Lawrence North Student-Athletes of the Week MIC Champs Ben McAteer (Swimming) & Robert Samuels (Wrestling), Priscilla Goodwine (Cheer), and Logan Carrender (Wrestling) Seniors Ben McAteer and Robert Samuels recently won MIC championships in their respective sports. McAteer won the 100-yard backstroke for the swim team, while Samuels won the 289-pound weight class in wrestling. Senior Priscilla Goodwine carries a 4.1 GPA and is the student-athlete of character for the cheer squad. Freshman Logan Carrender, in the first varsity action of his career and his team behind by 6, pinned his LC opponent with only 22 seconds left to tie the match and keep the Wildcats alive.
Boys Basketball: The #15 Wildcats (10-4, 2-1 MIC) took down the top ranked North Central Panthers (14-2, 2-1 MIC) on Friday night, 56-53, in front of a packed crowd in the Keefer Gym! Dexter Shouse had 18 points and Kevin Easley scored 16, including a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the game to put the Wildcats ahead for good. The LN defense suffocated North Central as the Panthers couldn t get a shot off at the end of the game. It was an outstanding atmosphere of good old fashioned Indiana high school basketball! In addition, students and players from both Lawrence North and North Central participated in the Moment of Intentional Community, a movement started by students of the MIC schools to promote unity between students and communities of the MIC conference. Students and players from all 8 MIC schools (Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, North Central, Pike, & Warren Central) wore orange shirts on Friday night as a show of unity and togetherness. A student group from Brazil also visited LN on Friday night, which turned out to be an outstanding experience for this group as well as our own students. And finally, a big shout out to the LN Pep Band! This group definitely brought it on Friday night! What a night! Next up for the Wildcats is a game against the Trojans of Center Grove (9-5, 1-2 MIC) on Friday night and then on the road again against Fishers (6-7) on Saturday night. Girls Basketball: The #10 Wildcats (11-7, 3-3 MIC) had a tough week, losing at #6 Hamilton Southeastern (17-4) and at #1 North Central (22-0), 73-53. The girls will look to get back on track against Tindley on Tuesday before finishing the regular season against Center Grove on Friday night. Both games this week are at home, with JV starting at 6:00pm with varsity to follow. The team will start sectional play on Friday, February 3 rd at Warren Central against the winner of WC and NC. Cheerleading: The Wildcat cheerleaders did a fantastic job getting the crowd fired up at the game Friday night! Great job, girls! Photos courtesy of Varsity Views.
Swimming & Diving: Both teams recently took 4 th place at the MIC championships. Senior Ben McAteer was the MIC champion in the 100-yard backstroke! The Wildcat also earned wins over Cathedral, Warren Central, and Lawrence Central. The girls team finished the dual meet season with an 8-4 record and are currently entering the taper phase of training, preparing for the sectional championships on February 2 nd and 4 th. The boys team is currently 9-2 this season, with a meet against North Central coming up next week on January 31 st. The JV squads will host the 2 nd annual JV Winter Classic this Saturday in the LN Natatorium. Photos courtesy of Mr. Penrose.
Wrestling: The Wildcat wrestlers had a disappointing MIC championship, finishing 7 th. However, senior Robert Samuels took home the MIC title at 289 pounds. Things got much better for LN, as only a few days later they upset rival Lawrence Central on senior night at home, 35-35, winning on criteria (most pins). This was a fantastic night for LN wrestling! The team came back time and again to stay in the match. Freshman Logan Carrender got a very timely and critical win at 106 pounds, pinning his opponent with only 22 seconds left to keep the Wildcats alive. The 1992 State Champions were also honored, and their presence certainly played a critical role in the Wildcats big win over the Bears! The team will be competing in the IHSAA sectional championships this Saturday at Lawrence Central. Good luck, men!
Remember Jordan Hankins, Class of 2015 This has been an especially trying time over the last few weeks for the Wildcat family. We want to offer a special thanks to the wonderful people at the Eastern Star Church for such a wonderful service last week for Jordan Hankins. Our thought and prayers continue to go out to the family, friends, coaches, and teammates of Jordan.
