ITINERARY Located on Sweden's beautiful west coast, The Gothia Cup is an international soccer tournament that since its beginning in 1975 has grown to over 1,500 teams representing more than 70 countries. The opening ceremony at Ullevi Stadium attracts 50,000 spectators and international soccer participants, while 1,100 volunteers guarantee that this will remain the international soccer tournament of all international soccer tournaments! First-class international soccer competition on first-class soccer fields is only part of this great festive week. DAY 2 Saturday, 14 July 2018 Our 24-hour Tour Director will meet us at the airport and remain with us until our final airport departure. Our private coach and driver will transfer us to our Copenhagen area hotel. We will have use of our coach for all transfers, touring and soccer content as required throughout. Copenhagen is a place of contrasts; this cobblestone city has been Denmak's capital for over 1000 years and is home to the world's oldest monarchy. Yet modern Copenhagen is a surprisingly cosmopolitan city of cutting-edge fashion and design and striking modern architecture. For the next evening, we will enjoy the convenience of our centrally-located Copenhagen hotel, where daily breakfast and dinner will be included. We begin with a welcome meeting and orientation. Afterwards, enjoy free time to explore the area around the hotel. NYHAVN BOAT TOUR Take a Boat Tour around the harbor and through the idyllic canals where a guide will tell us about Copenhagen's beautiful churches, castles, old listed houses, new buildings and all other sights of interest. The tour departs from Nyhavn and passes some of Copenhagens best sights and attractions including the Little Mermaid statue, a Copenhagen symbol. DAY 3 Sunday, 15 July 2018 CITY TOUR We will take a City Tour of Copenhagen by bus and foot. Highlights will include: Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square) to view the bronze statue of Hans Christian Andersen; Lavendelstræde; Slutterigade; Nytorv; Strøget, a stroller's and a shopper's delight; Helligåndskirken (Church of the Holy Ghost); Kongens Nytorv, which surrounds Copenhagen's largest square, with an equestrian statue of Christian IV in the center; Nikolaj Kirke; Christiansborg Palace; the Thorvaldsens Museum; Gammel Strand; Snaregade; Magstræde; and Tivoli Gardens. You will have some free time to explore the area. This afternoon we will transfer to the Gothenburg area. 1
DAY 3 Sunday, 15 July 2018 Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden. Situated by the Kattegat, on the west coast of Sweden, the city grew in prominence after 1731 when the Swedish East India Company was founded, and the city flourished due to its foreign trade with highly profitable commercial expeditions to China. For the next six evenings we will enjoy the convenience of our centrally-located Gothenburg hotel, where daily breakfast and dinner will be included. We begin with a welcome meeting and orientation. Afterwards, enjoy free time to explore the area around the hotel. DAY 4 Monday, 16 July 2018 Today we will transfer to the Gothia Cup. GOTHIA CUP The Gothia Heden Center is the heart of the Gothia Cup. Here we will find the Central Information building, the tournament's headquarters during the week. Heden Center in the heart of Göteborg is centrally located within walking distance from Nya Ullevi (opening ceremony arena) and the main boulevard Avenyn. Heden is a storied place in the Swedish football. It was namely here that the first football game in Swedish territory was played. The year was 1892 and the match was between Örgryte IS and IS lyckans Soldater. In the Gothia Heden Center there will be a large event and exhibition area where our partners arrange fun activities and contests. You will also find souvenirs, food court, and Taste the World here! FIRST ROUND MATCHES We will play a first round Match against a team. The team will meet and compete against athletes of similar ages and skill levels, and have the opportunity to make friends for life. The match is central during the Gothia Cup. It is the reason why you are here. In total 4,000 matches are being played during the week. Almost 100 fields are required and all regular matches are being played on natural grass or artificial turf. The statistics show that about half of the matches in the boys' categories are being played between teams from different countries. For the girls the corresponding number is approximately 25%. The 500 referees that are engaged during the Gothia Cup week are indispensable for the tournament and they are recruited from all over Sweden. GOTHIA CUP OPENING CEREMONY Tonight we will attend the Gothia Opening Ceremony, which celebrates harmony and fellowship. Similar to an Olympic ceremony the atmosphere surrounding the opening of the Gothia Cup is electric, enough to make you shiver with excitement.
