A 1987 Williams College graduate and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, Paulsen has worked in every level of college basketball over the last 21 years, has won nearly 64 percent of his games as a head coach, and is considered a highly sought-after consultant on the principles of the motion offense. Prior to his arrival at Bucknell, Paulsen compiled a 17-53 (.762) record at Williams, his alma mater. He led the Ephs to the Division III national championship in 22-3 and a national runner-up finish a year later. Paulsen also spent three seasons as head coach at St. Lawrence, guiding the Saints to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996 and 1997, and three more campaigns at Le Moyne. In 1989-9, Paulsen was a graduate assistant coach on Steve Fisher s staff at Michigan. He was part of a Wolverines team that went 23-8 and went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. From 199-94, he was the senior assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cleveland State, where he helped the Vikings to a 64-5 record, including a 22-6 record (15-1 Mid-Continent Conference) in 1992-93. Known as an offensive innovator, Paulsen has produced four acclaimed instructional videos on the motion offense and has been a featured clinician at more than 5 developmental camps and coaches conventions. Hot Topics Bucknell looks to keep its recent hot streak going when it hosts Colgate on Saturday night at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison come into the game sitting alone in first place in the Patriot League with a 4- record. After a 1-15 start, the Raiders have won two straight, beating Dartmouth on Monday in a non-league game followed by an 8-79 win over defending champion Lehigh on Wednesday. Bucknell is in the midst of its best stretch of basketball in coach Dave Paulsen s three seasons, winning seven straight and 11 of its last 12 games. The Bison went 6-1 in December, then started off 211 on a high note with a 62-61 win at Richmond, followed by the four Patriot League wins over Navy, American, Holy Cross and Lafayette. Of the 11 wins in this current hot streak, six have come on the road, including two against Atlantic 1 programs in Richmond and La Salle. The Bison are in the midst of their best 12-game stretch (11-1) since winning 14 straight games in 26-7. The current seven-game winning streak is also the longest since 26-7. The Bison have been strong offensively since the end of the final exam break in December, averaging 74.5 points while shooting 48.1% from the field, 44.% from the 3-point stripe and 79.2% from the foul line over their last 1 games. Bucknell has three players scoring in double figures and six averaging at least 7.8 points per game over that span, led by Mike Muscala at 17.6 ppg. Muscala has seven 2-point games this season and continues to lead the team in scoring (15.5), rebounding (6.9) and blocked shots (1.6). After producing 56 points, 23 rebounds and eight blocks in two games last week, Muscala was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week, the Patriot League Player of the Week and the Oscar Roberston National Player of the Week. Hot-shooting sophomore Bryson Johnson (1.7) and senior G.W. Boon (1.) are also scoring in double figures, and seven Bison are scoring at least 5.9 points per game. Senior point guard Darryl Shazier is leading the Patriot League in assists (5.6) and again ranks No. 1 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.96). Shazier scored a career-high 28 points in the win over Navy, and last weekend he had a nine-assist, no-turnover game against Holy Cross. Johnson is 31-for-59 (.525) from long range in the last nine games, including a 7-for-12 showing at Boston College and a 5-for-7 effort at Richmond. Johnson leads the league and ranks 1th nationally in 3FG percentage on the season (.47). As a team, Bucknell is leading the Patriot League in field-goal percentage (.453) and 3-point percentage (.45) while ranking a close second to Lafayette in free-throw percentage (.778). Among the national leaders, the Bison are sixth in FT%, 14th in 3FG% and 11th in fewest turnovers per game (11.). Colgate comes in averaging 6.9 ppg while allowing 74.8 ppg. The Raiders top scorer is Yaw Gyawu at 12.7 ppg. Joe Hoban averages 9.1 ppg and Mike Venezia, just back from an injury, checks in at 8.4 ppg. Coach Paulsen is encouraging fans to take part by wearing sneakers to the game. In addition, members of the Bucknell men s basketball team in conjunction with the Bucknell chapter of Colleges Against Cancer have been selling Coaches vs. Cancer tee shirts and wrist bands in the Elaine Langone Center Mall as well as at Sojka Pavilion on Saturday night. In last year s first meeting at Cotterell Court, the Bison rallied from a 13-point deficit to win 62-61 behind 17 points from G.W. Boon and 16 from Mike Muscala, both of whom came off the bench. The Bison trailed 26-13 early, 4-29 at the half and 61-57 with 4:1 to play. But the Bison pitched a shutout over the final 4:1, and a free throw by Bryan Cohen and two buckets by Muscala accounted for the winning points. Bucknell came up with a terrific defensive stand on the final possession to hold on. The rematch at Sojka Pavilion was not nearly as close, as Patrick Behan celebrated his Senior Day with 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bison to the 2-point win. Bucknell led by double digits by the 8:21 mark of the first half, and the Bison held high-scoring guard Kyle Roemer to five points on 1-for-12 shooting. No Colgate player scored more than nine points. patriot league success The Bison are 179-91 (.663) in Patriot League regular-season games, the best record of any league team. They have finished at least.5 in PL play in 16 of 2 seasons. The Bison won a league-record 23 straight contests against conference foes from Feb. 23, 25 to Jan. 12, 27. Bucknell had a streak of 35 straight wins at home against conference opponents come to an end in 28. Bucknell has an all-time record of 24-18 in 2 Patriot League Tournaments. Bucknell has beaten every team in the league at least once in the postseason. The Bison have reached the championship game six times, including wins in 25 and 26, and reached at least the semifinals in 15 of 2 years. More from the Lafayette Game Bucknell took a 34-3 lead into the halftime break, then burst out of the locker room on a 2-3 run to seize control of the game. The Bison held the Leopards to one field goal in the first 7:43 of the half, and six different players scored during the game-changing run. With a large lead for much of the second half, coach Dave Paulsen was able to use his bench for large chunks of the half. No Bucknell player saw more than 3 minutes of action. Mike Muscala played only 2 minutes but just missed his third straight double-double. He finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, going 3-for-6 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the foul line. Bryson Johnson had a key stretch in the first half after the Bison fell behind 8-5. Johnson scored 11 straight Bucknell points in a span of only 1:54 to give them the lead for good. He hit three 3-pointers and a step-back 16-footer to account for the 11 points. Those would be his only four field goals of the night as he finished with 13 points. G.W. Boon had a very strong game off the bench, finishing with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting (2-3 3FG). Darryl Shazier knocked down a season-high three 3-pointers and finished with nine points and three assists. Bucknell held Lafayette to 34.8% shooting in the second half and 37.% for the game. Leading scorer Jared Mintz was held to 1 points more than six below his season average on 3-for-1 shooting. Bucknell and Lafayette entered the game ranked No. 3 and 4, respectively, in the nation in free-throw shooting, but both struggled in this one. The Bison finished 17-for-27 (.63), while Lafayette went 8-for-14 (.571). Most of Bucknell s struggles came from its bench, which went 5-for-12. Bucknell improved to 1- against Lafayette at Sojka Pavilion. Let s Go Streaking Bucknell s current seven-game winning streak is the 12th-longest active streak in the nation (through Thursday). The Bison have had a negative ratio only four times all season, against Marquette, Loyola, Dartmouth and Richmond. Their 11. turnovers per game is the 11th-best mark in Division I basketball. The Bison as a team are shooting 4.5% from long range, up from last season s 32.9% mark. Bucknell ranks 14th nationally in 3-point accuracy. Bucknell s 45.3% field-goal shooting is the best mark in the Patriot League, and the Bison rank No. 1 in the league and No. 6 in the nation in free-throw percentage at 77.8%. While the team s 3-point percentage is up, a lower percentage of Bucknell s total shots have come from beyond the 3-point arc. So far 3.9% of the team s attempts have come from long range, down from 34.7% last year and 35.% in 28-9. Bucknell has recorded an assist on 59.6% of its field goals this season. By comparison, last year the team was credited with an assist on only 51.6% of its baskets. Bucknell has scored 7 or more points in nine of its last 1 games, including five straight from Dec. 17 to Dec. 3. The last time a Bucknell team reached 7 in five consecutive games was all the way back in 1997-98, when it happened six straight times. The Bison have scored 7+ points 13 times so far, their most since doing it 13 times in 2-1. NCAA Leaders, 3-Point Field Goal Percentage Team 3FG 3FGA 3FG% 1. Northern Arizona 114 256.445 2. On Tuesday he became the first Bucknell player ever to win the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week Award from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Muscala was the second straight Patriot League player to win it, following American s Vlad Moldoveanu. Other previous winners this season include BYU s Jimmer Fredette, Texas A&M s Khris Middleton, Kentucky s Doron Lamb and Illinois Demetri McCamey. Muscala on Monday was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time in his career, as well as the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week. Muscala Hosts a Block Party Sophomore Mike Muscala set a Bucknell rookie record with 65 blocked shots last season, becoming the first Bucknell player ever to win a Patriot League blocks title. Muscala became only the second player in school history to produce at least 3 points, 1 rebounds and five blocked shots in a game. The other was Hall of Famer Mike Butts, who recorded 36 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks in an overtime win over Duquesne in 1987-88. Should We Call them G.Joe Boonman or Joe W. Willmoon? Regardless of the moniker, Bucknell has a very effective platoon going at the power forward position between sophomore Joe Willman and senior G.W. Boon. Willman starts at the 4 spot with Boon coming in off the bench. The 6 7 Willman and the 6 4 Boon have different style games, but both have been effective. Combined, Boon and Willman are averaging 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Together they are shooting 45.2% from the field and 84.5% from the foul line. Dishing out some Revenge There were eight non-league opponents that defeated Bucknell last season and which also appeared on this year s schedule. Amazingly, Bucknell avenged the loss on all eight occasions. The trend continued into Patriot League play. The latter figure ranks No. 1 nationally among all players averaging at least 3. assists per game. In his last 18 games, Shazier has 14 assists and only 22 turnovers. He had recorded five or more assists in 11 straight games until finishing with just one in limited minutes in the Dec. 3 rout of Dartmouth. Shazier had a stellar 118-to-5 assist-to-turnover ratio last season. Among the Patriot League leaders he ranked third in assists and second in assist-to-turnover ratio. As a sophomore in 28-9, Shazier became the first Bucknell player to win a Patriot League assists title. Shazier averaged 4.6 assists per game that season and had six or more assists 13 times. He also led the Patriot League in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6). Shazier now ranks fourth on Bucknell s career assists chart, and in the Richmond game he became the fourth player in school history to reach 4 helpers. He also ranks 11th on the Patriot League all-time assists leaderboard. Shazier has committed only 13 second-half turnovers all season. Assists in a Career, Bucknell History 1. Tyree Playing on Torn ACL For the second time in the last three years, Bucknell cocaptain Stephen Tyree suffered an ACL injury in his left knee during preseason workouts. Prior to his junior year in 28-9, Tyree was injured and missed the entire season. Tyree returned to the lineup last season and started every game. He averaged 26.4 minutes per game, led the team in rebounding (5.2) as a 6 3 guard, shot 48.2% from the field and scored 5.7 points per game. After the season he was given the team s Malcom E. Musser Award for leadership. In 21-11, Tyree returned to Bucknell as a graduate student to use his NCAA-approved fifth year of eligibility. He was elected co-captain for the second year in a row and once again figured heavily to the team s plans. But he re-injured his knee in practice on Nov. 2. PL PRESEASON POLL 1. Tyree elected not to undergo surgery and worked hard rehabbing the knee in order to get back on the floor. After returning to practice on Dec. 19 he made his season debut one night later at Cornell. Tyree checked in for the first time at the 18:24 mark of the second half, and Bucknell proceeded to outscore the Big Red 1- in the next four minutes before he left the game. He had an assist and a defensive rebound in that span. Tyree experienced some soreness after the Cornell game and did not play again until last Sunday s win over Holy Cross. Against the Crusaders, he played the final five minutes and had a layup and a key offensive rebound in Bucknell s two-point win. Defense the key Defense has been the X factor for Bucknell so far in 21-11. In Bucknell s 13 wins, it is allowing just 59.4 points per game, while opponents are shooting 37.9% from the field and 31.1% from the 3-point arc. In the seven losses, opponents are scoring 74.3 points per game and shooting 48.% from the field, 41.4% from the arc. Boon Promoted to Captain During the final exam break, Bucknell head coach Dave Paulsen announced that senior G.W. Boon has been designated a team co-captain, where he joins classmate Darryl Shazier and graduate student Stephen Tyree. Boon, a biomedical engineering major, is Bucknell s thirdleading scorer at 1. points per game. bucknell last season In 29-1 the Bison won four of their first seven games, but then really struggled in December and the early part of January. They lost six straight and nine out of 1 in one stretch, but then Bucknell got hot in Patriot League play. A terrific 7-1 stretch led to a 9-5 league finish, good for second place in the regular-season standings. But then the season ended on a disappointing note, as No. 7 seed Holy Cross upset Bucknell 67-64 in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament. The Bison finished 14-17 overall. MUSCALA Named to Preseason All-Patriot League Team, Bison Picked No. 2 Sophomore center Mike Muscala was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, while Bucknell was picked to finish second in the preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors. Last season Muscala was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection and a Patriot League All-Rookie Team pick. He is one of only four freshmen in league history to make one of the all-league teams. The preseason poll was the closest in league history, with the top five teams all receiving multiple first-place votes, and only 1 points separating the top five. American was picked first with 79 points, while Bucknell was a close second with 76. From Way Downtown Guard Bryson Johnson set a Bucknell freshman record with 67 3-pointers last season. That is tied for seventh-most in a season at Bucknell. Still a sophomore, Johnson already ranks in the top 1 on Bucknell s career 3FG list. Cohen is the third Bucknell player to win the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honor in the five-year history of the award, joining teammate Stephen Tyree in 28 and Abe Badmus in 25. Bison Have Plenty of Experience Back The Stephen Tyree injury not withstanding, Bucknell has plenty of experience returning in 21-11. Including Tyree, the Bison return their top three and nine of their top 1 scorers from a year ago. The Bison return 86.4% of their scoring, 86.8% of their rebounding, 94.1% of their assists and 89.1% of their minutes played from last season. The only regular not returning from last season is forward Patrick Behan, who played in 3 games, starting 21, and averaged 9. points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Behan finished the year coming off the bench, meaning Bucknell this season returns all five starters from its 29-1 stretch drive. Who s New? Bucknell has four newcomers to the roster in 21-11, three of whom are eligible to play this season: Guard Cameron Ayers comes in after a stellar career at Germantown Academy. Last year he averaged 22.9 ppg, was an Associated Press All-State honoree and earned Inter-Ac MVP honors for the second year in a row. Ben Brackney is a sharp-shooting guard from Lincoln, Ill. At Lincoln High School he was a Class 3A Second Team All-State selection and the Lincoln Courier Co-Player of the Year last season. Point guard Ryan Hill is another in-state recruit from Steelton-Highspire High School near Harrisburg. He was a 1,-point scorer in high school, averaging 16.3 ppg as a senior. Forward Brian Fitzpatrick has transferred to Bucknell after playing one season at Penn. As a freshman last season he played in 17 games off the bench for the Quakers and averaged 2.4 ppg and 1.5 rpg. Fitzpatrick must sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules.
