Lacasse will also join the staff as a graduate assistant as she pursues her MBA at Providence College. Lacasse will help work with 2012-2013 WHEA Preseason Coaches Poll Rk. the goaltenders as Bob Bellemore steps down after 19 years as an assistant coach for Deraney. The last to join the Deraney staff is Justin Simpson. Simpson, cousin of former Friar Brittany Simpson 09, will be head of hockey operations for the team. FRESHMEN... The 2012-13 Providence team welcomes eight new players each having something different to offer the team. The aggressive Friar offense gains four newcomers. Molly Illikainen played for the U-18 US National team earlier this year and will bring an incredible amount of skill to her center position. Prentice Basten (Buffalo, Minn.) and Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) are both aggressive and will be able to keep the pressure on the opposing defense. This aggressiveness is key to a Friar offense that thrives on putting pressure on other teams in their defensive zone. The last forward to join the Friars is Courtney Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn.). Kukowski will help fill the roles of those top point-producing seniors from the 2011-12 season. The defensive core welcomes Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) and Lexi Slattery (Lino Lakes, Minn.). Both defensemen will create offense from their natural defensive positions. They are always looking to strike both offensively and defensively, adding another dimension to the team. Goaltenders Sarah Bryant (Bethleham, Pa.) and Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) will look to fill the void left by Lacasse. The two play a stand up, hybrid style that allows them to smother opponents. They will help the Friars keep the puck out of the net with their explosive and agile play. The eight freshmen will look to make an immediate impact for the young Friar squad. 2011-12 FINAL TEAM STATS Overall: 16-17-4, Conference: 11-8-2 Home: 8-7-2, Away: 7-7-2, Neut: 1-3-0 Goals Per Game...(2.6) Goals Allowed Per Game...(2.1) Shot Percentage... Providence loses seven key seniors for the 2012-13 season. The senior class left big shoes to fill as the top three point-getters for the Friars during the 2011-12 season were seniors Abby Gautheir, Ashley Cottrell and Laura Veharanta. Kate Bacon also cracked top-ten for the Friars during the 2011-12 season in points, goals, power-play goals, game-winning goals and plus/minus. The blue liners lose defensemen Christie Jensen and Jennifer Friedman, both receiving Hockey East Honors during their careers. They will not only be missed for their efforts in the defensive zone but the offensive zone as well. Friedman had a career total of 58 points and Jensen a total of 22. Leaving the biggest shoes of all to fill is net minder Genevieve Lacasse, who broke all but one school record during her four year career. The standout goaltender played in 127 games for the Friars with a record 3,482 career saves. Lacasse finished with a.933 save percentage and a 1.96 goals against average. She received numerous Hockey East Awards and Honors throughout her career and continues to play at the National level for Team Canada. 2011-12 SEASON AWARDS... The Friars finished with an amazing 7-2-1 that led them seven seconds shy of another Hockey East Championship. Four separate seniors were recognized for their play throughout the year and during the Hockey East Tournament. Defensemen Jennifer Friedman was named Honorable Mention All-Star. Forward Ashley Cottrell was awarded the Hockey East Sportsmanship Award for her clean play throughout the season. Defensemen Christie Jensen and Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their standout play during the Hockey East Tournament. Lacasse was also named to the All-Hockey East Second Team. 2011-12 WEEKLY/ MONTHLY AWARDS Oct. 24 Beth Hanrahan Co-Rookie of the Week Nov. 7 Laura Veharanta Player of the Week Nov. 28 Nicole Anderson Co-Player of the Week Jan. 9 Nina Riley Def.
