THE FLANKER 14 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LILYDALE FOOTBALL CLUB INC TELEPHONE: 9735 0270 President: Anthony Simmons 0439 369 919 Secretary: Vicki Hottes 0400 364 898 Editor Flanker: Gerry Toohey 0414 257 276 Congratulations to Stephen McDonald who plays his 300 th game for Lilydale against South Croydon this week. Issue 12 19th July 2014

President s Page What an achievement! What can I say? A fantastic effort by a fantastic bloke and one that will be very hard to be. Congratulations to Stephen McDonald for reaching 300 games for the Lilydale Football Club this week in his 17 th season with the Seniors. Do the Anthony Simmons maths and you will realise how few games he has missed. Well our footy on the wall. weekend was pretty much like the weather bleak and cold! In the trying conditions we wasted opportunities in the first quarter kicking no goals and seven points. Blackburn on the other hand couldn t seem to miss. The Reserves and Under 19s did not fare much better. Enough said. Thanks to our coterie group The Falconians for the delicious lunch put on for the U19 players and their parents, and a bigger thank you to those parents who made the effort to be there with their kids and support. On the Junior front, only one more round of the season to go. The final round on the 20th of July is the last awards night AND also the drawing of the car raffle. Last chances to get a ticket to win a new Mitsubishi Lancer!! Many of our Junior teams will be taking part in finals this season, so to all Senior players and supporters, please make an effort to get along and support the future of our club in their attempts to bring home flags. Remember UNITY IS STRENGTH and these kids will hopefully continue on to represent the senior club. Sponsor of the Week this week is The Olinda Creek Hotel. Located in the Main Street right next the senior ground, The Olinda Creek Hotel has been a great supporter of the club for many years. Their Bistro is open all day on match days, so if you re looking for a bite to eat before or after the game, pop in and see Vicki and her friendly staff! Or stop in during the week and check out the daily specials. Don t forget to let them know you re from Lilydale Football Club so they know we re returning their support! And you can get 10% of your meal upon presentation of your LFC membership ticket! Junior President s Report One round to go! Only one round to go!!! At this stage we will have 6 possibly 7 teams competing in the finals this season. The under 14s,and 17 Peter Koger Premier and 17 C are guaranteed finishing on top of the ladder and therefore they are awarded with the first week off to rest up and get ready for the second week of the finals. The under 12s,13s and fingers crossed 15 A teams should all compete the first week of the finals. The Lilydale Junior Football Club has been awarded the opportunity to host the first two weeks of the finals this year. I will be compiling a roster early next week and requesting assistance from all junior parents and Under 17s that are available to help out with manning the gate, security and bbq. Our last awards night and car Raffle is going to be drawn this Sunday night at the Senior Club rooms. If you haven t returned you ticket stubs and money can you please return them to your team managers at training prior to Sunday so the tickets can be included in the draw and tickets will be on sale right up to the draw on Sunday. The car and tickets will also be at the senior game Saturday and the Gateway on Sunday. On a sad note I have to inform everyone that some inconsiderate moron drove onto the Senior back oval on Sunday night/monday morning and did burnouts on our training ground that is very precious to us and is used by not only the whole junior club but also the seniors on a daily basis. The ground have been therefore damaged to an extent where only half will be available for training in the foreseeable future and it is very frustrating that an idiot would criminally damage our precious area in this manner. I will be investigating the matter and I am requesting anyone with any information to the identity of this person that committed this offence to call me. I will also be request CCTV footage and witnesses to assist. Good Luck to all our teams this week and I hope to see you all at the car raffle draw Sunday night. Regards Peter Koger Page 6

Norwood played a tough and good brand of football. I am taking nothing away from you boys who played good as well but I thought they wanted the tough ball a bit more than us and it is something we really need to work on. Keep up the hard training. A great percentage boost however with straighter kicking could have been more. The win has put us 1 game clear in fifth spot. With two rounds to go we need to stay focussed and force our way into the finals. All need to get to training this week as Gary Ayres says train to win. Page 9

Playing top teams means you must play at your best and in the first 3 quarters we were far from that!! We did come out in the last quarter and put up a fight and held them to 4 points by taking some aggression and hunger out on the field which was pleasing we didn t drop our heads completely. When we play as a team and help each other and do the hard things for each other, we play well and push the top teams but when we stand back and don t chase and play reactive football we get beaten badly. Unfortunately the gap between our best and our worst is huge. Now we need to go out with the aggression and hunger that we had in the last quarter and from the week before and we can end the year winners so boys it s up to you bring you re A game! 300 GAMES This week Stephen McDonald plays his 300th senior game for the Lilydale Football Club against South Croydon. Stephen holds the club record for the most games which he achieved on 19 th July 2013 exactly 12 months ago also against South Croydon and also in front of his home crowd when he broke Warren Cruse s record of 281 games recorded in the 2009 season. He will now be eligible for life membership of the EFL. Macca has played his whole football career with the Lilydale Football Club. He commenced playing in the midgets or Under 10s at age 9 way back in 1988 and finished his junior career in 1984 in the Under 16s when the team were runners up under the coaching of Gerry Toohey. He has played throughout his career with great mates including Sean Toohey, Lucas Skelton, Chris Goodlet, Garret Dobson and Jamie Cruickshank. Jamie will play in the same side with Macca this week as he achieves the 300 game milestone. He played in the Under 18s in 1995-96 finishing fourth in the best and fairest in 1996 with 28 votes winning the most determined award. He then graduated to the seniors in 1997 playing 17 games. He is of course the only Lilydale player to achieve the milestone. We wonder how many more games he will add. Except for a break during 2001 when he travelled overseas, Macca has not missed a season playing with the Falcons. He has since clocked up another 282 senior games to put him on the threshold of his 300 th game with the Falcons. Macca has won many accolades and achieved many milestones along the way. When he was in the Under 16s he played with the Carlton Football Club along with Sean Toohey. Macca played his 150 th game in 2006 when great mates Jamie Cruickshank and Lucas Skelton also played their 150 th senior games with the club. He completed the Kokoda Trail trek with 14 other Lilydale Football Club stalwarts in October 2007 including Sean, Jamie and Lucas. He has earned such prestigious awards such as the best team man and most disciplined on several occasions throughout his illustrious playing career at the Lilydale Football Club. Stephen played his 200 th game in 2008 and his 250 th game in Round 15 of the 2011 season during which he also celebrated one of three premierships he has achieved with the Dales the others being in 1998 and 2003. In 2008 he was also awarded life membership for playing his 200 th senior game. From a personal perspective Stephen reckons the person who has influenced his career the most is his mother who took him to the football all through those junior years and still comes to watch him play now. The best footballer he has played with is Peter Skewes for the courage he displayed on the football field. He has stayed with Lilydale because you get to play footy with great blokes and the majority of Lilydale recruits are mates of current players who come to play for the right reasons not just for the money. The President, Committee, sponsors and supporters of the Lilydale Football Club salute Stephen McDonald and congratulate him on playing 300 senior games with the Falcons. Macca has been a real monument to the game and a true blue and gold player who epitomises what loyalty and sportsmanship are all about. This is a most deserving and popular milestone set by one of the true gentlemen of the game. Well done Macca. Page 21
