2010! Issue 7 ROCKY MOUNTAIN SENIORS SKI CLUB! NOVEMBER 1, 2010 SKI TRACKS PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This issue generously sponsored by Sundance Ski Shop Snow!! At the time I write this, Edmonton is experiencing the first snowfall of the season. Not that it will stay there are still warm temperatures in the 7- day forecast (and I haven t got my snow tires on yet), but it sure helps to boost the anticipation for the upcoming ski season. Snow Valley expects to open in mid-november and Marmot has set an opening date of November 11. It won t be long now! The Club held 2 well attended social events over the past month. Over 80 people enjoyed the bike lunch on October 6, marking the official end of our biking season. And the lodge at Snow Valley was packed with members, both old and new, at our Registration Day on October 20. It was great to see such wonderful representation at both events. If you were not able to make it to the Registration Day, you can still pick up the tour forms at the Fall Banquet on November 24 or download them from our website. Details about the Fall Banquet can be found in this newsletter. It will not only be a great meal and another opportunity to get together with old friends, and meet new ones, but it will also have displays from ski shops, Club tour and on-hill program information and much more. Hope to see you there. Mike Tansey Are you ready for this? What s Coming Up? Marmot Opening November 11 Welcome To Winter +New Members Day November 26 Fall Banquet November 24 Sunshine Tour #1 December 5 to 8 Alberta 55+ Winter Games Volunteers The 2011 Alberta 55+ Winter Games will be hosted by St. Albert February 24 to 27. All of the events with the exception of Alpine Skiing will be held in St. Albert. The Alpine Skiing, consisting of a slalom race and a giant slalom race, will be run at Snow Valley on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26. Ilene Larson and I are co-chairs for the Alpine Skiing Event and our Club has offered to supply volunteers needed to help with the running of the races. The course set up and timing will be handled by Snow Valley and our members will be responsible for registration, crowd control, recording results and other logistical tasks. The races do not conflict with any of our planned Club ski trips. Ilene and I have started to take names of members wishing to volunteer but we still need more people. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact Ilene at 780-435-6537 or myself at 780-458-0293. We will also have a table set up at the Fall Banquet on November 24. The qualifying races for the games will also be held at Snow Valley on Tuesday, December 14. If you are interested in participating please contact Bruce Foy at 780-436-7142 or Len Stevens at 780-481-4791 for more information. Our Club will also be supplying volunteers to assist in the staging those races. If you can help on that date, call either Ilene or myself or see us at the Fall Banquet. Klaus Kyritz National Park Passes The Rocky Mountain Seniors Ski Club has now found a system which allows our Club members who own National Parks Passes to make use of them on bus tours. This season none of our packages include National Park Fees. The October 1 version of the package for Sunshine included the National Park Pass. Rate adjustments will be made for those who have made reservations for the December Sunshine Tour before the revisions were made. Package Cost for Sunshine December 5 to 8 Tour (Revised) Room Type Tour Package Cost per Person Single Double Superior Lodge Room $705 $486 Included in Tour Package: a 3-day lift pass, bus transportation, one Club dinner, all taxes and fees except National Park Pass. Participants wishing to use their own National Parks Pass must bring it with them. Those without passes are asked to bring a cheque, written to RMSSC, to pay the park fee ($21.15 for those 65+ or $24.90 for those under 65). Family passes will cover only the owners of the pass. Membership Update Welcome to Winter, New Members Day Put away your bikes and golf clubs. Get out your skis. Winter is coming! Our Club invites all members to Welcome to Winter and New Members Day at Snow Valley on the second Tuesday after Snow Valley opens from 9 am to 12 noon. The date and activities for the day will be confirmed by email or phone. Come out, check out your equipment, welcome new members to the Club, visit with old friends and participate in the activities. Demo new skis at no charge from the Snow Rider Ski Shop. Get a personal ski tip from a ski instructor. Test your bindings. See the selection of skis, helmets, and goggles at the Snow Rider Ski Shop. Information about ski tours this season as well as on-hill programs at Snow Valley will be available. Lifts open at 9:30 am. Tuesdays at Snow Valley At Snow Valley, the snow is always great and the runs are freshly groomed in the morning just before the lifts open. Club skiing is on Tuesdays although you will see members skiing every day. Some members prefer to come early in the morning and ski the untracked groomed slopes before the school groups get out on the hill. The sun is on the hill in the morning and the school groups are in lessons. Others prefer to come in the afternoon as the school groups are finishing their day. Whenever you come, remember to wear your white badge. A seniors (55+) season pass is only $65 (+GST). The special Tuesday rate for a seniors day pass is $10. The regular rate is $13. Registration and Information Session The Lodge at Snow Valley was a busy place on October 20 as members of our Club came to renew their membership and to get information about activities planned for the winter season: ski tours, on-hill programs, and opportunities to volunteer at Snow Valley. Over 200 members visited with old friends and welcomed 28 new members to the Club. Members Phone List The Members Phone List will be available after December 1, 2010, to those members who indicated on their membership application form they wished to receive one. Membership Renewal The new membership year begins November 1. Planning for the 2010-2010 year has been underway and the year promises to be as full and exciting as this past year. The membership fee of $30 ($25 for those 80 and older) will extend your membership to October 31, 2011. If you have not already renewed your membership, please do so soon to continue receiving information about Club activities, including the Club newsletter, Ski Tracks. This issue of Ski Tracks is last included in your 2009-10 membership. Visit the Club website (www.seniorsski.com) to download and print the Membership Application Form. The form is found at Join Us on the Club website. Members who would like forms mailed to them can contact Art Robinson at info@seniorsski.com or 780-435-8742. Forms will also be available at Welcome to Winter at Snow Valley and the Fall Dinner at the German Canadian Cultural Centre. Submitted by Art Robinson. Biking The official 2010 riding season concluded on October 7. The group met at Snow Valley and preceded the annual luncheon, held at the Snow Valley Lodge, with a vigorous ride in the Riverbend and Terwillegar neighbourhoods. As for now until there is adequate snow is on the ground, some are still cruising the bike trails and some 28 members are into fitness training at Kinsmen. Golf The golfing group has a new coordinator for next season. Marlene Thompson has agreed to take on the task. The golfers wish to thank Helen Lee for all her efforts in organizing the group this season. On-Hill Programs Three kinds of On-Hill programs are planned for the 2010 11 ski season. Provided Snow Valley opens as planned, the first Carving Clinic and Ski Improvement session will begin on November 16; Session A of the Racing/High Performance program will begin November 18. Program details are available on the Club website, www.seniorsski.com. PAGE 3
