O U T D O O R E D U C A T I O N : Jonginenge offers safe, exciting and educational experiences for schools. Learners work in small groups and participate in practical tasks, environmental education and adventure activities. Our program offers different outings for each grade so learners enjoy a unique experience each year they visit. N A H O O N N A T U R E R E S E R V E We are based at Nahoon Beach, in The Nahoon Point and Estuary Nature Reserve, where we offer half day (3-4 hours) and full day (2 x 3 hours) outings. We are also fully mobile and can offer our services at a venue of your choice. For 2-3 day camps we use Cefani Resort and Palm Springs. We can accommodate up to a whole grade at a time. G R A D E R : B E A C H D I S C O V E R Y D A Y Sand sculptures, introduction to rock pool sea creatures, bum boarding, beach treasure & shell collection, beach art (plaster footpint & sand sculpture), spacial awareness game, climbing the tallest dune to spot whales, dolphins, ships, plastic pollution... why and how we can reduce it. "The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery." -Mark Van Doren

GRADE 1: ESTUARY INTRODUCTION Learners enjoy a canoe ride on the river with lifeguards, learn about sun and beach safety, the sandy beach cleanup squad, discuss pollution story cards, create beach art, study the estuary food web, draw shell pictographs and swim in the river. GRADE 2: HANDS ON ROCK POOLS Learners take part in a hands on rock pool study, snorkel in Mermaid's Pool, boogie board, learn about the marine food chain and adaptations to life in rock pools. GRADE 3: BEACH ECOSYSTEM Learn to surf, sandboard, build 3D beach maps, and learn about dune plants and the sandy beach ecosystem, plastic pollution in the marine food chain, lifesaving and beach safety.

GRADE 4: SARDINE RUN MADNESS Discover the Sardine Run, known as the "Greatest shoal on Earth", brave the fear factor sardine challenge, climbing wall, escaping the grip of a rip and 3D rip currents, surfing or boogie boarding and dune forest walk. GRADE 5: THE STRANDLOPERS Hike along a series of wind and wave cut sandstone coves and secret beaches, discover shell middens, ancient fossil footprints and the way of life of the San or strandlopers. Visit amazing viewpoints, Monster's Cave, learn about sewage waste management and endangered animals. End your day with a swim in Mermaid's Pool.

GRADE 6: ESTUARINE WETLANDS Visit the Dassie Trail Nature Reserve to learn about biodiversity, invertebrates in the mud flats, adaptations of birds to their feeding habitat, fish in the estuary, the mangrove ecosystem, medicinal plants, biggest threats to estuarine wetlands and enjoy a canoe trail on the Nahoon River. GRADE 6 & 11: LEADERSHIP DAY The Grade 6 s and 11's are the future leaders of the school. They need to learn about the core concepts of team work and leadership. Jonginenge offers a leadership experience comprising competitive team challenges requiring initiative, shared problem solving, communication and team work. We are able to accommodate the whole grade at once. Each activity offers an important leadership lesson.

GRADE 7: INVERTEBRATES OF THE SEA This outing focuses on the classification of speciesvertebrates and invertebrates. This is a detailed hands on rock pool study on a spring low tide and option of snorkelling in Mermaid's Pool. Learners examine the adaptations of birds, invertebrates and fish. We also cover legislation, sustainable use of resources, and endangered species. OUTINGS FOR HIGH SCHOOLS GEOGRAPHY EXPLORER This outing requires learners to navigate using handheld compass, GPS, aerial photographs and maps. The activity takes place in the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve and also covers coastal landforms, erosion processes, pollution and human waste management. BIOLOGY ENQUIRER Learners study the biodiversity of the estuary and rocky shore ecosystems. Concepts include classification of species, adaptations to habitat and diet, symbiotic relationships, useful & medicinal plants, endangered species, sustainable use of resources, and legislation.

ECO-TOURISM ADVENTURER Eco-tourism is a massive world wide industry with much potential for young entrepreneurs. Learners explore our beaches, forests, mountains and rivers while canoeing, surfing, abseiling, sand boarding, snorkeling or hiking.
