A Word From The Publisher Greetings and salutations. It s February and Skeet Season is about to be get started. A few clubs in some states began with January shoots and a few will hold shoots in February. March will definitely be busier. I know that I have already made hotel reservations for those shoots to which I must travel. I have also started pre-registering for shoots I plan to attend so that I can get the Rotations I want. Take a tip from the Boy Scouts and be prepared. The greatest successes come from good planning. That can be said about any endeavor from work to play. I have started getting flyers and schedules for shoots and, as always, we will put them on our website to share with our readers. If you are involved in promoting Skeet shoots for your club, don t forget to share your flyers with us. We will help you get the word out. Hopefully you are taking steps to avoid the flu epidemic that has gripped the country. That would certainly be a sorry way to start your year! So far our Winter weather has been a little colder than usual. That said, there is a hint of Spring in the air so let s enjoy those fairer days at the practice field when we can get them. Mardi Gras Season is upon us. If you are into that, we hope your celebrations are safe and fun. From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New 2018. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Funnies How cold is it? It s colder than a gold-digger s heart. It s colder than Jack Frost s toes when he skates on an icy pond. It s colder than a brass toilet seat on the shady side of an iceberg. It s so cold that the dogs are sticking to the fire hydrants. It s colder than a witch s belt buckle. It s colder than a day-old dumpling. It s colder than skinny dipping in a snow storm. News From The High House (A Message for Louisiana Skeet Shooters) Dear Louisiana Skeet Shooters: I hope you have been able to endure what has been a pretty cold winter for our part of the country. I am looking forward to getting back to shooting some registered skeet in March, 2018. Now is the time to begin planning your shoot schedule for the year. I have already done so and have begun pre-registering for the shoots. As you are planning your schedule for the year, think about who you could encourage to join you for registered shoots; i.e. a friend, a youth, a 4-H shooting sports participant, etc. What I have found is that many times people are just waiting for you to ask them to join you. Your LSSA Board of Directors decided in the October Board meeting to provide some monetary incentives to get 4-H shooters involved in Louisiana Skeet. Roland Thibodeaux, our Secretary-Treasurer has the forms to acquire these incentives should you know someone who is interested. As always, I am looking forward to seeing you again at the Louisiana Skeet shoots this year. Until I see you, I wish you the very best. Most Sincerely, Wayne Tanner President Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association Page 17

2017 LSSA Marathon Buckle Race Winners In 2017, the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association conducted the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race which was designed to increase participation in member clubs around the state and to add a little fun to the game. The rules of Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race were as follows: 1. Eligible Participants shoot in a 200 target Marathon in each gauge (12/20/28/.410) at participating Louisiana Clubs. Qualifying Marathons are 200 target events designated by the LSSA as qualifying for The Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. To be an Eligible Participant, a shooter must be a resident LSSA Member in good standing. 2. For Participants shooting more than one Qualifying Marathon in any gauge, the Qualifying Marathon shot with the highest score in each gauge will be counted. 3. To encourage Participants to travel to other clubs in our state, Participants must shoot at Qualifying Marathons held by at least two Louisiana Clubs. Participants can t shoot all of their Marathons at the same club. 4. A Participant s highest scores shot in Qualifying Marathons are averaged. That average for each gauge will be used to determine the Participants HOA Class for the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. [Example: John shoots in the 12 Gauge Marathon at Hunter s Run and scores 190. He also shoots in the 12 Gauge Marathon held at Lafayette Skeet Academy and scores 192. The 192 is higher, so we use that score to determine the 12 Gauge average for John. 192/2=96.00 or.9600 for our purposes..9600 is input in the calculation of John s HOA average in 5 below.] 5. The Participants will be ranked within their HOA Class, as determined based on their scores from the Qualifying Marathons. The highest score in each class will be the Class Winner. Buckles will be awarded for Champion and Runner-Up to eligible shooters with the highest scores in each of the following classes: (AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, and E) 6. Ties will be determined by scores in the.410 event. In the event of a tie in.410 scores, the scores in the 28 gauge event will be used to break the tie. 7. Entry Fee There shall be no additional entry fee assessed for this event over and above what the respective clubs charge for their entry fees. Participants will be automatically entered. The costs of the buckles is borne by the LSSA. 8. Contestants may attend a Qualifying Marathon Shoot and register 200 targets in a gauge other than the scheduled event and have them counted in the Buckle Race. For example, if you get down to the end of the year and find that you did not shoot in a Qualifying 20 Gauge Marathon, you could attend a Qualifying 12 Gauge Marathon, shoot and register 20 Gauge targets which shall be scored as registered targets only for that shoot, but have them counted as 20 Gauge targets in the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. Page 31
2017 LSSA Marathon Buckle Race Winners For 2017 there were actually 17 shooters who met the requirements to be considered in the Buckle Race Calculations. Several shooters were excluded because they did not shoot in Qualifying Marathons in every gauge or failed to shoot in Qualifying Marathons at more than one club. Congratulations to the winners of the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race! Buckles will be awarded to Class Champions and Runners-Up at the Louisiana State Skeet Championships in 2018. The 2018 Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race begins with the Crawfish Étouffée Open at Lafayette Skeet Academy on March 4. We hope to see you there. Doug Frey Page 32

Dining on The Road On our Fall trip to the Gulf Coast, Debbie and I went on of our day trips, leaving the condo in Orange Beach, we traveled up to the Styx River Shooting Center located on Waterworld Rd., just North of I 10 in South Alabama about 32 miles West of Pensacola, Florida. We shot pistols there for an hour or so. After working out our stress on paper targets, we decided to drive down to Navarre Beach. Early in our 40 year journey together we used to vacation in Navarre Beach. We had not been there in many years and thought we would check it out. We came on to the island on the East end but found that the last hurricane through that area had washed a lot of sand up on the road and we could not travel far. We did see a restaurant that appeared to be closed, that had at one time been called Liolios. From what I have been able to determine, that restaurant changed names several times over the years. I remember that I really enjoyed some baked oysters there. I believe the dish was called Oysters Georgiades (named after the owner). The oysters were baked on the half shell, with bacon, garlic, butter and Parmesan cheese. By this time we were getting hungry and we decided to drive down to Fort Walton in search a lunch spot. Our quest brought us to The Original Waterfront Crab Shack & Marina. It looked promising so we pulled in and checked it out. Located on the bay, the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We sat indoors, but there were large open windows which gave us a great view of the water outside. The brown pelicans were feeding which kept us entertained. Page 34
Dining on The Road The menu was full of seafood offerings. As the name would suggest, there were quite a number of King and Snow Crab dishes, steamed crab and shrimp combos. They offered a Soft Shell Crab Dinner which included two fried Blue Crabs. There were fried oysters, fish dinners (Cobia or Red Fish), even fish, chicken, oysters or shrimp tacos. Debbie and I both decided to try the Lobster Crab Cake lunch plate. The cakes were pan sautéed, served with Remoulade sauce on the side, along with homemade Coleslaw. Curly French fries and hush puppies. They were delish! The lunch portion came with one Lobster Crab Cake, which was plenty for Debbie s appetite. Thinking that might not be enough to fill me up, I ordered what the menu touted as their Shack Seafood Gumbolya, It was described as seafood gumbo meets jambalaya in this signature recipe chock full of fish, shrimp, sausage and other seafood delights. This dish was just as described, somewhere between soup and jambalaya in texture and quite tasty. It was a perfect solution for me! Page 35
Dining on The Road The menu has everything you might expect from salads to sandwiches. Fried pickles and even fried green tomatoes. There is something for everyone s tastes here. The restaurant is definitely a beachy seafood casual dining experience. The Chef is Corey Hassett from Lonsdale, PA, but he claims Destin as his home town. The restaurant was started by Emile Pagliari who bought the restaurant and marina after retiring from the Navy in 1997. If you find yourself in the Fort Walton Beach, Florida area, you might want to drop by The Original Waterfront Crab Shack Restaurant & Marina at 104 Miracle Strip Parkway SW. They open daily at 11 AM. Gumbolaya Doug Frey Page 36

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. Please contact us for our very reasonable rates for commercial advertisers..
