A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PERPETUAL TROPHIES SAM HORDERN MEMORIAL CUP Donated by the family of the late Mr W.E. Burchell in memory of Mr Sam Hordern, a former patron of the Society. Mr Hordern s father, the late Sir Samuel Hordern, was one of Bowral s first and most successful breeders of horses. BURRADOO REX MEMORIAL TROPHY This trophy perpetuates the memory of one of Australia s best known Australian Pony Stallions, who spent his life at the McLean s Burradoo Stud. JEAN MCLEAN MEMORIAL TROPHY In Memory of Miss McLean. STONNINGTON CUP This is a perpetual trophy donated by the Moss family in memory of past President Mr N.L. Moss, who was an untiring worker for the society for many years. GYPSY STAR MEMORIAL TROPHY Another perpetual trophy, donated by the owner of the well-known Gypsy Star, Mrs Maree Ellicott - and the prize money is also donated in the pony s memory by Mrs Ellicott s parents the late Mr. K.M. & Mrs A. Chadwick who have had a life-long interest in the Show Society. TROPHY FOR THE CHAMPION SADDLE PONY Donated by Mr S. Hordern, Junior, who carried on his father s and grandfather s interest in the improvement of the horses in the district. CINDY MEMORIAL TROPHY FOR THE CHAMPION GALLOWAY HACK Presented by Miss Judith Green, a former President and Secretary of the Society and for many years a member of the Committee. THE J.R. (BOSS) AND HARRY SMITH MEMORIAL TROPHY Donated by Lyn Goulder in memory Harry and his father Boss, who were competitors at the first Bowral Show held in 1927. Harry was a past ring master, vice president, patron and Life Member of the society. THE DAVIS MEMORIAL CUP Donated by the well-known Bowral family of Mr A. Garnett Davis, who for many years have supported the Society. MIN SMITH MEMORIAL TROPHY Donated by Lyn Goulder in memory of the late Min Smith, former Life Member, and a sincere and tireless worker for the Society. THE WHY AMBER CUP In Memory of Miss D. Swanston, Life Member and Treasurer for many years of the Bowral Show Society. Why Amber won 9 Championships and 3 Reserves at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. TROPHY FOR THE CHAMPION JUNIOR RIDER A Trophy donated by Mr Graeme Spackman, a very well-known and successful competitor; having won, amongst other events, the boy Rider and Turnout at the Sydney Royal Show for six years in succession. THE STEPHENS MEMORIAL CUP Presented by Mrs D.R. Barsby in memory of her parents, Mr and Mrs N.A. Stephens. Mr Norrie Stephens for many years was President of the Show Society. THE SOMMERS CUP Presented by another well-known district family, who have been willing to help the Society in all ways. THE BLAKE PELLY CUP In Memory of Mr Blake Pelly, who was one of the founders of Polocrosse in this district THE HORDERN MEMORIAL TROPHY Presented by one of the Society s past Presidents, Mr R.C. Smith, in memory of the late Mr Sam Hordern, who had always taken a keen interest in show jumping and international equestrian events. THE D.M. SWANSTON MEMORIAL TROPHY A perpetual trophy, the D.M. Swanston memorial Trophy has been presented by Mrs W. Sommers in memory of the late Miss. D. Swanston, Life Member and long-time Treasurer of the Society THE GORDON SPACKMAN MEMORIAL TROPHY Donated by members of the Spackman family in memory of Mr Gordon Spackman a keen supporter of the society over very many years. THE JACK WARBURTON MEMORIAL TROPHY In memory or Mr. Jack Warburton, Past President and long time Life Member of the Society. THE ROMA ARNULL MEMORIAL Special ribbon in memory of Mrs. Roma Arnull, Life Member of the Society and a great supporter of its events over many years. THE JACK DUFF MEMORIAL Special ribbon in memory or Mr. Jack Duff who was a Life Member and Patron of the Society as well as a tireless worker. THE FRANZ MAIRINGER MEMORIAL Special ribbon in memory of Mr. Franz Mairinger, a great supporter of the Society. THE BILL GRIFFITHS MEMORIAL Special ribbon in memory of Mr. Bill Griffiths, a keen worker for Showjumping over many years. General Regulations and By-Laws 1. No exhibitor will be allowed in that section in which his exhibit is placed during the judging, except by permission of the Stewards and it shall be the duty of the Stewards to prevent any person interfering with the judges, and if necessary, order the removal of such offenders from the ground. 2. Entries on the day. 3. Under no circumstances will any exhibit be allowed to enter the judging arena without the production of a numbered ticket. 4. The Society will not be responsible for any accident or loss that may occur to any exhibitor during the Show, and it shall be a condition of entry that exhibitor shall hold the Society blameless and indemnify it against any legal proceedings arising from such accident. Every reasonable care will be taken to prevent accidents. 5. The owner or exhibitor of any exhibit disapproved of as an exhibit by the Committee must, immediately upon notice to that effect, remove such exhibit from the ground. 6. Exhibitors, if called upon by the Committee, shall prove the correctness of their Certificate of Entry. 7. Electrified tape for temporary horse yards must be constructed with two strands of conductive tape. The tape should be attached with insulated fasteners to well driven steel pickets fitted with protective plastic caps. A sign should be erected on the fence: Take Care Electric Fence. Protests, Etc. 7. Protests made against any award on first and second days must be lodged in writing with the Secretary at the office on the ground not later than 3pm, on the second day of the show, ring events excepted, which may be protested up to 3pm on last day of Show. All protests to be decided on the ground if possible. A deposit of $20 must be made, which shall be forfeited if the protest be deemed frivolous. 8. Should any exhibit having gained a prize be disqualified, the next on the list does not necessarily gain the prize. The Committee with or without the advice of the judges, shall decide the same. 9. No entry will be received except on condition that all disputes, objections, or protests shall be decided by the Committee, whose decision shall be final. Accident & Public Risk All exhibitors must sign indemnity forms and wear wrist bands provided before entry to Judging areas. The society will not be responsible for any accident that may be caused through or by any exhibitor or competitor, or as a result of any act of neglect of any Steward or member of the Committee or public, and it shall be a condition of entry that each Exhibitor shall hold the Society harmless, and indemnify if against any legal proceedings arising from any such accident, and agree to all the rules. Damage to Exhibits the Society will not, under any circumstances, hold itself responsible for any loss or misdelivery of Live Stock or other exhibits at the Society s Exhibition, or for any damage thereto or loss thereof. Electric Leads Ensure all electrical leads have current valid approval tags and are to be placed either underground or above reach overhead by the exhibitor or showman. Indemnity & Waiver Indemnity and waiver form must be completed by all exhibitors and handlers before entering the rings Special Regulations 1. 3. All exhibits must be measured if required by the Chief Steward. 1/2 in. allowed for shoes. 4. All Stallions three years and over must undergo a veterinary examination if called upon to do so. 5. Stallions are only eligible for classes stated as such 6. Stallions must wear a bit while being handled and competing 7. Where possible all stallions are to be stabled or stallions must wear a collar which is securely tied to truck or trailer and must be supervised at all times 8. Riders or handlers of stallions must be over the age of 17 years. 9. No sharp spurs allowed. Whips subject to approval of Stewards. 10. District shall be confined to the Shire of Wingecarribee and must be owned and stabled within the shire for 3 months prior to Show. 11. Novice shall mean any competitor or horse which has not won or divided a first prize at any recognised Show. Winners of Novice classes may be called upon to sign a statutory declaration as to their status. 12. Intermediate - Horse or rider who has not won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize in a solo event at any Royal Show. 13. All competitors in junior events must supply birth certificates if required. 14. All entries are subject to the Society s Regulations. Improper Behaviour 1. Outside assistance to competitors by word, by radio or any other method in Horse Ring Events will NOT be permitted. If in breach of this ruling, competitors and their exhibits may be dismissed from the event and from the Showground. Competitor names to be submitted to the ASC. 2. Any person, including an exhibitor or competitor who, inside or outside the show ring in the opinion of the Committee, behaves in an offensive, threatening or insulting manner, uses any threatening, abusive or insulting words to any official of the Society, or Judge at the Show or in regard to the Society, shall be liable to disqualification. Upon any person being reported to the Committee as having committed an offence under the above rule, the Committee shall hold an inquiry, of which due notice shall be given to such person; who shall have the right to be heard and call evidence at such inquiry and the Committee shall either exonerate such a person or impose such penalty as it deems expedient and the report of such inquiry shall be forwarded to the Secretary of the South Coast Union of Show Societies. Drug testing 1. Drug testing may be carried out at this Show 2. Any competitor, exhibitor or owner found to have breached the ASC Disputes and Disciplinary Regulations will be investigated by the ASC Disciplinary Committee and dealt with accordingly. Supplementary By-Laws 1. All prizes will be paid in the ring after each event. 2. The office-bearers or Committee do not hold themselves responsible for the prizes further than proportionate to the extent of the funds with which they are supplied for that purpose; nor will they indemnify exhibitors for any articles that may be lost, stolen or destroyed during the show. 3. Perpetual Trophies will remain the property of the Society. 4. Any exhibitor who shall make a false report or give misleading information respecting any exhibit, shall not be entitled to any prize whatever. 5. All exhibits must be delivered on the ground and removed therefrom at the owner s risk and expense. 6. In case any dispute may arise as to the construction to be put upon any of the by-laws or regulations, the same will be determined by the Committee of the Society whose decision shall be final. 7. All competitors compete entirely at their own risk. Any person using the jumping equipment and/or arena other than during competition will be debarred from competing in any jumping events during the Show. Any disputes concerning Showjumping must be referred to the Group Secretary in writing through the Area Steward. THE BOWRAL BRANCH of the CWA RICH FRUIT CAKE COMPETITION Our Bowral Branch have kindly donated the Trophy and Prize money of $20 to be awarded to the winner of Class 62 The Exhibit winning this Class is eligible to enter the Group 5 Competition later in 2017, from which the winning entry automatically qualifies to compete in the State Rich Fruit Cake Final At the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2018. Class 62. The State Rich Fruit Cake Competition Compulsory Recipe Ingredients: 250g sultanas ½ tsp ground ginger 1/3 cup sherry/brandy 250g chopped raisins ½ tsp ground cloves 60g self-raising flour 250g currants 250g butter 250g plain flour 125g chopped mixed peel 250g soft brown sugar ½ tsp lemon essence or finely grated lemon rind 90g chopped red glace cherries ½ tsp almond essence ½ tsp vanilla essence 90g chopped blanched almonds 4 large eggs ½ tsp grated nutmeg Method: Mix together all the fruits and nuts. Sprinkle with sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least one hour but preferably overnight. Stir the flours and spices, cream butter and sugar with the essences. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternatively add fruit and flour mixes. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared tin, no larger than 20cm and bake in a slow oven for approx. 3-4 hours. Allow the cake to cool in the tin. Note: To ensure uniformity and depending on size, it is suggested the raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces, cherries into 4 to 6 pieces and almonds crosswise into 3 to 4 pieces.
