BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER Dear Friends, As our summer comes to an end it is time to start thinking about safety as it relates to children going back to school; the busses will be on the roads, kids will be walking to school, crossing guards will be manning the busy intersections and we adults will be struggling to not only get our kids to bed at a decent time but, also to get back into our fall routines. Whatever fall brings to your life I know that it will be different from the care-free days of summer. To many of us fall means going back to our Y classes on a different day or at a different time. To others fall may mean starting to come to the Y regularly or stepping out of that comfort zone and attending a class that we have never tried before. Because we are the Y we want everyone to feel welcome when they enter our doors. The staff and I can t do it alone. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Many times we are the only social contact a person may have for the entire day, hard to imagine but true. Let s make the day special for everyone. Here s how you can help: Introduce yourself and learn something about the person you are meeting. Show them to their class or a specific place in the Y. Introduce them to the instructor and other participants. Give up your spot in class or help them set-up a spot. Help them adjust a machine or get a treadmill going. Explain an exercise or term they may not understand. Tell them the Life Guards name. Easiest of all is just to acknowledge them and let them know that you care! Friends addressing the Y s focus of Social Responsibility, Terri Terri Falkenberg Executive Director & Aquatics SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support for our neighbors. VOLUNTEERISM MAKES AN IMPACT Do you remember a coach or teacher in your life that changed how you thought, played, or made you feel like an all-star? Now it s your time to pay it forward! YMCA/USA SWIM TEAM LIFEGUARD Gain some volunteer hours for upcoming scholarship applications by lifeguarding for our swim team. We will provide the training and lifeguard certifications. Practice days, times, and shift will vary. Contact Terri. TOT-WATCH ASSISTANT Like working with young children ages birth-8 years? Interested in pursuing a career in early childhood? Volunteer to work in our drop-off Tot-Watch area assisting our fully-trained staff. Variety of days and times available. Contact Michell. VOLUNTEER COACH Be a positive role-model in somebody s life by coaching or helping coach a YMCA sports team. Contact Joe. VOLUNTEER (ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS) Add your personal touch to our programs or share your hobbies and passions. We are looking for volunteer photographers and planners for our socials. Contact Kristen. V LOOK FOR THE V Programs with this symbol are opportunities to volunteer. Contact the program director for more information. VOLUNTEER POLICY All volunteers are required to complete a Y volunteer application, possible interview, and pass a background check. Volunteer applications can be picked up at the front desk. These are great opportunities for high school aged kids looking to build up their volunteer hours for local scholarships and college applications. Fall I: September 9 October 26, 2013 23
