WORKOUT REPORTS Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch will watch workouts every morning during the Saratoga meet and pass along key observations for horseplayers. BY MIKE WELSCH CAPE GLORY, a lightly raced 3yo trained by Ian Wilkes, finished extremely well, completing the final quarter of a :49.15 half-mile drill in :24.03 without need of urging, galloped out another eighth-mile into the turn in :13 on July 18. DECODER, a son of War Front, was slightly best of a pair of Shug McGaughey-trained babies from the gate on July 18, breezing five furlongs in :47.74 and galloping out five-eighths in 1:01.11. GOODTIME BOY, a 3-year-old New York-bred claimed by trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. for $25,000 in April, sizzled four furlongs in :46.07, posting even 23-second quarter-mile splits before galloping out five furlongs in :58.59 over the main track on July 18. He continues to look razor sharp. CARRIED INTEREST, arguably the most impressive 2-year-old maiden winner in New York thus far this summer, was kept on his toes breezing a very easy half-mile in :49.72 from the threeeighths pole into the turn on July 19. Speedy colt is pointing for the Saratoga Special later this month. AWESOME WEEKEND, a New York-bred son of Any Given Saturday, ran well in his debut and looks poised to graduate soon after working five furlongs in 1:02.23 on July 19, shading 24 seconds for his final quarter-mile while not being asked to the wire. SPA BABIES BY DAN ILLMAN Welcome to Spa Babies! I ll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet and hope for a tidy profit. In past years, I would list the stats for each horse before writing up my analysis, selections, and wagering strategy. In order to streamline the content, this year s Spa Babies will showcase written analyses of each juvenile race. Each analysis will include relevant statistical information. Following the analysis, top three selections and wagering strategy will be provided. RACE 3 1. WINE GLOW, a $250,000 yearling by two-time Breeders Cup Classic winner Tiznow (87-617, 14% with juveniles), is the first starter out of Cool Storm, an unraced Storm Cat dam that sold for a million dollars as a yearling and is a full sister to Haskell winner Bluegrass Cat (5-11, 1.7M, 3-4 at two, 1-2 sprinting) and stakes-winner Sonoma Cat (3-10, 132K, 2-3 in dirt sprints). Cool Storm is also a half-sister to Prairie Meadows Cornhusker winner Lord of the Game (8-18, 543K) and stakes-placed sprinter Cal Nation (3-9, 127K, 3-6 in dirt sprints). Trainer Wayne Lukas is 32-504 (6%, $1.40 ROI) over the past five years with juveniles (11-133, 8%, $2.35 ROI at Saratoga). Wine Glow ran into two next-out winners in her career debut. Blueeyesintherein, the winner of that race, returned to take the Grade 3 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs with a 69 Beyer while fifth-finisher Wildcat Angie graduated with a 77 Beyer at Churchill on June 8. Wide in both starts, she draws a tough inside post position this afternoon and faces some promising youngsters. 2. LIGNITE, a half-brother to juvenile stakeswinner Backdoor Kenny (2-3, 74K, all races sprinting at two), is a $35,000 yearling purchase by undefeated Saratoga Special winner Run Away and Hide (3-3, 224K, all races sprinting at two, 1-14, 7% with juveniles from his first crop of 2012) out of an unraced dam (cost $85,000 as a yearling) that has foaled a winner from two runners (1-2 with 2yos, 1-2 with sprinters). Showed high speed against males last-out in a Belmont maiden won by Todd Pletcher-trained firster Rose Junction (88 Beyer). The dam is a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winner Mountain Range (8-39, 428K, 3-7 at two, 3-16 sprinting) and juvenile stakes-winning sprinter Royal Vindication (2-13, 140K, 2-5 at two, 2-10 sprinting), and is a full sister to multiple stakes-placed Mrs Petoski (5-19, 148K, 1-3 at two, 0-3 in dirt sprints). Trainer Wesley Ward is 50-163 (31%, $1.84 ROI) over the past five years with juveniles $2.04 ROI with similar runners at Saratoga). Lignite drops back in with fillies, but she failed to take advantage of an inside, speed-favoring track last time out. Still, barring a quick firster, she looms a dangerous early presence. 3. KIMONO was bought back for $80,000 as a yearling, but sold for $550,000 earlier this year

after breezing a furlong in 10.2 seconds. By Preakness winner Bernardini (10-68, 15% with juvenile debut runners, 3-24, 13%, $1.99 ROI with debut winners in 2012), Kimono is out of a stakes-placed sprinter (2-17, 66K, 1-9 at two, 0-5 sprinting, sold for $130,000 as yearling) that has foaled a winner from two starters (0-1 with 2yos, 0-2 with sprinters). This is the female family of Vosburgh winner A Phenomenon and Spinaway heroine Seattle Meteor. Gone West is 8-26 (31%, $4.93 ROI) as the broodmare sire of ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The June 12 workout went.01 faster than Pletcher s juvenile filly Colorful Image (3rd in MSW on turf at BEL on July 12 with 54 Beyer). The June 19, June 26, July 3 and July 16 workouts match Pletcher s juvenile filly Kauai Katie (entered in today s second division). The July 9 workout went.02 faster than Pletcher s juvenile Rose Junction (won MSW debut at BEL on June 8 with 88 Beyer). Kimono must be respected off breeding, connections and workouts. 4. NOLA GIRL, bred in Louisiana, is by Lecomte hero Storm Surge, a juvenile debut winner that scored five sprints and is 0-8 with juvenile debut runners. She is the first starter out of a dam that sold for $167,000 as a weanling and was unplaced from one sprint start at two. The dam is a half-sister to juvenile stakes-placed router Sugar Pine (2-15, 50K, 1-6 at two, 1-6 sprinting). Trainer Dallas Stewart is 5-91 (5%, $1.34 runners (3-20, 15%, $5.56 ROI at Saratoga). Stewart is 1-10 (10%, $0.52 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The April 30, May 9, May 17, May 25, June 2, June 8, June 15 workouts match Stewart s juvenile filly Cora Mesa (finished third in MSW debut at CD on June 21 with 56 Beyer). This barn gears their youngsters up for this meet and Julien Leparoux is enticed to ride. 5. LIBERTY GIRL, a half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice (3-13, 1.6M, 1-2 at two, 1-2 sprinting), Acorn and Test winner Champagne d Oro (3-23, 614K, 0-6 at two, 2-14 sprinting) and juvenile stakes-placed sprinter Lost On Champagne (1-10, 26K, 1-2 at two, won debut, all races sprinting), sold for $130,000 as a weanling. The sire, San Felipe and La Jolla winner A.P. Warrior, is 3-41 (7%) with juvenile debut runners (1-11. 9%, $1.38 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam was a stakes-winning sprinter (3-17, 128K, 2-6 at two, won debut, 2-10 sprinting) and has foaled 10 winners from 11 runners (3-8 with juveniles, 1 debut winner, 7-11 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to Italian Group 3 winner Jurado, juvenile stakes-winner Track Dance (8-34, 110K, 2-9 at two, 1-11 sprinting), stakes-placed Elegant Champagne (2-11, 35K, 0-1 sprinting), and Hollywood Futurity and Norfolk winner Grand Canyon (4-8, 1.0M, all races at two, 1-4 sprinting). Trainer Eoin Harty is 3-91 (3%, $0.20 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (0-21 at Saratoga). Harty is 0-16 with all debut runners in 2012. The July 8 workout matches Harty s 5-year-old D tiger (best Beyer of 78 on polytrack, 76 on turf, and 52 on dirt). A well-bred filly, Liberty Girl has been working swiftly over the Keeneland polytrack and is the rider s first call. 6. TOASTING, a Florida-bred half-sister to multiple stakes-winner Riversrunrylee (17-74, 348K, 3-21 sprinting), went for $47,000 as a yearling before being purchased for $175,000 in March after breezing a furlong in 10.2 seconds. The sire won the San Pasqual and is 13-100 (13%) with juvenile debut runners (1-17, 6%, $0.24 ROI with all debut runners in 2010). The dam was a sprint winner (1-29, 13K, 0-7 at two, 1-22 sprinting, sold for $17,500 as a juvenile) and has foaled six winners from seven runners (0-2 with 2yos, 6-7 with sprinters). This is the female family of multiple Group 3 turf winner Leap Lively. Prized is 1-16 (6%, $0.66 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Tom Albertrani is 12-99 (12%, $2.21 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (1-24, 4%, $1.84 ROI at Saratoga). Albertrani is 2-27 (7%, $1.39 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. This one boasts a solid win-early pedigree. 7. SUSTAINED, a $300,000 yearling purchase, is by Alfred G. Vanderbilt winner War Front (2-63, 3% with juvenile debut runners, 3-27, 11%, $0.98 ROI with all debut runners in 2012) out of an unraced dam that sold for $125,000 as a yearling. The dam has foaled two winners from as many runners (0-1 with 2yos, 2-2 with sprinters) and is a half-sister to juvenile stakeswinning sprinter Sungold Skippy (1-13, 34K, 1-7 at two, 1-10 sprinting). Lemon Drop Kid is 3-18 (17%, $2.83 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Dale Romans is 26-226 (12%, $1.71 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (3-23, 13%, $2.62 ROI at Saratoga). Romans is 5-40 (13%, $0.82 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The June 15 workout matches Romans 3-year-old filly Get Er Up (62 Beyer top). The June 24 workout went.05 faster than Romans juvenile filly Merkadona (entered in today s second division) and Romans 3-yearold gelding Prime Devil (finished fourth in MSW debut on turf at BEL on July 14 with 56 Beyer). 8. OSCAR PARTY is a half-brother to Arlington- Washington Futurity winner Major Gain (1-6, 93K, 1-4 at two, 0-1 sprinting) by Haskell and Malibu winner Dixie Union (31-267, 12% with juvenile debut runners, 4-27, 15%, $2.39 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam, a $170,000 yearling, was a stakes-winner on grass (4-17, 230K, 1-3 at two, 0-1 sprinting) and has foaled a winner from one prior runner (1-1 at two, 0-1 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to stakes-winner Zeta (4-12, 126K, 1-3 at two, 0-1 sprinting). Old Trieste is 1-11 (9%, $0.42 ROI) as Trainer Wayne Catalano is 22-103 (21%, $1.50 runners. Catalano is 6-31 (19%, $3.85 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. It s hard to knock this trainer and barn. 9. MY HAPPY FACE, the jockey s second call, must break in from the also-eligible list. A $35,000 yearling by Kentucky Jockey Club winner Tiz Wonderful (3-5, 254K, 3-3 at two, 1-1 sprinting, 1-5, 20%, $2.60 ROI with juvenile debut runners from his first crop of 2012), My Happy Face is out of a stakes-winning sprinter (4-14, 82K, 4-13 sprinting) that has foaled one winner from one starter (older debut winner sprinting). The dam is a full sister to stakes-winning sprinter Summer Sensation (6-19, 79K, 6-18 sprinting). Siberian Summer is 2-9 (22%, $2.88 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez is 4-20 (20%, $3.81 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (1-3, 33%, $9.00 ROI at Saratoga). The June 22 workout matches Rodriguez juvenile filly Riptherubberoff (finished second in SMSW debut at BEL on July 14 with 41 Beyer). The July 6 workout matches Rodriguez juvenile Mr Rodriguez (won SMSW debut at BEL on May 24 with 52 Beyer). 1. Kimono 2. Lignite 3. Liberty Girl Kimono - Lignite EXACTA Kimono - Liberty Girl EXACTA RACE 5 1. KAUAI KATIE, a $90,000 yearling purchase, resold for $490,000 in March after breezing a furlong in 10 seconds. The sire, a juvenile sprint winner, is 51-318 (16%) with juvenile debut runners (7-43, 16%, $1.63 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The stakes-winning dam (3-17, 210K, 1-8 at two, won debut, 2-13 sprinting, sold for $115,000 at two) has foaled a winner from two runners (0-1 with 2yos, 1-2 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to stakeswinning turf performer Ingrid the Gambler (2-8, 110K, 0-1 in dirt sprints). More Than Ready is 4-19 (21%, $1.60 ROI) as the broodmare sire of ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The June 19, June 26, July 3 and July 16 workouts match Pletcher s juvenile filly Kimono (entered in the

first division). The July 9 workout matches Pletcher s 3-year-old filly Victory Island (best Beyer of 81). Kauai Katie must deal with an intimidating inside post, but don t be surprised if this one shows good early speed. 2. LENDEROFLASTRESORT, bred in Florida, is a half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Bling (5-37, 97K, 1-5 at two, 4-28 sprinting) and multiple stakes-winner Pashito the Che (8-23, 568K, 1-4 at two, 7-19 sprinting). A $45,000 yearling buyback, Lenderoflastresort sold for $100,000 in April after breezing a quarter-mile in 21 seconds. The sire won the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash and is 47-364 (13%) with juvenile debut runners (4-28, 14%, $1.98 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam was a sprint winner (2-10, 45K, 2-9 sprinting) that has foaled four winners from four runners (1-1 with 2yos, 4-4 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter Chasseresse (5-38, 153K, 1-8 at two, 5-27 sprinting), juvenile stakes-placed router Twirl (1-5, 60K, 1-5 at two, 1-3 sprinting) and stakes-placed router Heir D Twine (7-49, 190K, 1-3 at two, 0-4 sprinting). Pentelicus is 3-24 (13%, $0.72 ROI) as Trainer Rick Violette is 19-81 (23%, $2.29 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (6-20, 30%, $3.16 ROI at Saratoga). Violette is 1-6 (17%, $1.35 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The June 15 workout matches Violette s 5-year-old mare Deflate the Bubble (best Beyer of 70). This ownership group does very well with firsters and Lenderoflastresort is bred for speed on both sides of the pedigree. 3. DISTORTION, a $300,000 yearling listed as a vet scratch on July 4, is by a sire that won a pair of Grade 2 sprints. Distorted Humor is 54-311 (18%) with juvenile debut runners (3-28, 11%, $0.91 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam won the Old Hat Stakes (4-8, 184K, 2-2 at two, 4-8 sprinting, cost $15,000 as yearling) and has foaled a runner that did not win (0-1 with sprinters). The dam is a full sister to Lazaro Barrera Memorial winner Storm Wolf (3-5, 147K, 0-1 at two, 3-5 sprinting). Stormin Fever is 1-19 (5%, $0.37 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Nick Zito is 9-146 (6%, $1.26 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (4-64, 6%, $0.82 ROI at Saratoga). Zito is 1-25 (4%, $0.87 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The May 27 workout went.05 slower than Zito s juvenile Flying Bird (finished third in MSW debut at BEL on June 28 with 65 Beyer). The July 5 workout matches Zito s 3-year-old Round Midnight (72 Beyer top). Boasts a solid pedigree and attracts Javier Castellano to ride. 4. CHARMING BECKY, bred in Florida, sold for $50,000 as a yearling before being purchased for $160,000 in March. At the latter auction, Charming Becky breezed a furlong in 10.1 seconds. The sire won the Haskell and the Malibu and is 124-794 (16%) with juvenile runners. The unplaced dam (0-4, 0-1 at two, 0-3 sprinting, cost $80,000 as a yearling) has foaled two runners that did not win (0-2 with 2yos, 0-2 with sprinters) and is a half-sister to German stakes-winner Matula and Ruffian Handicap winner Mandy s Gold (11-24, 1.0M, 1-1 at two, 9-14 sprinting). Trainer Eddie Kenneally is 19-112 (17%, $1.41 ROI) over the past five years with second-time juveniles (2-17, 12%, $1.12 ROI at Saratoga). Charming Becky was no match for 77-Beyer winner Can t Explain in the debut run, but that filly will be featured later this afternoon in the Schuylerville for Todd Pletcher. 5. KANSAS, withdrawn twice from yearling auctions, is by Hopeful winner Majestic Warrior (2-7, 239K, 2-3 at two, 2-4 sprinting, 2-19, 11% with his first-crop juveniles). The dam placed sprinting (0-11, 0-7 at two, 0-7 sprinting) and has foaled four winners from five runners (2-4 with 2yos, 2-4 with sprinters in North America). The second dam is Del Mar Debutante winner Lea Lucinda (3-19, 511K, 3-9 at two, 1-4 sprinting). Trainer Wesley Ward is 50-163 (31%, $1.84 ROI) over the past five years with juveniles $2.04 ROI with similar runners at Saratoga). Like Charming Becky, Kansas finished behind the promising Can t Explain at Belmont, but Kansas did stumble leaving the gate that afternoon. With an alert break, Kansas can be a strong forward factor here. 6. RUBY LIPS, bred in Ontario, is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winner Like a Gem (6-18, 554K, 1-3 at two, won debut, 2-6 sprinting), stakes-winning sprinter Win and Reign (3-36, 212K, 1-5 at two, 3-31 sprinting), and multiple Grade 3-placed router Cool Gator (1-30, 299K, 1-5 at two, 0-1 sprinting). A $220,000 yearling purchase, Ruby Lips is by King s Bishop winner Hard Spun (5-59, 8% with juvenile debut runners, 6-37, 16%, $2.14 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam was placed routing (0-5, sold for $35,000 as yearling) and has foaled five winners from five runners (3-5 with 2yos, 1 debut winner, 4-5 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to stakes-placed Out Of a Cannon (10-74, 116K, 3-16 sprinting), stakes-winner Senor Verde (6-33, 65K, 2-6 at two, 2-10 sprinting), Young America winner Firery Ensign (3-12, 350K, 3-6 at two, 2-6 sprinting), stakes-placed juvenile Katie Katie (6-41, 111K, 0-3 at two, 0-4 sprinting), and juvenile stakes-winning turf performer Kimberlight (3-9, 37K, 2-8 at two, 0-5 sprinting). Rubiano is 2-18 (11%, $1.80 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. is 13-93 (14%, $1.28 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (4-15, 27%, $2.26 ROI at Saratoga). Dutrow is 2-18 (11%, $2.02 ROI) with all debut runners in 2012. The June 6 workout matches Dutrow s juvenile filly Form Fitting (finished third in MSW debut at Belmont on July 4 with 53 Beyer). The June 12, June 18 workouts match Dutrow s juvenile filly Minx (finished fourth in MSW debut at Belmont on July 4 with 45 Beyer). The July 12 workout matches Dutrow s 4-year-old Isn t He Perfect (best Beyer of 99). She seems to be picking up the pace in recent drills. 7. GARMENTOS GIRL, an $110,000 short yearling buyback, sold for $250,000 as a yearling. The sire won the Santa Anita Derby and is 42-265 (16%) with juvenile debut runners (7-30, 23%, $2.32 ROI with all debut runners in 2012). The dam won on turf (1-11, 19K, 0-3 sprinting) and has foaled a winner from two runners (0-2 with 2yos, 0-1 with sprinters). The dam is a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winner Maple Lake (7-44, 296K, 2-6 at two, won debut, 6-35 sprinting) and to Woodward Stakes and Donn Handicap winner Formal Gold (8-16, 1.5M, 2-2 sprinting). Miswaki is 3-22 (14%, $1.57 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. Trainer Shug Mc- Gaughey is 3-66 (5%, $0.58 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile debut runners (1-29, 3%, $0.51 ROI at Saratoga). The June 4 workout matches McGaughey s 6-year-old Hymn Book (finished second in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont on July 7 with 104 Beyer). The July 14 workout matches McGaughey s 3-yearold filly Scampering (66 Beyer top). Well-bred with interesting workouts, but barn sometimes gives their charges a race before they fire their best. 8. MERKADONA sold for $10,000 as a weanling before being purchased for $33,000 last year. The first-crop sire won the Forego Handicap (6-14, 580K, 1-3 at two, 4-10 sprinting) and is 0-4 with juvenile debut runners. The unplaced dam (0-2, 0-2 at two, 0-1 sprinting) has foaled one winner from one runner (0-1 sprinting). The second dam is multiple stakes-winner Sheldons Jet (12-43, 299K, 2-9 at two, 1-9 sprinting). Forestry is 3-35 (9%, $1.21 ROI) as the broodmare sire of debut runners in 2012. The June 24 workout matches Romans 3-year-old gelding Prime Devil (finished fourth in MSW debut on turf at BEL on July 14 with 56 Beyer). The June 24 workout went.05 slower than Romans juvenile filly Sustained (entered in today s first division). 9. THE PARTY S HERE must break in from the alsoeligible list. A $4,000 yearling, The Party s Here is a half-sister to stakes-placed Forbidden Bear (7-36, 216K, 1-1 at two, 4-22 sprinting). The stakes-placed sire is 39-302 (13%) with juveniles and the unraced dam foaled three winners from five runners (2-4 with 2yos, 3-5 with sprinters). The third dam is juvenile stakes-placed sprinter One for Smoke (2-17, 27K, 1-8 at two, 2-15 sprinting). Trainer Matthew Peebles is 0-8 over the past five years with second-time juveniles. Tackled a solid group in Big A debut as the winner returned to take the Track Barron Stakes with a 93 Beyer while the runner-up came back to graduate with a 77 Beyer.

1. Kauai Katie 2. Garmentos Girl 3. Lenderoflastresort Kauai Katie - Garmentos Girl EXACTA Kauai Katie - Lenderoflastresort EXACTA RACE 9 6 Furlongs Schuylerville Stakes (G3) Purse $150,000 1. SWEET SHIRLEY MAE, listed as a vet scratch on June 11, is a $60,000 yearling out of stakeswinning turf performer Joyful Chaos (5-17, 235K, 0-3 sprinting). She was well-prepared by juvenile guru Wesley Ward for her debut against males in the slop at Belmont and was flattered when the runner-up, Bern Identity, returned to graduate by 13 3/4 lengths with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Sweet Shirley Mae drew a tough inside post and may face several pace challengers from her outside. Ward is 1-9 (11%, $2.31 ROI) over the past five years with second-out juvenile maiden winners stepping up to tackle graded foes. 2. BABY J, a $37,000 yearling that was bought back for $65,000 in March, was purchased privately following her 84-Beyer debut at Belmont. She went gate-to-wire that day, but got away with an easy opening two furlongs and just held on at the wire. She was rambunctious behind the starting gate that afternoon so you may want to take a look at how she s behaving in the paddock and post parade prior to the Schuylerville. She is by J Be K, a first-crop stallion that won the Woody Stephens Stakes (5-9, 440K, 1-1 at two, 5-7 sprinting) and is a half-sister to stakes-winning turf performer Laureate Conductor (4-25, 297K) and stakes-placed sprinter Que Posse (5-12, 193K, 5-11 sprinting). She owns the best Beyer Speed Figure, but may have to go faster in the early stages. Now with Richard Dutrow Jr., she can t be ignored. 3. BROWN EYES BLUE, a $70,000 yearling that resold for $180,000 in April, is from the first crop of the popular Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown (7-8, 3.6M, 1-1 at two). The winless dam is a half-sister to Mac Diarmida Handicap winner Hotstufanthensome (13-45, 756K), multiple stakes-winner Tacit Agreement (7-20, 336K) and All Along Stakes heroine Silver Charades (4-15, 250K). Although she only received a 60 Beyer for her debut win at Churchill Downs, Brown Eyes Blue had to go fast early and she still held strong in the lane. Trainer Dale Romans is 1-10 (10%, $0.56 ROI) over the past five years with second-out juveniles stepping up into graded stakes. Expect Brown Eyes Blue to be among the early leaders and is capable of normal improvement. 4. CAN T EXPLAIN, a $150,000 juvenile purchase has the experience edge on the field as she s the lone baby in the race with two prior starts. Although defeated by Fully Living in her debut, the New Jersey-bred returned last month with a vengeance, winning off by 4 1/2 lengths after showing sharp early speed. The jury is still out as to the quality of the competition she beat on June 20, but she earned a competitive figure, is trained by the great Todd Pletcher, and draws a solid post outside some of the other speeds. Pletcher is 8-56 (14%, $0.75 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile maiden graduates leaping into graded stakes company. A full sister to Commonwealth Stakes winner Together Indy (3-15, 229K, 3-12 sprinting), Can t Explain looms a solid contender. 5. FULLY LIVING cost $425,000 as a yearling and is a beautifully-bred daughter of Unbridled s Song out of a half-sister to Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Halfbridled. Fully Living showed grit in her debut in beating back Can t Explain after a race-long battle. Trainer Ken McPeek is 0-9 over the past five years with second-time juveniles stepping up from maiden to graded stakes, but one of those babies, Beautician, finished second in the 2009 Schuylerville. Fully Living draws nicely and can t be dismissed. 6. MR HALL S OPUS, a half-sister to multiple juvenile stakes-winning sprinter Truth and Justice (4-7, 238K, 4-7 at two, 4-6 sprinting) splashed home in the mud to win her maiden at Belmont, but the Beyer came back awfully light. The dam was a juvenile stakes-winner (3-13, 69K, 3-7 at two, 2-7 sprinting), but there is a 28-day gap in the work tab (as of this writing) and Mr Hall s Opus must improve her speed figure drastically. Trainer Kelly Breen does good work with young runners (1-2, 50%, $2.80 ROI over the past five years with second-out juveniles going from maiden to graded stakes). 7. SO MANY WAYS, bred in Pennsylvania, is a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter Scherzi (12-35, 121K, 12-29 sprinting) by first-crop sire Sightseeing (won the Peter Pan, 2-18, 508K, 1-5 at two, 0-2 sprinting). A $22,000 yearling, So Many Ways adds Lasix after dominating maidens at Parx on June 9. This looks like a big class hike and So Many Ways may have to rate and finish this time around. Dutrow sent out Grace Hall to win last year s Spinaway in her second start (1-5, 20%, $1.76 ROI over the past five years with second-time juveniles going from maiden to graded stakes. 1. Baby J 2. Can t Explain 3. Sweet Shirley Mae The Play: Baby J Can t Explain EXACTA Baby J Sweet Shirley Mae EXACTA RACE 3 1.

3. KIMONO was bought back for $80,000 as a yearling, but sold for $550,000 earlier this year after breezing a furlong in 10.2 seconds. The July 9 workout went.02 faster than Pletcher s juvenile Rose Junction (won MSW debut at BEL on June 8 with 88 Beyer). Kimono must be respected off breeding, connections and workouts. 4. The June 24 workout matches Romans 3-year-old gelding Prime Devil (finished fourth in MSW debut on turf at BEL on July 14 with 56 Beyer). The June 24 workout went.05 slower than Romans juvenile filly Sustained (entered in today s first division). 9. THE PARTY S HERE must break in from the also-eligible list. The third dam is juvenile stakesplaced sprinter One for Smoke (2-17, 27K, 1-8 at two, 2-15 sprinting). Trainer Matthew Peebles is 0-8 over the past five years with second-time juveniles. Tackled a solid group in Big A debut

as the winner returned to take the Track Barron Stakes with a 93 Beyer while the runner-up came back to graduate with a 77 Beyer. 1. Baby J 2.
