Warrior Wave 1. HERstory is Made!!! Congratulations to our Girls Swimming & Diving Team on capturing their 4 th CONSECUTIVE CHL league championship! This is the first time in history that any CHL girls swimming team has achieved this feat. It is also the first time, as far as I can find, that any Mariemont team, regardless of sport or gender, has captured a league title 4 years in a row!!! This means that Emma Adams, Lily Grantham, Fiona Kane and Meghan Leonard are the first (but hopefully not the last) athletes to win every league title for their sport! Our teams captured gold in 6 individual races and 3 relays. Leading the gold rush with 4 was the Girls CHL Swimmer of the Year Cora Dupre (200 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay). Close behind with 3 were Brooke Woellert (200 I.M. *she has won this event all 3 years, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay) and Kate Overbey (100 Breast, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay). Claiming 2 golds were Ian Mikesell (200 I.M., 100 Breast), Lainey Newman (200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay) and Erin Kelly (200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay). Snagging 1 gold were Catherine Geary and Elizabeth Bonnell in the 400 Free Relay. We had soooooooooooo many outstanding performances! Hopefully you were able to witness the incredible time drops from our ladies and very special Venezuelan teammate who shaved, tapered and suited up for their final meet of the season. It was quite special to see the support our team gave Sebastian Delgado during his 100 Fly where he broke the 1 minute barrier for the first time!!! Congratulations to Emma Adams, Lily Grantham, Meghan Leonard, Sophie Borgerding, Cameron Cumming, Lily Toman, Molly Sharp and Riley Dunne on their amazing time drops! A huge THANK YOU to all of the parents and Warrior Nation for coming out to pack the pool and support our team the natatorium was rockin! The see of yellow shirts was quite impressive! You could feel the energy in the air with all of the great racing by all of the
swimmers from each of the CHL teams. Didn t the natatorium look awesome with all of our posters adorning the walls? Thank you to all of the parents who worked the meet and provided food for the hospitality room. We put on a great show!!! 2. Shave, Taper and Paper In the sport of swimming you might hear the words shave and taper. We work hard all season, making ourselves tired during practice while still trying to perform at a high level. Then once taper hits, we back off of some dryland, not do as much yardage, do a lot of racing and fast swimming with more rest, fine tune our strokes, turns and starts. Swimmers tend to be the happiest when Taper Time hits! During taper, swimmers should be: getting lots of rest, eating healthy foods, and limiting physical exertion to their swimming training only. Because of individual needs and goals some teammates are tapering at different times over the next few weeks. Some swimmers will be tapering for Sectionals because they will be looking to swim their fastest at Mason and perhaps qualify for Districts the following weekend. Some swimmers are tapering for Districts because they will be trying to punch their ticket to the State Championships. And finally, some swimmers will be tapering for State because they are looking to keep Mariemont at the TOP of Ohio swimming!!! Swimmers shave their entire body when they are trying to go their fastest. It s not just the hair (as many people outside of the sport believe) but the layer of skin that we are shaving off. When a swimmers shaves (everywhere his/her suit does not cover) he/she is removing the top layer of skin. This creates a sensation like no other when a swimmer enters the water for their events. You feel as if you are not even touching the water and can slip right through it with the fastest speed you ve ever created! Sometimes teammates have shaving parties to help each other shave their legs, arms, backs and chests. The captains may organize these if they would like. If it s at your house, good luck keeping your drains from clogging (especially the boys legs). Take it slow, use good shaving cream and razors, and do not apply lotion afterwards. Be prepared to not feel your clothes or sheets for a few days afterwards!
We use to use the word paper a long time ago in swimming because the suit you wore at the end of the season was paper thin and as skimpy as possible! Now we call the suits speed suits. Swimmers wear speed suits to compress their bodies into a streamline position and tend to be a smaller size then normally worn. They are made with water resistant material that allows swimmers to have less drag than their regular suits. I have a collection of speed suits that I have personally purchased over the years. You can tell by the prices below that they are not cheap. I will allow swimmers to wear them at our Championship meets. Swimmers show their appreciation for this generous act by taking great care of the suit, rinsing it in cold water and returning it in the bag it was given to them with it not being bunched up in a ball. If a swimmer would like to purchase a new speed suit, please see the information below. 3. K-T Overbey will be placing the needed worker spots on our volunteer site. Boy swimmers are STRONGLY encouraged to stay after their meet and be the timers this way you are on deck and can be on hand to witness the great Mariemont swims! There are other spots to be filled as well. Our program gets $$$ for providing the workers that we use to provide items for our team. Please help if you plan on being in attendance! Unfortunately, Miss Jordan will be out of town this weekend with her commitment to her music program (I think she s going to be in the Bahamas). Thank you to Mrs. Dupre for volunteering to ride the big yellow school bus with the girls. If you would like to join her (because you miss field trips on big yellow busses) just let Kevin know. 5. Speed Suits! If you are interested in purchasing a speed suit for the Championship season you might want to consider purchasing one from Swimville USA. That is the swim shop that provided our team suits this season. Because of that, they are offering Mariemont High School swimmers special discount pricing! These are wonderful discounts!!! Please remember that when representing Mariemont we only wear either black or blue speed suits. I know there are other fancy, more colorful choices out there, but it is important to me that we look like a team as best we can. Here is a chart of various suits and pricing. In my opinion, the best suits have been the LZR
Elites. The LZR X are good but sometimes are difficult to fit and tend to be the most expensive. Those wearing LZR Pros don t seem to have the significant time drops as the LZR Elites. If you have any questions please take a moment and contact Coach Kevin.
