Meet the Coaches Head Coach Michael Kelly Michael Kelly during his playing days at St. Joseph s (ME). Michael Kelly begins his second season as Rhode Island College s Head Men s Basketball Coach. In addition to his coaching duties, he also serves as RIC s Coordinator of Intramurals. Kelly was previously an Assistant Men s Basketball Coach at Davidson College from August of 1999 through July of 2001. During his two-year stint with the Wildcats, Kelly was responsible for practice and game coaching, scouting of opponents, individual workouts, strength & conditioning and he coordinated the film exchange program. He assisted in the monitoring of academics and was responsible for all basketball travel and team functions. In addition, he served as the camp director for the Bob McKillop Basketball Camp. Prior to taking the Davidson job, Kelly was an Assistant Men s Basketball Coach at Virginia Tech University from August of 1996 through July of 1999. His duties included coordinating recr uiting, monitoring the team s academic progress, assisting in scouting and game preparation and the coordination of the film exchange and editing pr ogram. Kelly began his coaching career in July 1993 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as an Assistant Men s Basketball Coach, a position he held until July of 1996. He was responsible for game and practice coaching, as well as recruiting and scouting. During his tenure at the USMMA, he also served as an admissions assistant and was the assistant equipment and facilities manager. Kelly is an experienced basketball camp clinician and speaker. His basketball travels have included stops in Europe. He has coached and conducted camps in several countries including Ireland, Belgium, Italy and France. As an undergraduate, Kelly was a point guard while at St. Joseph s College (ME). He led the team to a district championship and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament in both 1992 and 1993. He earned a bachelor s degree in business administration in 1993. Kelly hails from Yarmouth, Massachusetts and is a 1989 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth High School. Kelly resides in Johnston, Rhode Island with his wife Jill. Michael Kelly and his wife Jill. 7

Meet the Coaches Assistant Coach Chris Sparks Chris Sparks begins his first season as an Assistant Men s Basketball Coach at Rhode Island College. Sparks will assist Head Coach Michael Kelly with all phases of the RIC men s basketball program including recruiting, scouting, administering practices and game coaching. Sparks previously served as an assistant men s basketball coach at the University of New England since the fall of 1999. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Southern Maine where he was a three-year letterwinner in men s basketball. He owns a bachelor s degree in history from USM. A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Sparks is a 1995 graduate of Wilbraham & Monson A c a d e m y. In addition to his coaching duties, Sparks is a special education t eacher in Providence. He is single and resides in Providence, Rhode Island. Assistant Coach Dan Kelley Dan Kelley begins his first season as an Assistant Men s Basketball Coach at Rhode Island College. Kelley will assist Head Coach Michael Kelly with all phases of the RIC men s basketball program including recruiting, scouting, administering practices and game coaching. Prior to coming to RIC, Kelley served as the Head Girls Junior Varsity Coach at Seekonk High School as well as an assistant coach with the girls varsity team in 2001-02. He was a varsity Boys and Girls Assistant Basketball Coach at Southgate Anderson High School in Southgate, Michigan from 1998-2001. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kelley graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1997 with a bachelor s degree in education. He is currently studying to earn his Master s Degree in Secondary Administration at Providence College. He resides in North Kingstown, Rhode Island with his wife Michelle.
