Playing the Ball 5.2.1 An indirect free shot shall be used to put the ball into play following any whistle when a face-off is not used and to start the 2 nd and 3 rd periods. 5.2.2 A goal may not be scored directly from an indirect free shot. The ball must touch another offensive player, or be possessed by a defensive player, before a goal can be scored. 5.2.3 The defensive team must give the offensive team ten feet to put the ball into play. For restarts after a goalie freezing the puck, the offensive team must clear the attacking zone. A whistle will restart play, and the attacking team can reenter the zone once the defending team has made the first pass to restart play. PENALTY: (for continued violation) Minor Delay of Game 5.2.4 The offense must wait until the referee blows the ready for play whistle before the ball is put into play. 5.2.5 Once an offensive player touches the ball, the defensive team may advance toward and play the ball. 5.2.6 After a goal, the ball will be put into play from the blue line closest to the goal of the team that was scored on. EXCEPTION: Violations or penalties by the defensive team in their zone will cause an indirect free shot from the nearest spot on the blue line. 6.1 Use of the Stick 6.1.1 Except for the goaltender making a save, the ball may only be played with the stick if the ball is below the player s standing waist level. 6.2 Use of Hand 6.2.1 The ball may be stopped and controlled by the hand, but may not be carried or held to the body. If any ball having been hand passed, is first touched by an opponent or ruled to have been an unintentional deflection or blocking of the ball, all players are eligible to play the ball. The goaltender is not allowed to throw the ball outside the zone. 6.2.2 Hand passes shall be administered at the point of stoppage unless the stoppage is in the defensive team s defensive zone; at which point the indirect free shot shall be brought to the nearest blue line. NOTE: Teams are not allowed to score as a result of gaining an advantage for any illegal act. If the ball is batted off the goaltender, a goal cannot be scored until control by the defending team or goaltender is achieved or a reasonable time elapses. 6.3 Diving For, Trapping the Ball 6.3.1 No player other than the goalkeeper exercising their privileges shall pick up, cover or trap the ball with their hands or body. For every other face-off, penalty, or violation, the offside/ on side status of the ball will not change. 6.4.7 If the ball is clearly intercepted by a member of the defending team in the attacking zone at or near the blue line and is carried or passed by their team beyond the center line, the offside shall be delayed and play permitted to continue even if a member of the attacking team has preceded the ball into the attacking zone. The referee shall drop his arm and allow play to continue if all attacking players in the attacking zone clear the attacking zone by making foot contact with the blue line. PENALTY: (for offside) Violation Indirect free shot for the defensive team at the blue line. 6.5 Goalkeeper Privileges 6.5.1 The goalie may catch, hold, or cover the ball while in the crease. 6.5.2 Once the ball is covered by the goalie, the opposing team may not play it. PENALTY: Violation Indirect free shot for the offensive team in the corner. 6.5.4 The goalie may throw the ball to the side and not beyond the blue line, or put it on the floor and pass it anywhere with his or her stick. 6.5.5 The only player on the floor with goalie rights shall be the one using the goalie stick. If the goalie is pulled for an extra attacker, no player will have goalie rights. Penalties & Other Guidelines 7. The goalkeeper: a. May, in stopping the ball, catch, trap, cover, kick or bat it with their hands, feet or stick in any direction. In clearing the ball, the goalkeeper may pick it up, carry it out of the crease, or throw in the defensive zone. (Goalkeepers may not participate in play with any part of their body or stick beyond the center red line). 11.4 The goalkeeper must be in possession of the stick at all times unless: a. he is making a play on the ball, or b. he elects not to use the stick. PENALTY: Penalty Shot. 12. Holding 12.1 There shall be no holding of an opponent, or an opponent s stick, with the hand, arm, leg, broom or otherwise, except that it shall be permissible for a player to lift the stick of the opponent with their own stick. PENALTY: Minor 14.3 Major penalties do not terminate when a goal is scored. 14.4 If the penalty time is unexpired at the end of a period, the penalty carries over into the next regular period or overtime. 14.5 During play a team shall not be reduced by time penalties so that is has fewer than three players, including the goalkeeper, on the court at any time. NOTE: When two players of the same team are serving penalties and a third player of that team is penalized, the time of the third player begins immediately. However, the offending team may not return a player to the court until only one player is serving a penalty. However, if the infraction should call for a major or misconduct penalty such penalties shall be served in addition to the awarding of a penalty shot. 17.2 A penalty shot should be conducted as follows. The ball shall be placed at center court. The player fouled (if no player has been fouled, the shot may be taken by any player of the non-offending side who is not serving a penalty when play is stopped for a penalty shot [Captain s choice]), when directed, plays the ball forward and tries to score. Once the ball is touched, the player attempting the penalty shot has 5 seconds to attempt a shot. If the player awarded the penalty shot is injured, the try may be taken by any teammate who is not serving a penalty. The ball must be kept in motion towards the opponent s goal and after taking the shot, play shall be considered complete. Should the forward motion of the ball stop, an immediate shot must be taken. A goal cannot be scored from a rebound. The goaltender may stop the ball in any legal manner. If the goaltender fails to stay in the crease until the ball crosses the blue line, or if the goaltender commits an infraction, the player is allowed to retake the penalty shot if the first attempt fails. 16.3 All players shall move behind the blue line and remain quiet until the shot has been completed.
