WELCOME TO Y YOUTH SPORTS Thank you for joining us this season as we teach your athletes the value of team work, develop skills, and learn good sportsmanship! The purpose of this manual is to introduce families to the YMCA Sports Program including the philosophy, guidelines, policies and rules of play for YMCA basketball. GENERAL INFORMATION AGE GROUPS Age cut off for winter sports is January 1 Micro (3, 4 & 5, 6 yr. olds) (Micro teams are all co-ed) 8 & Under (7 & 8 yr. olds) (boys and girls leagues) 10 & Under (9 & 10 yr. olds) (boys & girls leagues) 12 & Under (11 & 12 yr. olds) (boys & girls leagues) 14 & Under (13 & 14 yr. olds) (boys & girls) 18 & Under (15 18 yr. olds) (boys only) *Separate boys and girls divisions offered when registration permit *Co-Ed teams will play in the boys division IMPORTANT DATES Practice begins: Games begin: Tournament: Participants can expect their team roster and game schedules by [INSERT DATE] ATTENDANCE To ensure a great expericience for all participants, please make reasonable efforts to be at each practice and game as scheduled. Parents should remain at the facility during all youth sports practices and games. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE & REFUNDS We strive to ensure that the YMCA and our programs are accessible and available for all. Financial assistance is available on a case by case basis. For more information, please visit the Welcome Center of your home YMCA. We hope you and your athletes enjoy the season with us. If for some reason, you cannot complete a season or are unsatisfied for any reason, please contact your YMCA Sports Director. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia provides refunds for programs on a case by case basis.

GENERAL INFORMATION FRIENDLY PLAY RULES The YMCA of Coastal GA is dedicated to a friendly and fun environment for all participants. Because skill levels at the YMCA can range from beginner to advanced we have implemented the following rules to keep the competition fun for all. As stated above there will be no full court press if a team is leading by a significant margin. 8 & U - no press at all 10 &U no press at all 12 &U no press after 10pt lead 14 / 18 & U- no press after 20 points Score will not be displayed on the scoreboard if a team is leading by a significant margin. 8&U 20pt lead 10&U 20pt lead All others - 30 point lead TOURNAMENTS The local post-season tournament will be played within the YMCA of Coastal GA league teams. The YMCA State All-Star Tournament will be hosted by the Atlanta YMCA. All-star teams are selected through a try-out format. Teams are chosen 3-4 weeks prior to the tournament. More information about the tournament will be available for Volunteer Coaches, prior to theend of the season. COMMUNICATIONS & CANCELLATIONS During the course of the season, parents, players and coaches will receive an informational sport newsletter or e-mail to keep everyone informed of key dates and times of upcoming events. Please regularly check the YMCA of Coastal GA s website and Facebook pages for late breaking information. If for some reason, practice or games are cancelled, you will be notified via phone. END OF SEASON CELEBRATION At the conclusion of the season, the YMCA will provide awards for each player with team parents typically conducting an end of the season party. VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECKS As part of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia s policy for conducting youth programs, all volunteers and staff that work with youth must undergo a background check. This is consistent with local YMCA Risk Management policy.

GUIDELINES The National Federation of High Schools Basketball rulebook shall govern basketball at all levels of play. HOWEVER, The YMCA Youth Basketball League has implemented some special rules at all levels of play. Y rules will be in effect as written in this manual. Unless stated in this manual all participants, spectators, staff, volunteers and referees will follow the NFHSB rulebook. AGE GUIDELINES The date for determining age division is January 1. The age of the child on this date will determine what age group he/she will play. -A child may move up an age group but cannot move down in an age group. -A child is eligible to play for only one team. -Athletes who dresses are plays for a High School Varsity Team are prohibited from playing in this league. MANDATORY PLAY RULE AND ROSTER LIMITS Each player is required to play half of the game and coaches will use discretion in determining when a child will play. All volunteer coaches who violate this rule are subject to suspension. Roster Limits: Micro Basketball-8 players All other Leagues-10 players Number of players to start a game: Micro Basketball -3 players All other leagues -May start and complete a game with 4 players EQUIPMENT All players shall be dressed in uniform: Numbered jersey Shorts with NO pockets (recommended) Micro jerseys only The YMCA is responsible for game balls and for assuring that uniform jerseys are of a different color, or providing contrasting jerseys when in conflict. All players must wear soft-soled basketball or tennis shoes. No watches, rings, jewelry, or other adornments of any kind. Religious or Med-Alert tags shall be taped to the body. PARTICIPANT CODE OF CONDUCT The YMCA asks and expects EVERYONE S cooperation in abiding by the rules and guidelines set forth in this manual. *All volunteer coaches, fans, parents, family, friends and players are asked to remember the commitment made to good sportsmanship as stated: I WILL BE POSITIVE I will express support and encouragement for my child and teammates ---nice pass, good job, atta girl/boy ect. I WILL RESPECT THE COACH I will support the coach and help out when asked. I understand that any coaching or instructions from the parent s side is not allowed. I will let the coach do the coaching without my interference. I WILL RESPECT THE REFEREE I will give professional respect before, during, and after the game to the referee. I will refrain from criticizing referees. I will accept official decisions without anger no matter how unfair they may seem. I understand that mistakes can be made referees are only human. I will not yell, raise my voice or act in an agitated or hostile manner in regards to an official decision. I WILL RESPECT YMCA EMLOYEES I understand that basketball has rules and guidelines and all decisions are based on those rules and guidelines. YMCA staff are on duty to ensure safety, and sportsmanship is being demonstrated by all involved. I will not yell, raise my voice or act in an agitated or hostile manner towards any Y staff. I WILL BE A GOOD SPORT By my example I will teach my child good sportsmanship toward the opposing team, parents and fans and Y Staff. I will also teach them by my example respect for the property owned by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and property leased by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. I WILL RECOGNIZE THE VALUE AND IMPORTANCE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS Coaches, referees and volunteers give of their time and resources to provide instruction, guidance and a safe and fun environment for my child for my child. I WILL ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES IF I BEHAVE IMPROPERLY These consequences may include my being told by the referee to leave the spectator s area or YMCA; my being suspended from attending games; or the opportunity to coach for the YMCA in the future.

MICRO BASKETBALL 4 on 4 full court play No interrupt dribble rule No stealing ball at any time Players may dribble with two hands if needed 4 45 minute practices and 4 games for each team RULES OF PLAY 8 & UNDER- INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE Games start with alternate possessions and continue throughout the contest. This is determined by the coin flip During the first 4 games, traveling and double dribbling will be called; however, it will not result in loss of possession During the last 4 games, traveling and double dribble will be called and will result in loss of possession No fast breaks on rebounds Fast breaks only on turn-over No full court press, Defense may pick-up play after the ball crosses the three-point line or the defenses hash mark if a 3 point line is not present. A defensive player may not reach in to steal a ball as the offensive player dribbles or pivots with possession. The defense may steal a pass or block a shot only. No lane violation rule (3 seconds). Individual fouls are not kept; No one fouls out. Team fouls are recorded; one and one foul shots on seventh team foul. Foul line will be set at ten feet; tolerant enforcement of foul line violations. Three time outs per game. Three-point line will be in effect where available. Games may end in a tie; NO OVERTIME PERIOD 10 & UNDER - SEMI-COMPETITIVE / INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE Three time outs per game. No full court press Player can be picked at half court Enforcement of foul line violations Leniency will be given to shooter 3 second lane violation Running Clock Games tied at end of regulation play will have a 3-minute overtime period until there is a winner, with one additional time out per team

AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE TECHNICAL FOULS Players/Coaches receiving two technical fouls in a game will be suspended for the next immediate game. If a volunteer coach receives a technical foul they must sit down and coach from the bench. Any additional technical fouls received during any part of the season may result in being expelled from the league on a case by case basis. Any actions determined to be intent on causing injury or harm will result in immediate dismissal from league FOUL SHOTS During the shooting of foul shots, the clock will stop as follows: 2 Shot Fouls: -stops with foul call Bonus Fouls: -stops with foul call
