ASPARAGUS FACTS FROM BRIAN ROSSO, RD Asparagus is a popular menu item at American House. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this nutritious vegetable! Asparagus is believed to have originated in Greece 2500 years ago. It comes in 3 colors: white (grown underground to avoid sunlight, and very popular in Northwest Europe), green, and purple. It s part of the lily family. It takes 3 years to harvest asparagus for the first time from beginning as a seed. In terms of health, Asparagus acts as a diuretic and a laxative. Michigan ranks 3rd in producing asparagus nationally. Our state produces 25 million pounds of asparagus annually (or a market value of $15 million) on 11,000 acres. Prime growing season is early May to late June. It s 93% water and 5 oz. provides only 20 calories. It is fat-free, has 3 grams of fiber, and is a great source folic acid, potassium, protein, and Vitamins A and C. Visit an American House today and enjoy some asparagus.

Don t take today for granted. If you re now on the other side is the grass really greener? God s answers are: YES. NO. Wait a minute. Hugs are better than drugs for stress and pain. It s nice to be important, but it s important to be nice. Incompetence and overconfidence usually exist in the same person. BEAT THE HEAT! Seniors are especially susceptible to heatrelated illnesses, and there are precautions that we can take to minimize our chance of succumbing to heat stress. Helpful tips: Wear light clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen; keep hydrated; avoid alcoholic beverages; eat small meals; be aware of symptoms of heat-related illnesses; and seek treatment promptly.
