The win gave the Cardinal its fi rst win in a home-opener since a 43-3 rout of San Jose State in 2004 and also snapped a two-game losing streak to the Beavers. Gerhart s rushing total was the 27th highest in school history and marked the highest total ever recorded by a Stanford back in a season-opening game. Stanford rushed for 210 yards on 48 carries while holding the Beaver running game to just 86 yards on 28 rush attempts. However, the Beavers passing game accounted for 404 of their 490 yards in total offense, as Lyle Moevao completed 34-of-54 passes with three touchdowns, including two to Sammie Stroughter. Stanford built a 36-20 lead in the fourth quarter after Bo McNally picked off a Moevao pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. It was McNally s second career interception return for a touchdown (at Washington, 2006). Oregon State took just 2:07 to drive 97 yards on nine plays to cut the lead to 36-28, when Moevao hooked up with Stroughter on a three-yard pass. Oregon State got the ball back with 1:31 left and drove to the Stanford 16 yard line. On a third and fi ve play, Moevao completed a pass to Darrell Catchings, but fumbled through the end zone after absorbing a hit by Stanford s Taylor Skaufel, resulting in a touchback. Carpenter was as hot as the game time temperature of 103 degrees, as he completed passes to nine different receivers. Michael Jones had six catches for 79 yards and one touchdown, while Kerry Taylor and Kyle Williams each caught fi ve passes for 92 and 44 yards, respectively. Arizona State scored on four of its fi ve possessions in the fi rst half to build a 20-10 lead at halftime. After a 23-yard fi eld goal by Thomas Weber gave the Sun Devils an early 3-0 lead, Stanford scored on its fi rst possession, as Toby Gerhart capped a nine play, 80-yard drive with a fi ve yard touchdown run. Arizona State marched deep into Stanford territory on its next possession but had to settle for another Weber fi eld goal from 21 yards to cut the lead to 7-6. On the Sun Devils next possession, Carpenter connected to Michael Jones on an 11-yard touchdown pass to cap a seven play, 55-yard drive to give Arizona State a lead it would not relinquish, 13-7. A 28-yard fi eld goal by Stanford s Aaron Zagory cut the lead to 13-10 with 0:52 left in the half, however, the Sun Devils would pad their lead to 20-10 just before intermission, as Carpenter completed a 45-yard pass to Kerry Taylor for a touchdown. After Gerald Munns intercepted a Tavita Pritchard pass on Stanford s fi rst possession of the second half, the Sun Devils took only four plays to score on a drive that started on the Cardinal 34-yard line, as Dimitri Nance carried over from the one. Stanford cut the lead to 27-17 when Gerhart scored his second touchdown of the night and his fourth of the season on a one-yard plunge to cap a six play, 63-yard drive. However, two fourth quarter touchdowns by the Sun Devils ended any hopes of a Stanford upset. TCU opened a 14-0 lead on short touchdown runs by Justin Watts and Jeremy Kerley. Stanford cut the TCU lead to 14-7 when Doug Baldwin raced 38 yards on an end around reverse for his fi rst career touchdown. The Cardinal tied the game at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter, when Richard Sherman returned a blocked punt by Mark Mueller 21 yards for a touchdown. However, Stanford managed just 77 yards in total offense in the second half, as TCU scored 17 unanswered points for the fi nal, 31-14 count. The Cardinal fi nished with season highs in total offense (466), rushing yards (244) and passing yards (222) to post their second straight victory to improve to 3-2 on the season (2-1 Pac-10). Senior running back Anthony Kimble came off the bench to rush for a career high 157 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns while quarterback Tavita Pritchard completed 16-of-24 passes for a season high 222 yards and a career best three touchdowns. Stanford played most of the game without the services of leading rusher Toby Gerhart, who suffered a mild concussion at the 6:18 mark of the fi rst quarter. With the game tied at 14-14, Pritchard connected with wide receiver Doug Baldwin on a 61-yard touchdown pass to give Stanford a 21-14 lead at halftime. On its second possession of the second half, Stanford used an 83-yard run by Kimble to extend its lead to 28-14. The touchdown run tied for the fi fth-longest in school history. After Washington cut the lead to 28-21, Pritchard connected with sophomore Ryan Whalen on a 18-yard touchdown pass at the 10:22 mark of the fourth quarter to give Stanford a 35-21 lead. Stanford survived a late Husky touchdown with 1:25 left to post its second straight victory. Stanford s 35 points were the most in a road game since it posted a 41-38 victory at Navy in 2005. The Cardinal posted its second straight win at Husky Stadium, following a 20-3 victory in 2006. The last time Stanford posted back-to-back wins at Husky Stadium was in 1973 and 75. With starting quarterback Tavita Pritchard sidelined for the second half with a mild concussion, the signal-calling duties were split between backups Jason Forcier and Alex Loukas. At the end, it was Loukas at the controls for the fi nal two drives, including the gamewinning drive that started on the Stanford 40 with 5:41 left in the game. During the fi nal drive, Loukas picked up 32 yards on the ground and completed his only pass attempt of the game, a 21-yard toss to Ryan Whalen. Stanford drove to the Arizona nine yard line and on a third and six play, Loukas picked up seven yards and a fi rst down that put the ball on the two yard line. Two plays later, Gerhart scored the game-winning touchdown with 0:25 left. Stanford trailed 17-10 at intermission, but the Cardinal defense limited the Wildcats to just a pair of fourth quarter fi eld goals. On three occasions, Arizona drove the ball inside the Stanford six yard line only to come away with a fi eld goal each time. Stanford limited Arizona to just 77 rushing yards on 23 carries. Stanford s running back tandem of Gerhart (116) and Anthony Kimble (110) combined for 226 yards on the ground, with Kimble picking up most on his yardage on a 70-yard run in the third quarter to set up his short touchdown run that tied the game, 17-17 at the 4:20 mark.
