The primary objective of the Club was and continues to be yachting with tennis, swimming and other sports and activities included as secondary objectives. The collection was donated on the 80 th Anniversary of the founding of the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. The original building was owned by Charles Norton and was known as The Casino. It is on the beach at Owen Little Way in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Mr. Norton owned an Inn on the corner of Main Street and Owen Little Way and leased the beach property to the Yacht Club for several years before the Yacht Club purchased the location. The Board of Governors looked for land or a building on the waterfront for a number of years. The original two-story building was condemned at the end of the season as unsafe. Tom Hale designed a one story building which opened for the 7 season and lasted through 2008. The current two-story building opened for the 200 season. Scope and Content of Collection The collection contains minutes of the Annual Meeting, the Executive Committee, the Board of Governors and other meetings. There is also material concerning the annual awards of various trophies, race results, tennis results, and correspondence related to the aforementioned topics. Also included are reports of various social events, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and Yearbooks describing the means and methods of the operation of the club. Records about awards can be found in the annual reports, the 3
yearbooks from the time it was given until the time it ended, and are also listed in the board of governor's meetings and the annual meeting. These topics may be mentioned in minutes of meetings, financial documents, rules and regulations, bylaws, and staffing. Records of achievements from the founding of the club appear in the yearbooks. The programs offered varied from year to year. Private sailing lessons were available in 28 thus establishing the emphasis on youth and instruction from the founding of the club. Tennis was available from the beginning but fell by the wayside for a number of years then made a strong return. Arrangement Materials are arranged by record group and then chronologically.
