PEN& INKCYCLINGART THE CYCLING ART OF MICHAEL VALENTI

My bike will take me everywhere. The best thing about being a cyclist is that I know, like you do, that at any given moment I can throw a leg over my saddle and be in a whole new place in a matter of minutes. From a trail I ve ridden thousands of times to a new road I didn t know existed. My bicycle is a magical machine that takes me everywhere. My pen can take me anywhere. But as good as my bicycle is, my pen is better. Where my bike has physical limitations, my pen has none. I can go anywhere, do anything and be anyone with my pen in hand. That s what this little book is about. The journey of my pen.

Black and white What I love about pen & ink is the simplicity; there are no second chances. You can t over think the drawing. It either works or it doesn t. You like what you did, or you toss it in the rubbish and try again. I just wiggle my way around a page and continue to commit as I go. Most of the time it works. Some of the time it works really well. Passion and vision When I stand over a blank sheet of paper I can see what I m going to draw before it s there. I believe this is a gift I was given. I did nothing to earn it, for me it s like breathing. When my pen moves across the page the image falls out with very little effort. It s like when you find that perfect cadence and you don t have to work too hard, that s drawing for me.

Big and little A very basic rule of good design is to make something big and something little. What that means to me is to look for shapes on a page that can create positive and negative space. This provides a visual tension beyond content which in turn, creates an interesting picture to look at.

Think it. See it. Draw it A good many of my Cycling Art Posters and prints start out as pen and ink drawings. This is how I think through a problem. I draw it. Once it s clear to me I can assess it s potential and either put it aside or continue to refine the idea. That s how my large format color prints come to life. Old and new I m a masher, not on my bike, but here in the studio. I mash old bikes, clothes and equipment with new riders and technology. I don t care if I m period correct to me it s all cycling. So I steal from the romantic glory days of the past and meld them with the excitement of today s modern peloton. I d like to think this will make my work timeless. Like a really good black and white photo.

Connection is everything As an artist I believe the work that falls out of me is connected to something bigger. There are universally shared feelings that are not just mine. Things I can t explain but know to be true. This intuition has served me well though out my life, it helps me be a good communicator and a visual problem solver. Being able to connect with like-minded people is a big part of my work. And it has always worked for me that if I like something I ve created, many people will like it also. It s like I have an inner focus group that keeps me on track with people. But I try not to think too much about it, I just know it.

Life is short have some fun The best part of my day is always the part where I make myself smile.

The power of images On occasion I ll draw a picture that has a deeper meaning to the viewers it is intended for. This image of a young African girl on a Buffalo bike that I drew for World Bicycle Relief is a good example. Team Dimension Data - ride for Qhubeka, who are in turn are connected to World Bicycle Relief. In this image I put the two side-by-side with the girl carrying a small Eiffel Tower on her bike rack with her books. There s a lot going on here on many levels, this will make a great color poster one day. Creating work for World Bicycle Relief is a real honor. I consider myself very lucky to be able to share my love for cycling with an audience that has such a passion for doing good.

Passion for sharing I am a cyclist and an artist. I am very fortunate that I can share my love for bike riding with so many people through my art. My cycling club Veloist CC originated as a way to connect to other bike riders in the real world, not just the cyber world we sometimes think is real. Our Veloist group rides are friendly adventures filled with conversation and laughter. Veloist was supposed to be a merger between the words Velo and Artist, at least that s how I always took it. An artist that rides.

I love cycling caps Don t you? Most of my drawings have riders in cycling caps not helmets, that s part of the mashing of elements I mentioned earlier. I always wear a helmet when I ride but not always when I draw.

Perspective If you couldn t tell this is an indoor velodrome where track cycling races take place. Okay, so perspective isn t my thing, I don t mind, if you want perfect images buy a camera. I vote for more interesting imperfection.

Fame and glory With my pen in my hand, I am Spartacus.

Icons Ventoux and many other giants of the cycling world are favorites of mine to draw. These classic monuments connect us all with a common passion, suffering and promise of glory. I think that s why I draw them. I think that s why people like pictures of them.
