The Northern Michigan University Wildcats (11-15-4, 9-11-2 CCHA) will take on the Michigan State Spartans (12-14-4, 8-12-2 CCHA) at Munn Ice Arena in a pair of Central Collegiate Hockey Association games on Friday and Saturday, February 11-12. On Friday (Feb. 11) the puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Comcast. Saturday (Feb. 12) night s game is scheduled to be played at 5:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit Plus. After a winless weekend at home against Laker Superior State, NMU is on a four game losing streak. Saturday s (Feb. 5) shutout loss to the Lakers was the first time the Wildcats were shutout in conference play since losing to Miami, 4-0, on October 22, 2010. NMU was shut out this season (Nov. 27) against Bemidji State 3-0. The Wildcats are 25-32-3 all-time against the Spartans, 13-10-1 at home, 8-18-2 away, and 4-4-0 at neutral sites. In Walt Kyle s tenure the Cats are 14-12-1 against the Spartans, 4-8-1 away, 2-0-0 at neutral sites. The Wildcat s haven t played in East Lansing since October of 2008 when the Cats tied the Spartans 2-2 (SOL) on Friday (Oct. 24) and lost 2-0 on Saturday (Oct. 25). MSU was ranked fourth in the CCHA preseason polls and currently sits one spot below NMU in 10th place in the CCHA. The Michigan State Spartans have had their hands full this season. Legendary coach and former NMU head coach Rick Comley, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the season. Comley owns a 780-610-110 (.561) career record in 38 seasons and is one of just five coaches to surpass the 700-win plateau. He has recorded a 182-134-39 record in his MSU tenure. Comley ranks among the top five coaches all-time in wins and top three among active coaches and led NMU to their 1991 National Championship against Boston University (8-7). MSU is led by forward Brett Perlini with 25 goals. Dustin Galzey is second on the team with 10 goals and also is ties with two others with 10 assists on the season. Derek Grant leads the Spartans with 19 assists on the season. In net Drew Palmisano is 13th in the CCHA with a 2.94 goals-against average and ranks 10th with a.904 save percentage for the Spartans. The Cats continue to be haunted by penalties as they are the most penalized team in the CCHA with 565 minutes in 30 games (18.8 penalty minutes/game). NMU has allowed the most goals (91) in the CCHA with 47 of those goals coming on the opponent s power play. The NMU power play unit scores 17.2% of the time which is the fourth best rate in the CCHA. NMU is averaging 2.20 goals per game and just 23.3 shots on goal per game. Tyler Gron leads the Cats in goals (12), assists (14), and points (26). Justin Florek is second in points with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points. Reid Ellingson was in between the pipes last weekend. Ellingson stopped 52 shots on the weekend and has 596 saves on the season. He is currently has a.917 save percentage on the season which ranks him seventh in the CCHA. NMU will be on the road next week as they head to Bowling Green for the last regular season road trip. The Cats will be back at the Berry Events Center on Feb. 25 when they host the University of Michigan Wolverines.

NMU GAME RECAPS... Northern Michigan 0, Lake Superior 2 February 5, 2011 The Lakers handed the Wildcats their first conference shut-out loss of the season. The last time the Wildcats were shutout in conference play was back on October 22, 2010 in their 4-0 loss against Miami. The Wildcats were also shutout earlier this season at Bemidji State (3-0) on November 27, 2010. On the bright side, the Wildcats out shot the Lakers 31-26 which is the highest number of shots the Cats have managed since outshooting Bowling Green 40-16 on Nov. 13. Northern Michigan 1, Lake Superior 4 February 4, 2011 Domenic Monardo drew first blood in the game when he scored a power play goal at 3:04 of the first period. Wildcat Mike Maltese (Eastpointe, Mich.) tied the score at one when he scored an even strength goal at 19:37 of the first period, assisted by Nick Kosinski and Tyler Gron. From that point on it was all about the Lakers as they went on to score three unanswered goals and earn the victory over the Cats. Northern Michigan 1, at Western Michigan 6 January 29, 2011 Greger Hanson opened the scoring for the Cats with a power play goal, his scored his third goal of the season, after 17:44 of play in the first period. As the first period ended, so did the Wildcats scoring for the remainder of the night as the Broncos went on to score six unanswered goals in the second and third periods. All six Bronco goals were scored on Jared Coreau at even strength. Coreau ended the night with 44 saves on 50 shots. Bronco goaltender Jerry Kuhn ended the night with 17 saves on 18 shots. Northern MIchigan 2, at Western Michigan 5 January 28, 2011 Tied 2-2 entering the third period, Northern Michigan gave up three goals to No. 17 Western Michigan and went on to lose, 3-5, Friday night from Lawson Ice Arena. NMU (11-12-4, 9-8-2-0 CCHA) was coming off a weekend sweep of Ferris State but couldn t win its third consecutive Central Collegiate Hockey Association game. Western is now 13-6- 8 overall and 7-5-7-4 in the CCHA. Each team scored one goal in each of the first two periods. Ryan Watson opened the scoring for Western at 15:03 in the first period. Phil Fox scored his seventh goal of the season as he tied the game with a power-play goal from Andrew Cherniwchan and Tyler Gron at 18:53 of the first. Northern Michigan 3, Ferris State 1 January 22, 2011 The Wildcats opened up the scoring as Andrew Cherniwchan scored his sixth goal of the year at 13:03 of the first period to give the Wildcats the lead which they would hold on to for the rest of the game. Justin Florek scored the game winning goal at 16:14 of the first period with assists going to Stephan Vigier ( and Greger Hanson. In the second period the Bulldogs had 11 shots on goal in comparison to just one by the Wildcats and Bulldog Aaron Schmit 2 was able to put one of those shots past Wildcat goaltender Reid Ellingson at 4:32 of the second period to put Ferris State down by just one goal. Wildcat red-shirt freshman Wade Epp put a shot on net at 18:11 of the third period that Bulldog goaltender Pat Nagle couldn t get in front of to seal the Wildcat victory. Reid Ellingson finished the night with 32 saves on 33 shots while Pat Nagle had 15 saves on 18 shots for the Bulldogs. The Wildcat power play was not able to score on its lone opportunity however the Wildcat penalty kill unit was able to stop the Bulldogs on all five of their power play attempts. Northern Michigan 2, Ferris State 1 (OT) January 21, 2011 The two teams skated 56:14 minutes before either team was able to gain a great enough advantage to score a goal. That goal came from Bulldog Mike Fillinger ( Grand Ledge, Mich.) with assists from Jordie Johnston and Scott Czarnowczan. Wildcat forward Justin Florek (Marquette, Mich.) responded to tie the game at 18:03 after being set-up b teammates Erik Spady and Greger Hanson. In overtime Jared Brown (Gardner, Kansas) scored the game-winning goal at 1:57, assisted by Mike Maltese and Tyler Gron. Northern Michigan 1, Notre Dame 3 January 8, 2011 Notre Dame started the game with a quick goal as T.J. Tynan put one past Wildcat goalie Jared Coreau after just 2:20 of play in the first period. From there, both teams went on to go scoreless on power plays in the first period before Notre Dame forward Sean Lorenze scored at 19:31 of the first period. In the second period, Wildcat forward Andrew Cherniwchan was called for a five minute major, and after the Cats killed off 4:59 of the penalty, Irish forward Sam Calabrese finally connected on a pass from Ryan Guentzel during the power play to make the score 3-0. Following the goal the Wildcats replaced Coreau with junior goaltender Reid Ellingson. Behind the confident play of Ellingson, the Wildcats managed to put a goal on the scoreboard as Justin Florek scored his eighth goal of the season with assists from Phil Fox and Scott Macaulay. Ellingson went on to save the remaining five Notre Dame shots in the second period. Northern Michigan 1, Notre Dame 8 January 7, 2011 The Cats drew first blood as Mike Maltese scored an unassisted goal in the first period, but the Irish proved to be too much for the Cats to handle as they went on to score eight unanswered goals at the Berry Events Center. Wildcats Jared Coreau and Reid Ellingson split time between the pipes as Coreau started the game and recorded the loss after just 22:10 minutes of play. Coreau recorded 10 saves before Ellingson came in and stopped 21 in 37:50. Mike Johnson went the distance for Notre Dame and had 16 saves on 1 shots in 59:56 played.

NMU GAME RECAPS... Northern Michigan 2 at Denver 2 January 1, 2011 For the second night in a row, the Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats jumped out to a two-goal lead against the Denver Pioneers. In the end the Pioneers fought back as the two teams skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in Denver, Colo. Wildcat forward Tyler Gron opened the scoring as he put one past Pioneer goaltender Sam Brittain at 4:47 of the first period. Teammate Erik Higby beat Brittain again under three minutes later. Justin Florek and Kyle Follmer assisted on Grons goal while Phil Fox and Florek assisted on Higby s. Freshman goaltender Jared Coreau came up big for the Wildcats as he recorded 44 saves on 46 shots in the overtime tie. Northern Michigan 2 at Denver University 5 December 31, 2010 The third period proved to be too much for the Cats as their two-goal lead through two periods played slowly slipped away as the Pioneers scored five unanswered goals. Both Wildcat goals came in the second-period as junior forward Justin Florek and sophomore defenseman Kyle Follmer each tallied one. Sophomore defenseman Scott Macaulay assisted on both goals and Florek was credited with a helper on Follmer s. Nothern Michigan 6 vs. MIchigan Tech 2 December 17, 2010 The third time proved to be the charm for the Cats as they defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies, 6-2, in non-conference hockey action. The Cats had a balanced scoring attack as five players scored two points on the night; Wade Epp (2 goals), Phil Fox (1 goal, 1 assist), CJ Ludwig (2 assists), Justin Florek (2 assists), Greger Hanson (2 assists). The Cats outshot the Huskies, 26-24, which is the first time in over a month that the Cats have outshot an opponent. Northern Michigan 2 at Notre Dame 5 December 12, 2010 Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the game as Nick Larson and T.J. Tynan both snuck the puck past NMU goaltender Reid Ellingson. A Wildcat power play goal from Mike Maltese with 1:23 to play in the second period put the Cats on the score board for the first time and put them right back in the game. CJ Ludwig and Greger Hanson assisted on the goal. Wildcat Nick Kosinski then went on to score a goal from Andrew Fernandez and Maltese that tied the game 2-2. With all of the efforts that the Wildcats made, Notre Dame was just too much to handle and were able to score three unanswered goals to earn the 5-2 victory over the Cats. Wildcat goaltender Reid Ellingson ended the game with 38 saves on 43 shots while Notre Dame backstop Mike Johnson went the distance for the Irish and had 15 saves on 17 shots. Northern Michigan 3 at Notre Dame 2 December 11, 2010 The Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats may have been outshot 53-15 by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but the Cats were able to connect on three of those 15 shots to beat the Irish 3-2. Jared Coreau ended the night with 51 saves on 53 shots while Notre Dame s Mike Johnson ended with 12 saves on 15 shots. The Wildcats killed 3 all six of Notre Dames power plays while scoring on two of three power play attempts of their own. Northern Michigan 4 vs. Western Michigan 4 December 4, 2010 The Wildcats appeared to be on their way to the sweep of No. 19 Western Michigan, but the visiting Broncos had other ideas. WMU scored two goals in the final 6:16 to tie the game at 4-all, where it stayed through overtime. The Broncos (7-5-4, 3-4-3-2 CCHA) won the shootout by a 1-0 count. Northern Michigan 3 vs. Western Michigan 1 December 3, 2010 Northern Michigan scored goals on its first three shots and cruised to a 3-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the Broncos. Three different players scored goals and Reid Ellingson made 27 saves in net to help the Wildcats improve to 7-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the CCHA. Northern Michigan 0 at Bemidji State 3 November 27, 2010 Bemidji State managed to fire 37 shots on Wildcat goaltender Reid Ellingson for the second consecutive night as he had 37 saves on 37 shots on Friday (Nov. 26). The Cats had just 17 shots on net themselves. Of those 17 Wildcat shots, ten came in the first period leaving just seven in the second and third period, combined. Dan Bakala saved all 17 Wildcat shots in-between the pipes for the Beavers to earn the shutout. Northern Michigan 4 at Bemidji State 0 November 26, 2010 The Cats blanked the Beavers, 4-0, with no single Wildcat scoring more than one point. Wildcat Reid Ellingson recorded 37 saves during the shutout for the Cats in their first ever win over Bemidji State. Northern Michigan 2 at Alaska 1 November 20, 2010 The tie between the two teams was finally settled after a second night of hockey between two very evenly matched teams. The Cats drew first blood as Andrew Cherniwchan scored midway through the third period with Justin Florek adding what would be the game winner on an empty-net goal at 19:34. Alaska fought back and put their own tally on the board with just one second left in the third period. Northern Michigan 1 at Alaska 1 (OT) November 19 The Cats and Nanooks skated to a 1-1 tie which is nothing new as an outcome when these two teams play. The teams tied and had shoot-outs decide three of the four games they played in 2009-10. In the November 19 tie the Cats came back from a one goal deficit to hold on for the tie as Tyler Gron scored at 16:11 of the third period.

NMU GAME RECAPS... Northern Michigan 5 vs. Bowling Green 1 November 13 After a disappointing loss on Friday (Nov. 12) the Cats responded by dominating the Falcons in a 5-1 victory. The home team recorded two goals in the second period before Justin Florek tallied a power-play goal at 12:32 for a 2-1 game in the second period. October 22, 2010 The RedHawks blanked the Cats in the opening CCHA game for both squads. Miami picked up a goal in each of the first two periods and added two in the final frame. Northern Michigan 4 at Michigan Tech 4 (OT) October 12, 2010 Meeting for the second time in a span of four days the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period (9:43 and 12:40). Chad Pietila scored his first goal of the season at 16:42 to cut the lead in half. NMU scored three goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Scoring for the Cats were Brian Nugent (2:29), Justin Florek on the power play (8:43) and Tyler Gron (18:49). MTU added two goals in the final frame to tie the game at four-all. 2010-2011 Perani Cup... The 2010-11 season marks the 10th year of the Perani Cup Three Stars, which is awarded following the conclusion of each CCHA regular-season game. Players from each school earn points throughout the season each time they are named a star of the game (5 points for 1st star, 3 points for 2nd star and 1 point for 3rd star). At the end of the season, the CCHA will crown a Perani Cup champion as well as honor individual winners from each school. Walt Kyle is in his ninth season in Marquette at Northern Michigan University as he was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, 2002. Entering into the 2010-11 season he was 164-139-35 at the helm of the Wildcats. Kyle picked up his first collegiate win behind the Wildcat bench with a 4-1 win at Michigan Tech on the night of Oct. 5, 2002. He has led the Cats to Joe Louis Arena and the CCHA Championships in seven of his eight seasons. During the 2009-10 season he led the 'Cats to the CCHA Championship game and the NCAA Tournament which was the first time since 1999 for both. Kyle was the U.S. National Junior Team Coach at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Vancouver, B.C. He led the U.S. to a fourthplace finish. 6 For two years (2000-02) Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club, from 1998-00. Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1996-98) under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the AHL s Baltimore Bandits (1995-96), the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls (1994-95) and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds (1992-94). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals, with 59 assists for 90 points. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to an assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until 1992. Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA I national title. He graduated from NMU in 1981 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. Kyle attended graduate school at Northern where he took a graduate level curriculum in exercise physiology. An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo for Team USA, which finished fourth at the 2001 World Championships in Germany, and under Wilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad, under the older format, and one of only three U.S. teams to ever medal at the World Championships. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in 1991. Kyle, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Quinn and Erin; and two sons, Evan and Walt.
