Homework 2 nd sec Reading 1 You are going to read an article about a dance phenomenon. For questions 1-15 choose the paragraph (A-E). The paragraphs may be chosen more than once. [15 points] A Breakdancing, breaking, B-boying, different names can be used for this style of dance which is always tightly linked to the hip hop and rap music scene, at least it is today. However this wasn t always the case. The dance form has existed since the 60s. In fact James Brown, is not only known as the godfather of soul, but also the godfather of breakdance. James Brown, the popular black soul artist of the 60s and 70s was wellknown for his energetic and often acrobatic dance moves, and his smash hit Get on the Good Foot along with his accompanying dance moves, sparked a new phase of dancing known as Good Foot and later B-boy, which in time became breakdancing. B The Good Foot was the beginning of a phenomenon which has lasted for four decades and doesn t look like it is going to stop. It was a very fast moving style of dance with lots of complicated and innovative leg work however it didn t involve the more daring acrobatics which were later introduced. This didn t mean it was a less difficult dance, in fact in many ways it was much more complex and varied. It s now known as old-style breaking but it did mark the beginning of dance wars which still continue today. Breaking is well-suited to competition and in Harlem New York, people would gather to compete in dance battles to become the best. C The South Bronx was gang land, and slowly breaking began to be a way to replace fighting with knives and guns. Organized dance crews began to form and dancing became 1

a way to settle differences between rival gangs. This was greatly encouraged by Afrika Bambaata the legendary DJ and music producer. He saw the potential of Breakdancing and encouraged it by forming one of the first crews; the Zulu Kings. He encouraged crews to practice and use breaking as a focus for making something of themselves. Bambaata also began to develop new styles of music that suited the dance and the hip hop era began. D The old-style continued until 77 when the style began to evolve. With the song Le Freak came a new dance crew; the Rock Steady Crew. They were a very talented group of b-boys and developed a new more acrobatic style bringing to the form the headspins, backspins and windmills that can still be seen today. The Rock Steady Crew began performing in clubs all over New York, including punk rock clubs. Breaking all of a sudden moved from an underground dance form to something more commercial. By the mid-80s breakdancing had become a major media phenomenon and everybody wanted to try it. This led to a series of films based on the dance style. E Today breaking is once again extremely popular and like in the 80s it s quite common to see dance crews performing in the streets. However the dance style is quite different. Whereas in the past style was a more important aspect of the dance, now, much of breaking is about power and some would say that it s no longer a question of strength and agility but laws of physics. It s also less about music and dance but more about keeping fit and the links to martial arts such as the Brazilian Capoeira are plain to see. Nevertheless it is and will always be an activity that requires flexibility and, physics or not, more than average strength. And it is always great fun to watch. Which paragraph(s): refer to the origins of break dancing? mention chart topping music? describe(s) how dancing reduced violence? a legendary singer? refer(s) to important changes in break dancing? summarizes the original break dance style? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 2

mention(s) a character who helped make breaking popular? refers to breaking in the cinema? 9 10 explain where you might have seen breaking in the last twenty years? 11 12 13 state(s) the kind of people suited to break dancing? 14 tells when dangerous acrobatics became part of break dancing? 15 Grammar and vocabulary 2 Read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.
