PRESIDENTS REPORT This month I am very pleased to report that our club is up-to-date with our responsibilities to Consumer Affairs Victoria. Thanks to some good detective work by our Treasurer Geoff Boyd, we have now successfully lodged overdue financial statements for 2012, 2015 and 2016. The statement for 2017 is already complete and will be presented to our AGM for ratification and then submission. We have brought up-to-date records as to our current Secretary. We have been successful in the lodgement of our new Rules which were passed by the club at the Special General Meeting on 9 June. This means that the Committee election to be held at the AGM on 25 August 2017 will be held according to these New Rules. Accordingly, 6 committee members will remain until the next election. These are Chris Hall, Noel Peers, Barney Haddon, Wayne Holness, Arron Secombe and Darren Wythe. Four members of the committee tendered their resignations to take effect from the AGM. These are Keith McElroy, Geoff Boyd, Garry Harrowfield and Les Noonan. Two committee members, Michele Bayley and Ben McKee, by way of a ballot, were added to these four names in order to make up the required 6 committee members to finish their term at the AGM. These 2 highly valued committee members are eligible for re-election. I hope that we again have a significant number of members put themselves forward for consideration to become part of the six-member group to be added to our Committee. Thank you to Paul Gladman for directing an exceptional well run and well received Motorkhana on 25 th June, with 8 well-chosen tests instead of the usual 6. As a result of this event and previous efforts Paul is now the proud possessor of a CAMS Bronze Event Command qualification. It is with a degree of frustration that I offer sincere apologies of the club for the postponement of the Khanacross and Motorkhana from July 23 to the reserve date of August 27. This is the situation which I had hoped we could avoid and I sincerely trust will not recur. Again, my apologies. The Sports Sub-Committee and the club Committee have committed BLCC to promoting the Eureka rally in 2018 as a round of the ARC. We again look forward to your support of this venture which will bring considerable prestige to the club and we anticipate a financial profit. We are also well underway with preparations for promoting the motoring side of the Maryborough Wings and Wheels Festival, brought to the club s attention by Dave Stewart. Arron Secombe is taking the lead with this venture and your offers of support for him will do much to make the event successful for the Club. We now hold a CAMS track licence for the Maryborough Airport, which opens the way for a range of future events at this venue. I would like to thank Club members who came out on a very cold night to support our annual quiz event. I think most people enjoyed themselves, but I am wondering if my questions in particular have become too easy. Big George s team scored 14/15 on my final round to snatch a come-from-behind victory. Our current Ballarat City Council appears to have lost almost all momentum in the search for a new motorsport home for ourselves and the Drag club. We are now forced to consider alternative options of going it alone or in conjunction with other groups. It is thus very timely that Ken Marriott, a very experienced consultant in all manner of sporting facilities and in particular for several motorsport proposals in other places as well as for the Ballarat City, is investigating the possibility of various motorsport bodies combining in Victoria to create a multipurpose complex. We should listen to him with a great deal of care at our coming monthly meeting, ask lots of questions and demonstrate by our interest that this region is the ideal location for such a venture. See you all at the meeting on Friday night. Keith McElroy President The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin July 2017 5
EDITORIAL REPORT It s been quiet, too quiet With a blank calendar in July for those of us who don t rallycross, I m looking forward to getting back out to the Complex to get some more track time in this year. I missed the last event that the BLCC held and Michele Bayley was kind enough to take over the photographic duties for the day, her pictures are featured in the Motorkhana article, she has a wonderful way of capturing the human side of our events, which is easy to forget when I m out there just looking for good shots of cars going sideways for the front cover. Meanwhile, the club s track Grader is nearing completion, with Barney Haddon and Wayne Sanders putting hours into rebuilding the engine of the old beast while Paul Shaw and Wayne Holness have been helping out with track maintenance. While we haven t had many events on lately, it s still all go here and it s going to stay that way for a while! Andrew. MEMBER REPORT John Crawford Strech: An unusual farewell Your help is requested. Sometimes the Car Club is the only family we have. This is obviously the case with John Strech. John was a keen rally driver and member of the Ballarat Branch of the Light Car Club of Australia. John was born on 6 th May 1927 and was killed in a road traffic collision on 7 th August 1977. He had no immediate family and his ashes have lain unclaimed at FW Barnes and Son for the last 41 years! A friend of his, Ian Jetsom, has discovered this fact, and traced a relative in WA who has authorised the release of his ashes. Ian is organising a convoy from FW Barnes and Son at 9:30 am Wed 2 nd of August to Naringal Homestead (about 6Km South of Cape Clear). Here his ashes will be scattered at a private cemetery where his mother and father lie. Our role, as his only family, is to get a group of H plated or interesting other cars to be part of the convoy. Refreshments will be available after the trip. This is a good thing to do. For the purposes of organisation and catering numbers, please let Ian Jetsom know you can take part. Please contact him as follows: 0417 374 187 or jetsom101010@gmail.com Thank you for this act of kindness and respect Membership Renewals A friendly reminder that memberships were due at the end of June. Renewal forms have been posted. Membership cards will not be issued without a renewal form being returned in person or emailed to the membership secretary: Michele Bayley mbbayley@bigpond.com 1934 Standard 16 Pictured below is one of the latest cars to join the BLCC club plate scheme. The picture landed on the editor s desk just after the last meeting and I thought it worthy of a small article. The 16 originally came from the Standard Motor Company with a 2.1 Litre Side-Valve Inline Six that was taxed at 16hp, hence the name Standard 16 The car shown however is rumoured to be running a Holden 202 Inline Six that should produce around 150hp. Of course most, if not all of you, would recognize this car as being the real star of the Doctor Blake Mysteries on the ABC. The car was recently on display at the Doctor Blake exhibit at the Gold Museum at Sovereign Hill, admission to the exhibit is $40 and features items from the show. IMPORTANT - WORKING WITH CHILDREN The Victorian State Government has made amendments to the Working with Children Check Act 2005 that will come into effect on 1 August, 2017. These changes will now require ALL Victorian Officials to obtain a Working with Children Check as part of their licence. These amendments are being made following a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Information regarding the changes can be found here: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/about+the+check/purpose/changes+to+legislation/ For those officials who already hold a valid check, details will need to be emailed to workingwithchildren@cams.com.au The email should include: - Your full name; - CAMS licence number; - Working with Children Check number/reference; - Working with Children Check expiry date; - a scanned copy/photograph of the card. For those that don t currently have a check, one can be obtained free of charge from the following link: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/applications/apply+for+a+check/apply+in+victoria To begin the application, hit the blue start application box at the bottom of the page. Once the online application is complete, you will need to visit an Australia Post outlet to verify your identity free of charge. Once you receive approval, please email the same details as above to workingwithchildren@cams.com.au These checks are compulsory for Victorian Officials and need to be applied for by August 1. Any official who is yet to provide their details by this date will be ineligible to participate in CAMS permitted events until they do so. Presently Victoria is the only state expanding their definition of 'direct contact' and removing references to 'Supervision', however CAMS anticipate that these amendments will be adopted by other State Governments over the next 12 months. CAMS recommends officials in other States be pro-active and obtain a check. To ALL existing and intending BLCC officials. We must all complete this simple requirement by the end of July, irrespective of when your official licence expires. Otherwise, come August 1 we will not be able to run our events, because our officials will have licences automatically suspended until the Working with Children check is added. We will have our permit applications knocked back if the officials named are not in compliance. This not a BLCC decision. This is not a CAMS decision. This is State Government requirement for all sports clubs and associations. The process is easy and quick, The process is free. Thank you for attending to this. GUEST SPEAKER - AARON NOONAN Aaron Noonan has been a mainstay of the modern day Australian motorsport scene since his early days with Australian Motorsport News, he continued up the ranks and was the PR manager of the Carrera Cup and Holden Motorsports, which included HRT and Kmart racing at the time. After his PR career, Aaron then became a commentator for the V8 Supercars, becoming the public face of statistics on the broadcast. Working with Channel Seven gave him access to the Seven archives, leading to the Magic Moments of Motorsport DVD range which features whole Bathursts not seen since the day they aired. At the same time, Aaron worked on Seven s Legends of Motorsports series, working as a co-host and introducing segments that featured video that had been sourced from the Seven archives. Currently, Aaron operates V8 Sleuth, a database that tracks around 400 V8 Supercars and also keeps tabs on Group C, A and Super Touring cars. He has also worked with Fox Sport, SPEED and also operates AN1 Data Service which provides statistical services to motorsport, continuing the trends of tracking history he had started during his commentary career and continues to this day with V8 Sleuth. MITTA MITTA REPORT On Saturday May the 6 th, round 2 of the Focus on Furniture and Bedding Victorian Rally Championship, was held in the township of Mitta Mitta. BLCC was well represented with Kate Meyer co-driving for Lindsey Wright in the Subaru WRX, Ross Stapleton /Peter Ellis in the Nissan 200 SX, Arron Secombe/Gavin Porthouse V8 Commodore and Conner McLeod with Paul Lahiff in the Toyota Altezza. Also Sean Payne/Arron Windus completing zero car duties. Mitta Mountain Rally is well known for its tight twisting up and downhill stages. Stage 1-2 were exactly that, with lots of hair pin turns as we made our way around the mountains of Mitta and surrounds. Stage 3 was a granite sand shire road stage, which seen both Rally leaders Stephen Raymond/Luke Simpson rolling their Subaru WRX, finishing up on a fence post and also Warren Lee/David Lethlean running out of road and ditching the EVO into a drain ending their day also. This stage also nearly ended our day with the Commodore wanting to a kiss a tree (which was as round as the Commodore) head on at 140kmph. Not sure how we got out of it, but it s the fastest I have seen Gav tuck his ankles behind his ears. Stage 4 was a driver s stage with a bit of everything thrown in, after this stage was service. By this stage Sean had welded the panhard rod mount on Kermit twice. Our Commodore had 8mm play both sides from worn out rose joints. Stapleton/Ellis where having a great run and Meyer/Wright were heading for and outright in the WRX. Stage 5 was 52km of pure hell for Payne/Windus with the panhard rod breaking again, Secombe/Porthouse nursing the front end through the stage (didn t really want to load the Commodore on the trailer in the stage) Wright/Meyer were 4 th fastest with Stapleton/Ellis 13 th. To finish Mitta is a result in itself, the end results for the BLCC Crews Lindsey Wright/Kate Meyer 4 th Outright and 3 rd in Class, Ross Stapleton/Peter Ellis 13 th outright and 2 nd in class and Arron Secombe/Gavin Porthouse 27 th outright and 5 th in class. MK RD 3 On the 25 of June 2017 the Cec Jackson Motorkhana Series was held. A big thanks to all that helped on the day. Thanks to Ben McKee, Rob Prosser, Michele Bayley, Wayne Holness, Gerard Gray, Darren Clayton and Bernie Gladman for the Milo balls. 8 tests were run on the day, 6 on the old bomber strip, 2 on grass. Well done to Sam Cassar for getting the fastest time on test 8 for a junior. Well done to Keith McElroy 1 st outright, Mick Gossens 2 nd Outright and Darren Watkins 3 rd outright. It was a cold and windy day and we had good feedback for running 8 tests by all. A special thanks to Keith McElroy for mentoring and assessing me on the day. Thanks, Paul Gladman. I ve been informed by my photographer Michele to make a special note of the passenger in Greg Cray s Astra. Young Coby Cray was excited to be riding with his dad throughout the day. ARARAT HILLCLIMB A few photos from the Saturday of the Ararat Hillclimb, Round 7 of the Victorian Hillclimb Championship. With an additional display of Police cars and 48-215/FJ Holdens, the Saturday portion ran smoothly with Kevin Mackrell heading into the 40 second range on his first run up the hill. Sunday was a tad more exciting, with a rollover halting proceedings for a while but no-one was seriously injured. Results should be in the next Bulletin. A phrase our Gavin Porthouse lives by!
