ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS Director of Strategic Communications: Joey Daniels Email: danielsj@uwgb.edu Office: 920.465.2498 Cell: 920.288.7723 LEADING OFF Through its first five games under first-year head coach Linc Darner, Green Bay (2-3) is sixth in the NCAA in steals per game (11.60), behind Chicago State, Cincinnati, Incarnate Word, West Virginia and VCU. Additionally, the Phoenix has forced opponents into an average of 17.8 turnovers per contest, and its turnover ratio of +6.8 is just outside the top-10 (11th) in the nation as of Nov. 25. A season ago, Darner s Florida Southern team finished second in Division II in both turnover margin (+7.2) and total steals. Appearing in his 103rd consecutive start, senior Jordan Fouse established a new career high with 16 rebounds in Tuesday s win over Akron, eclipsing his previous high-water mark of 15, done twice, previously on Jan. 5 last season vs. Wright State. Nine of his 16 boards were offensive, which was nearly half of Green Bay s total in the game (20). As the Phoenix s second leading-scorer (nine points), Fouse also fell one-point shy of his 10th career double-double. GREEN BAY (2-3) at EASTERN ILLINOIS (0-3) November 28, 2015 7:00 PM CT Lantz Arena Charleston, Ill. Game No. 6 Green Bay head coach Linc Darner (294 career wins) is closing in on his 300th victory in his 14th season. He has posted a.710 career winning percentage (294-120), including six seasons with 25+ wins and a 36-1 record and DII National Championship last season. PROJECTED STARTERS (2015-16 Stats) No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. PPG RPG MPG Notes Phoenix Linc Darner recorded his first collegiate Division I win on Sunday afternoon over Minnesota-Duluth (W, 94-74). Although he started 0-3, history plays positively. Of the six other head coaches in program history, only one also began his first season 0-3: Dick Bennett. In fact, Bennett began the 1985-86 season 0-8 until his first career win, before he went on to amass 316 career DI victories. The Phoenix s loss to the ETSU Bucs on Nov. 17 in Johnson City, Tenn., marked the first time Green Bay have lost back-to-back games in the regular season since Jan. 3-5, 2013, at Wright State and Detroit, respectively. After being held to just two fast-break points in its season-opening loss at Stanford, Green Bay has outscored its opponents 56-33 on the break over the past four games. The Phoenix has capitalized better on second-chance opportunities as well, outscoring opponents 79-45 in those situations over that same span. Jordan Fouse is currently averaging a doubledouble (10.0 PPG and 10.2 RPG) and also leads the Horizon League in rebounding. Love has knocked down 13 threepointers this season, which nearly equals half the total of the rest of the team combined (29). Love earned his second career Horizon League Player of the Week award on 11/16 after notching a career-high 32 points in the season-opener at Stanford, and is currently second in the Horizon League in points per game behind Oakland s Khalil Felder (25.7). TERRIFIC TEVIN Junior guard Tevin Findlay was extremely efficient on Sunday afternoon, posting a career-high 15 points in a season-high 17 minutes played against Minnesota-Duluth. Findlay went 4-for-5 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, as one of just four Phoenix players to finish in double figures. As of the morning of 11/27, Findlay would lead the NCAA in three-point field goal percentage, but six attempts doesn t qualify him nationally. Findlay added another six points off the bench in quality minutes against Akron. FRESH START Freshman guard Anthony Brown made his first career start in Sunday s game against UMD in place of forward Turner Botz, and again received the nod in Tuesday s win over Akron. Brown ended Sunday with six points and two assists in 22 minutes and is the first freshman to start a game for Green Bay since Jordan Fouse did so in all 34 games in 2012-13. The Clermont, Fla., native was named the Class 6A Player of the Year by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches last season after averaging team highs in points (20.9), rebounds (7.0) and assists (5.3). LOWE-POST PRESENCE After starting 13 games a year ago, junior forward Kenneth Lowe made his presence known in his second of 2015-16 on 11/17 against East Tennessee State. In what was arguably the best game of his collegiate career, the 6-foot-8 forward posted a career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, also career bests, to go along with nine rebounds in just 24 minutes, falling one rebound shy of his first career-double-double. The junior is shooting 52.9 percent (19-of-36) from the floor through five games and is fourth in scoring with 9.0 PPG. COOPER COUNT The JUCO transfer from Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill., has provided the Phoenix with another reliable offensive option in his first five career NCAA games, posting 12.4 points per game along with adding 5.0 rebounds per game. The Gary, Ind., native has started each of the first five games for Darner and the Phoenix, and is currently second on the team in scoring behind the aforementioned Carrington Love. REPLACING THE ROTATION Green Bay lost over 63 percent of its scoring from 2014-15 as it is without Keifer Sykes (18.6 ppg), Greg Mays (12.0 ppg), Alfonzo McKinnie (8.0 ppg) and Daeshon Francis (4.5 ppg). It has giving ample opportunity to a number of returning players, four of which averaged less than 10 minutes per game last season: Turner Botz (8.1), Khalil Small (6.7), Tevin Findlay (4.3) and Kerem Kanter (4.3). The Phoenix rank fifth in the NCAA in steals per game, averaging 11.6 per game as a team through five games. SCORING IN BUNCHES Despite its 2-3 start to the season, Green Bay hasn t had many issues scoring thus far in 2015-16. Green Bay s 350 points is the most it s scored through its first four games since 1971-72, when it averaged 89.3 PPG through four games in Division II under head coach Dave Buss. Green Bay s 90 points scored in its 11/17 loss to ETSU was the most they ve put up in a losing-effort since Jan. 11, 1972, against Winona State (L, 92-104), when it was still a Division II institution. 20-20 VISION A pair of Phoenix players recorded 20-point games on 11/17 against East Tennessee State, as Kenneth Lowe and Carrington Love had 23 and 22, respectively. It marks the first time two Green Bay players have eclipsed the 20-point plateau since Feb. 28 last season (Keifer Sykes/Greg Mays, 21 points apiece). IRONMEN Senior forward Jordan Fouse enters tonight s game having not just played, but started in all 103 of his games in a Green Bay uniform. Meanwhile, his teammate Carrington Love has also played in all 103 possible games at Green Bay, starting 54 career contests. Among the other 10 active players on the roster, forward Kenneth Lowe (18) has the most games started at the Division I level. #RP40 DEBUTS Darner s defensive philosophy, dubbed RP40 (relentless pressure for 40 minutes), was in full effect in Green Bay s seasonopener at Stanford, as the Phoenix forced the Cardinal into 21 turnovers, the most turnovers forced by a GB squad since Tennessee Tech committed 22 at the Resch Center on December 17, 2013. Stanford had averaged just 10.8 turnovers per game last season. DIVISION I DEBUTS Aside from their coach, a pair of junior college transfers made their debuts at the Division 1 level on Nov. 13 at Stanford, as well, in guard Charles Cooper and forward Jamar Hurdle. RAINING THREE S Green Bay buried 10 three-pointers against Stanford, the first time it has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game since Dec. 28, 2013, against St. Francis. Love converted six of those 10 three s, while Botz hit two and Cooper and Kanter both made one. DEFENSIVELY-SPEAKING Green Bay accumulated 245 steals in 2014-15, second-most on Green Bay s all-time single-season steals list (249, 1993-94). In addition to quick hands, the Phoenix had 161 blocks last season, ranking third-best in program history for a single season. Individually, Fouse had more steals than any junior in program history a year ago (64), after he also broke the freshman (55) and sophomore (68) single-season records. SEVENTY OR LESS EQUALS SUCCESS In the past two seasons, the Phoenix is 40-7 when allowing less than 70. In 27 of those 47 outings, Green Bay allowed less than 60, going 26-1 record in those games. The lone loss in that scenario came in the 2015 Horizon League tournament title game, when the Phoenix fell 54-44 to Valparaiso. SCORING REPLENISHMENT After losing three players who combined for 45 20-point scoring games and eight 30-point scoring games last season, Green Bay will need to multiple players to step up if it wants to challenge for the Horizon League crown. Here are a few candidates: Carrington Love Returns as Green Bay s leading scorer from a season ago, in which he had the only other two 20-point scoring games, including a career-high 28 points in a 78-61 win over R.J. Hunter (19 points) and Georgia State. Charles Cooper Cooper averaged 18.8 points per game as a sophomore at Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill., scoring in double-figures in 24 of 27 games played last season, including 14 games of 20+ points and two 30-point games. He scored a season-high 33 on 9-of-15 shooting in a 93-86 road win over Lincoln Trail College on 2/14/14, while leading the Blue Devils to a 23-9 record. Kenneth Lowe See current season stats and notes on Lowe.

Brown --- 1 Coach Quotables with Linc Darner On his first season: I think we have the guys to play the way I want to play. I think it s important to put the foundation in and build it from there. On the tradition at Green Bay: I know a lot about Green Bay and the tradition that coach Bennett established here. I m kind of a basketball junkie; growing up in Indiana you kind of have to be. I followed the Horizon League with Butler when they were in it. On not having a set starting-five: I told our guys, at Florida Southern my leading minute guy was our sixth man. I had a two-time All- American score 2,300 points in his career and for two and a half years, he came off the bench as our sixth man. On his system: We play faster, so there s going to be more possessions, more shots, they re going to get more opportunities to score. People are going to say, who is this? Why didn t he play more last year? On his team s preparation: I haven t pulled the reigns back on guys yet. I want to see what they can do, what kind of plays they can make. As coaches, we re trying to give them a chance to prove what they can do as a player. Not being around them much only having individual workouts for a long period of time, we didn t know what they could do. On facing tough non-conference opponents: As a player, you always want to see how you stack up against the Power Conferences. Our schedule to start the season did no favors for us. We start with three games in seven days all on the road, so this will be a tough challenge for us before we come home. On playing at 6 a.m. on Nov. 17: I told our guys if you can t be excited to be playing the early game on ESPN (Tip-Off Marathon) there s something wrong with you. If you use it s too early, I m too tired, I can t play, then just stay in bed and we ll play with the guys that want to go. You got to be fired up for those games. On season expectations: The biggest thing for us is to see improvement right now. I don t get caught up in saying we have to win this many games for this to be a successful season. With a new system, we re going to have some ups and downs during the year, it s how do we bounce from that. Our goal is we want to be playing our best in January and February heading into the conference tournament. On returning Green Bay to NCAA tournament: I think you ve got to set high goals for players and we ve talked about it with our guys. We ve said, Hey, our goal is play in the NCAA Tournament. Senior Jordan Fouse grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and guard Khalil Small scored eight points on 3-of-5 from the field, including the lone two triples of the game for the Phoenix, as Green Bay pulled out its second-consecutive victory despite shooting just 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the field, 2-of-13 from beyond the arc (15.4 percent) and 20-of-37 (54.1 percent) from the charity stripe. With just seconds to play in the game, Phoenix junior Charles Cooper knocked down the first of two freethrows, but missed the second, giving Akron a chance to tie the game to force overtime. After forward Kwan Cheatham snared the rebound, he pushed it ahead to Zips leading-scorer Antino Jackson, however the sophomore guard s last-gasp 3-point attempt fell well short. Akron finished equally as cold from the floor, as the smothering Green Bay defense held the Zips to 35 percent (21-60) from the field and 29.2 percent (7-24) from three-point range. The Phoenix forced Akron into 17 turnovers, and have now forced double-digit turnovers in all five games this season. Nine players played at least 12 minutes for head coach Linc Darner, with all 12 of those players scoring in the game. Cooper was the leading point scorer for the Phoenix, finishing with a team-high 14 points and adding eight rebounds. Kenneth Lowe finished with seven points and a career-high four blocks in the game. Linc Darner, who led Florida Southern College to the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship, was named the seventh head coach in the history of the Green Bay men s basketball program, Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie announced on April 14, 2015. Darner is a 13-year head coaching veteran with 292 career wins and a career winning percentage of over.700. From the very start of our process, Linc s experience as a head coach impressed all of us, Gillespie said. He has had tremendous success as a basketball coach and will be an outstanding coach and mentor for our student-athletes. He is a proven winner, and on top of the wins, he runs outstanding programs. After a thorough and comprehensive search process, there is no doubt he is a perfect fit for this institution and our men s basketball program. Darner built a championship program at Florida Southern in his nine seasons at the helm, compiling a record of 218-72. The Moccasins advanced to the NCAA Tournament in eight consecutive seasons (2008-15) and won six Sunshine State Conference regular season championships and six conference tournament titles. In 2014-15, Darner s program posted a 36-1 record and claimed the national championship with a 77-62 victory over Indiana (Pa.) in the title game. Florida Southern was ranked No. 1 in the country, and Darner was recognized as the 2015 NABC Division II National Coach of the Year. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity that I have been preparing for since I began my coaching career, Darner said. I am honored and grateful to lead the Green Bay Phoenix men s basketball program. Thank you to Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie and Chancellor Gary Miller for giving me the opportunity to build upon the Phoenix foundation and compete for championships. My family and I are excited to make Green Bay our home and we look forward to being a part of the community. In his time at Florida Southern, Darner was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year six times. He coached five NABC All-Americans, eight NABC All- South Region selections, four Conference Player of the Year award-winners and 15 All-Sunshine State Conference players. From 2002-06, Darner was the head coach at St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind. Prior to his arrival, the program had only one winning season in eight years, but Darner led the Pumas to a 74-45 overall record. In 2005-06, Darner guided St. Joseph s to a 31-3 record and a No. 2 national ranking. Darner has also been an assistant coach at Ashland University (1998-2002), Lincoln Memorial University (1997-98) and Murray State University (1995-97). An Indiana native, Darner played from 1990-94 at Purdue University, where he was a team captain in 1993-94. During his senior season, Darner helped the Boilermakers to a Big Ten regular season championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight. He graduated from Purdue in 1995 with a bachelor s degree in management. Darner will be joined in Green Bay by his wife Kristen, their daughter Layne (14) and their son Tate (9).
