The Village at Gordon House Thursday, May 3, 2018 Birdwood Golf Course After his father Whitey Howard died of Alzheimer s disease 23 years ago, Bill Howard, a Charlottesville commercial real estate agent, contacted the Alzheimer s Association. In appreciation for the information and support the Association provided for the Howard family, Bill offered to organize a fundraiser. As a passionate golfer, Bill naturally organized a golf tournament. Nineteen years later, the annual Bill Howard Golf Tournament and accompanying events, have raised more than $1.1 million for the Central and Western Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association helping to provide care and support for hundreds of individuals challenged with Alzheimer s disease, their families and caregivers.

2017 ALZHEIMER S DISEASE FACTS AND FIGURES MORE THAN IN 2016 15 MILLION AMERICANS provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer s or other dementias these caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 BILLION HOURS of care valued at over $230 BILLION In 2017, Alzheimer s and other dementias will cost the nation $259 billion By 2050, these costs could rise as high as $1.1 TRILLION 35 % of caregivers for people with Alzheimer s or another dementia report that their health has gotten worse due to care responsibilities, compared to 19 % of caregivers for older people without dementia ALZHEIMER S DISEASE IS THE 6TH LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES MORE THAN 5 MILLION AMERICANS ARE LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER S BY 2050, THIS NUMBER COULD RISE AS HIGH AS 16 MILLION EVERY 66 SECONDS someone in the United States develops the disease 1 IN 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer s or another dementia IT KILLS MORE THAN breast cancer and prostate cancer COMBINED Since 2000, deaths from heart disease have decreased by 14% while deaths from Alzheimer s disease have increased by 89%

About us Alzheimer s Association of Central & Western Virginia Who We Are The Alzheimer s Association of Central & Western Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our Chapter has been a member of the national Alzheimer s Association since 1983. One of four chapters serving Virginia, our Chapter includes 51 counties and cities in central and western Virginia including Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Danville, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Staunton, and Waynesboro. We currently have offices in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Danville, Roanoke, OUR PRIORITIES Care and Support Research Advocacy The Alzheimer s Association is the LEADING voluntary health organization in Alzheimer s research, care and support in the world. Our MISSION is to eliminate Alzheimer s disease through the advancement of research, provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our VISION is a world without Alzheimer s. Who We Serve We provide programs and services for people with Alzheimer s disease and other types of dementia, their family members and friends, professional caregivers and memory care facilities, primary care physicians and other health care providers, and emergency first responders.

Our Programs and Services Programs & Services We Provide Care Consultations: Chapter staff members are available by appointment to meet face to face or by telephone with individuals challenged by Alzheimer s disease or other types of dementia and their family members to create a plan of care. Caregiver Support Groups: Our Chapter facilitates 40 support groups that meet monthly throughout our service area. Additionally, online support groups are available through alzconnected.org. Early Stage Programs: Our Chapter provides support groups and social programs for persons in the early stages of Alzheimer s or related disorders including Memory Cafes and Arts Fusion programs. Education & Training: During the year, Alzheimer s Association staff and trained volunteers offer a variety of workshops, trainings, and conferences for personal and professional caregivers and the general public, in communities throughout our service area. 24/7 Helpline and Alzheimer s Association Website: Professional staff provide information and referrals are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the Alzheimer s Association Helpline (800-272-3900). The Alzheimer s Association Website (alz.org) also provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on Alzheimer s disease, current research and clinical trials, as well as information and resources for personal and professional caregiving, living arrangements, and legal and financial planning. Alzheimer s Workplace Alliance: Our Chapter s Development Team works with employers throughout central and western Virginia to promote healthy brain activities, to increase awareness of the symptoms of Alzheimer s disease to help with earlier diagnosis, as well as provide training and resources for employees who are caring for a family member or friend with Alzheimer s or dementia. Safety Programs: MedicAlert + Alzheimer s Association Safe Return is a national program that assists in the safe and timely return of individuals who wander or become lost. Research: A portion of every dollar contributed to our Chapter helps fund research at the national level. The Alzheimer s Association has been involved in every major advancement in Alzheimer s research since the 1980 s and is a leader in the global fight for a world without Alzheimer s. We are commited to accelerating progress of new treatments, preventions and ultimately, a cure. Advocacy: Chapter staff and volunteers work to advance the Association s mission through improved local, state, and federal Alzheimer s funding and policies.

Where the Money Goes Where Our Funding Comes From The majority of our Chapter s annual funding comes from donations received through our The Longest Day fundraiser in June, fall Walk to End Alzheimer s events, and our Year-End Mailing. About 13% of our annual revenue comes from grants from public and private funders. An additional 10% is generated by special events like the Bill Howard Golf Tournament & Gala that raises more than $80,000 each year. Memorial and tribute gifts comprise 5% of our annual income. How Our Funding is Allocated Nearly half of our Chapter s annual revenue is used for programs, services, and public awareness. About 35% of our financial resources are dedicated to research and advocacy. Administrative and fundraising costs total 22%.
