This will be the 16th anniversary of the tournament, which we have proudly organized since 1997. 16th Annual Charity Golf Classic Royal Colwood Golf Club Friday, September 20th, 2013 About VGH and this Year s Goal Victoria General Hospital (VGH) is home to the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Vancouver Island. Of the more than 3,000 babies born at Victoria General each year, nearly 600 of them are premature and require the continuous observation, monitoring, and intensive nursing this unit provides. The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is a fundraising partner with the Vancouver Island Health Authority, and raises funds annually for priority medical equipment and special projects at Vancouver Island s two largest hospitals; the Royal Jubilee and the Victoria General. This year the Charity Golf Classic is raising funds for the Victoria Hospital Foundation to purchase an Open Care Unit. Premature and critically ill babies are extremely fragile and require specialized, attentive care. In an Open Care Unit, the baby lies on a mattress with a temperature sensor on his or her abdomen. Transparent shields on all four sides minimize heat loss and a heat lamp directs heat towards the baby. The unit is open and the heat lamp is placed well above the baby, this gives plenty of room for parents to touch and comfort their child and for caregivers to maneuver equipment and perform tests and procedures. This means the baby does not need to be moved out of the unit for many of the tests and procedures, which is less disruptive. The Open Care Unit will be used at Victoria General Hospital, in pediatrics in the labour and delivery room.
