William & Mary senior Claire Zimmeck earned second team All-America honors, while JMU junior Corky Julien, W&M senior Dani Collins and Northeastern freshman Veronica Napoli received third team All-America accolades. Julien was also chosen to Soccer America s Women s MVP second team. Zimmeck was named an All-American for the third straight year after tallying 15 goals and six assists, while Collins made her second consecutive All-America squad after posting career-highs of four goals and six assists. Julien, the CAA Player of the Year, finished with 16 goals, while Napoli, the CAA Rookie of the Year, contributed 12 goals and five assists. Twelve Players Named All-Region By NSCAA: Twelve CAA players earned All- Region honors from the NSCAA, including seven first-team picks. In the Mid-Atlantic region, JMU s Corky Julien, ODU s Katie Watson and W&M s Claire Zimmeck and Dani Collins made the first team, while JMU s Teri Maykoski and Kim Germain were chosen to the second team. In the Northeast region, Northeastern s Veronica Napoli was joined on the first team by Hofstra s Jess Crankshaw and Tiffany Yovino. The Pride s Marie Curtin was selected to the second team and teammate Edel Malone was a third-team pick. In the Southeast region, UNCW s Kelly Renkin received second-team honors. JMU Ranked In Top 20 Nationally In Final Polls: James Madison was ranked in the top 20 nationally in a pair of season-ending polls. The Dukes were ranked #18 by Soccer Buzz and #19 by the NSCAA. JMU posted a 14-7-2 record and reached the final 16 of the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship. W&M s Zimmeck Selected As Hermann Trophy Semifinalist: W&M senior forward Claire Zimmeck was one of 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the nation s top collegiate soccer player. Zimmeck, who was also a semifinalist in 2007, contributed 15 goals and six assists for the Tribe this season and finished her career with 57 goals, including 25 match-winners. Tribe s Lauer Named Academic All-American: William and Mary senior Abby Lauer was chosen to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team. Five CAA players earned Academic All-District honors. In District 1, Hofstra s Tiffany Yovino made the second team and the Pride s Jess Crankshaw was on the third team. In District 3, Lauer was a first-team pick, while teammate Dani Collins was on the second team and VCU s Stephanie Power made the third team. JMU Falls To #2 Portland In NCAA Third Round: James Madison dropped a 3-2 decision to 2nd-seeded Portland in the third round of the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship. The Dukes jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:23 into the match on a goal by Teresa Rynier, but the Pilots, who were riding an 18-match winning streak, responded with three straight goals. JMU cut the margin to one on Corky Julien s team-leading 16th goal of the year with 7:08 remaining, but couldn t get the equalizer. It was JMU s first trip to the final 16 of the NCAA s since 1996. Dukes Knock Off Wake Forest In NCAA Second Round: James Madison upset #3 seed Wake Forest 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the final 16. Senior Lindsay Bowers scored the game-winning goal with 8:57 remaining off assists from Teresa Rynier and Yolie Anderson-Golhor. JMU keeper Diane Wszalek made three saves and posted her sixth shutout. In other second-round action, William & Mary fell to Duke 1-0 and Northeastern was beaten 4-0 by Boston College.

UNC Wilmington WOMEN S SOCCER 2008 FINAL All Three CAA Teams Win First-Round NCAA Games: For the second year in a row, the CAA had three teams advance to the second round of the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship. James Madison edged Georgia 1-0, William & Mary rallied past South Carolina 3-2 in overtime and Northeastern advanced past Harvard 4-2 on PK s after playing to a 2-2 tie. JMU scored on an own goal in the 57th minute after a hard pass from Teresa Rynier was redirected into the net. JMU keeper Diane Wszalek made a career-high 11 saves. W&M got a pair of goals from senior Claire Zimmeck, including the game-winner just 2:03 into overtime, to defeat USC. Senior Dani Collins contributed a goal and an assist and senior Abby Lauer had two assists. Freshman Kelly Matthews scored both goals for Northeastern in regulation and then converted the game-winning penalty kick. Freshman keeper Stephanie Gordon recorded three saves and then stopped a pair of PK s to secure the win. Three CAA Teams Earn NCAA Tournament Berths: CAA champion Northeastern, James Madison and William & Mary were selected to the 64-team field for the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship. It was the second year in a row and the third time since 2004 that three CAA teams were in the NCAA s. Northeastern made its first NCAA appearance, JMU made its ninth trip in the past 14 years, and W&M was in the field for the 16th time in the past 17 seasons. CAA History In NCAA Championship: The CAA has placed two or more teams in the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship field for 14 of the past 16 seasons. Last year, the conference had three teams (Hofstra, James Madison and William & Mary) advance to the second round for the first time in league history and the CAA repeated that feat this season. JMU was the first CAA team to advance to the third round of the NCAA s since 1999. Northeastern Edges Hofstra In CAA Championship Game: Junior forward Liza Rebello s goal with 5:06 left in the second overtime gave sixth-seeded Northeastern a 1-0 victory over #5 Hofstra in the CAA championship game. It was the first CAA women s soccer title for the Huskies in their fourth year as a member of the league. On the deciding play, NU freshman Gabbi Jatkola lofted a shot from just outside the box that Hofstra keeper Krystal Robens slid and stopped with her feet. Rebello charged in, took the ball away and scored into the open net. The victory was the fifth in a row for NU, all of which were on the road. Huskies keeper Stephanie Gordon made four saves and recorded her seventh shutout. Hofstra out-shot NU 16-9 in the contest, including 9-1 in the second half. Variety of Champions: Northeastern became the sixth different team in the past seven years to win the CAA Women s Soccer Championship. Hofstra (2005, 2007) is the only team during the seven-year stretch to win a pair of CAA titles. James Madison claimed its second conference title in 2002. William & Mary, which has won a league-high seven tournament crowns, won its last CAA championship in 2003. VCU took home its first title in 2004 and Old Dominion captured its first championship in 2006. Hofstra, Northeastern Pull Upsets In CAA Semifinals: Sixth-seeded Northeastern beat #2 James Madison 2-1 and #5 Hofstra knocked off #1 William & Mary 3-2 in the semifinals of the CAA Women s Soccer Championship. JMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead on NU on senior Kim Germain s penalty kick, but the Huskies drew even in the 59th minute on a goal by Gabbi Jatkola. Senior Jenna Lucchesi scored the game-winner from 10 yards out with 7:45 remaining. Hofstra fell behind 2-1 on W&M on Claire Zimmeck s goal in the 52nd minute, but got the equalizer seven minutes later as Jess Crankshaw found the net from 20 yards out. Sophomore Tiffany Yovino chipped the ball over the head of W&M keeper Meghan Walker in the 62nd minute for the Pride game-winner.

Hofstra fell behind 2-0 early at ODU, but got a penalty kick goal from Jess Crankshaw late in the first half and the equalizer from Courtney Breen early in the second half. The Pride came out on top when Krystal Robens stopped ODU s fourth penalty kick. Six CAA Teams Ranked Regionally By Soccer Buzz: Six CAA teams were ranked regionally by Soccer Buzz in its final polls. In the Mid-Atlantic region, James Madison was ranked #3, followed by William & Mary at #6 and Old Dominion at #9. In the Northeast region, Northeastern was ranked #6 and Hofstra was ranked #7. In the Southeast region, UNC Wilmington was ranked #14. In the final NSCAA regional poll, JMU and W&M were tied at #4 and ODU was #9 in the Mid-Atlantic and Hofstra was #7 and Northeastern was #9 in the Northeast. JMU s Julien Chosen As CAA Player of the Year: James Madison junior forward Corky Julien was chosen as the CAA women s soccer Player of the Year, becoming the first from JMU to ever receive the honor. Julien scored at least one goal in a school-record nine consecutive matches this season, all of which came against CAA foes.
