Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Take A Selfie after the filly refused to be loaded into the barrier at 6.01pm. All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded. Little Bita Sass Slow to begin and was then bumped by Zafeera, which shifted in. Zafeera Commenced awkwardly. Bettys Thrills Got its head up when being restrained from its wide gate at the start. Nova Rocha Raced keenly in the early and middle stages getting its head up on several occasions. App Regan Bayliss was reprimanded for using his whip on six occasions prior to the 100 metres. Further, R Bayliss was severely reprimanded for using his whip on consecutive strides.
Love In The City When asked about the somewhat improved performance of the filly, trainer Robbie Griffiths explained that Love In The City had two starts in its first preparation before being spelled and at its first run back this preparation at Mornington (30/10/16), was found to be lame in the off hind hip after making contact with the barriers when the start was effected. He added that the stable was expecting a more forward showing today. Race 2 STAR NEWS GROUP F&M MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres: Selfish Miss Ducked its head as the start was effected and as a result lost ground. Magic Springs (NZ) Got its head up on jumping away. Miss Mumazara Slow to begin. Sunita Commenced awkwardly. Falika (NZ) Became unbalanced shortly after the start when bumped outwards by Stryking Miss. As a result Falika (NZ) made contact with Bellaria (NZ). Bellaria (NZ) Bumped by Falika (NZ) shortly after the start. Dame Largo Lay out under pressure in the straight and over the concluding stages was hampered slightly by Stryking Miss, which shifted in slightly. J Mott explained that shortly after leaving the gate, when in the lead, the mare got its head up and commenced to shift ground obliging him to stop riding and straighten his mount. As a consequence Dame Largo lost its position. Race 3 NINE MILE FRESH BM70 HANDICAP - 2000 metres: My Naughty Hoaks Knuckled on jumping. Rider Jackie Beriman could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the mare. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Shawn Mathrick regarding My Naughty Hoaks. Lilly Dazzler Commenced awkwardly and lost ground. Passing the 1300 metres, when the pace slackened, steadied out to avoid the heels of Palmera Lad, which in turn was steadied out to avoid the heels of Kapset. Trainer Monica Croston reported the mare will now be spelled. Thunder Connection (NZ) Bumped out onto McNulty by Zenithal, which shifted out at the start. Rider Michelle Payne was reprimanded for using her whip on eight occasions prior to the 100 metres. Kapset Jumped out at the start making contact with the side of its barrier partition. Near the 1800 metres got its head up when being restrained to avoid the heels of Mr Pago (app Jack Martin), which shifted in before being straightened. App J Martin was advised to show greater caution in similar circumstances. When the pace slackened passing the 1300 metres got its head up when racing keenly and was then allowed to stride to obtain a position outside the leader.
Mr Pago App Jack Martin reported the gelding raced like a tired horse and may have come to end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Peter Gelagotis regarding Mr Pago in the ensuing days. Zenithal - Rider Thomas Sadler reported that it was his intention to have the gelding in a more forward position, however, after beginning awkwardly and when it was clear he could not comply with his instructions, he raced in a mid-field position with cover. McNulty Rider Jade Darose explained that over a longer distance the gelding normally races in a more forward position and from the wide gate tonight after beginning well took up the lead in the early stages. Race 4 BATTERY ZONE MAIDEN PLATE - 2500 metres: Our Boy Billy Jumped out at the start making heavy contact with Final Approval and as a result became unbalanced, shifting back in abruptly shortly after. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight. Final Approval Bumped heavily at the start. Race 5 RACING.COM BM70 HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Cordoba Slow to begin. App Ben Thompson reported he settled in a rearward position as usual and travelled well throughout, however, when asked for an effort in the straight his mount failed to respond. He added that Cordobas previous start which was on a heavy track may have taken the edge off the gelding. Trainer Damien Williams explained that the gelding had worked well in the lead up to tonights event and he was expecting it to perform accordingly. He added that he was disappointed with the horses performance and would have the gelding undergo a veterinary examination in the ensuing days and notify Stewards of anything that comes to light. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. San Amaro Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight until obtaining a run to the outside of Canelo passing the 200 metres. Over the concluding stages was inconvenienced when contacted by Canelo, which after initially shifting out and away from Little Bita Spunk, was tightened by that horse, which shifted under pressure. Stride Out Near the 300 metres when attempting a run to the outside of Az Given (NZ) made contact with Black Chevalier for a short distance when that horse rolled in slightly. Rider Brian Werner reported the gelding travelled well and he had some difficulty obtaining a clear run at the 200 metres, however, overall he felt the performance was disappointing. Jake Noonan (Little Bita Spunk) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a) in that over the concluding stages he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Canelo, obliging rider Thomas Sadler to take hold of the gelding. As no other apprentice was available and after consultation with trainer Nevin Eades, J Grobb was permitted to ride the gelding.
