PREVIEWING OKLAHOMA The Sooners were picked by the league s coaches to finish fourth in the Big 12 Conference this season. The media voted Oklahoma 15th in the Preseason Associated Press Poll and the Preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll had Oklahoma at No. 16. Oklahoma returns to the court following a third straight Sweet 16 appearance. OU returns nine letterwinners from that squad and introduces four freshmen. The Sooners must replace one of its most successful senior classes after the graduation of two-time All-American point guard and eligibility exhausted for Carlee Roethlisberger and Lauren Willis. That trio claimed 54 wins inside the Lloyd Noble Center, the most by Oklahoma in a four-year span. Redshirt junior Whitney Hand is finally back to 100 percent health after suffering an ACL tear in November 2009 and returning to action in January 2011. Sophomore Aaryn Ellenberg, the team s top returning scorer, was true to self in the team s preseason scrimmage by leading the scoring with 22 points. Unfortunately, senior Jasmine Hartman will not play in 2011-12 after tearing her ACL in a September workout and Lyndsey Cloman doing the same in OU s first exhibition game on Nov. 2. Team Votes Captains for 2011-12 Junior Lyndsey Cloman, redshirt junior Whitney Hand and senior Jasmine Hartman are co-captains of the Sooners this season. The captains were voted by their teammates. All Home Games Televised All 14 of OU s regular season home games plus the two exhibition contests will be televised either locally on the Sooner Sports Network or nationally on Fox Sports Net or ESPN2. OU s games on the Sooner Sports Network are also webcast on SoonerSports.com All-Access subscription site (exhibitions free). An additional eight road games are scheduled to be televised on various networks, giving OU a guaranteed slate of 24 television broadcasts in 2011-12. DeCosta Returns as an Assistant Pam DeCosta has returned to Oklahoma after four seasons as head coach at San Jose State. There, she led the Spartans to their first victory over a ranked opponent in nearly three decades and the fifth Western Athletic Conference tournament victory in their history. DeCosta was an assistant at OU during Coale s first two seasons and was significant in constructing its championship tradition, having recruited some of the program s most distinguished student-athletes, including two-time All-American Stacey Dales. DeCosta was an assistant at the University of Kansas for a total of eight seasons (1994-96 and 1999-2003) with a stint at OU between. During her time at KU, the Jayhawks won a Big Eight Championship and made five NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1996. Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 regular season title for the third consecutive year. The Lady Bears received all of the possible nine first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) after capturing both the Big 12 regular season and postseason titles a year ago. Texas A&M, last season s national champion, was picked second and nabbed the other first-place vote. Just two points separated the next two spots as Texas was chosen third, followed by Oklahoma in fourth. Iowa State rounded out the top five. The remaining selections were Texas Tech in sixth, Kansas seventh, Oklahoma State eighth, Kansas State ninth and Missouri 10th. Sooners Aaryn Ellenberg and Whitney Hand were honorable mentions to the All-Big 12 team of Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims (Baylor), Carolyn Davis (Kansas), Toni Young (Oklahoma State), Chassidy Fussell (Texas) and Tyra White (Texas A&M). They Might Be Giants Oklahoma s 2011-12 women s basketball team gets in the record books before a minute of ball is even played. The team averages to 6-feet, 1-inch in height, the tallest team in OU s history. Led by the tallest player in the program s history, 6-foot-6 Nicole Griffin is among the eight of 13 Sooners who are 6-0 or taller. OU s first team was its shortest. The 1974-75 squad averaged 5-5 with its tallest member, freshman center Julie Arrington, towering over her teammates at 5-10. Freshman guard Alice Roach measured at 5-1, the shortest player in OU history. Just three seasons later, OU cracked 5-9 as an average height for the first time and would reach 5-11 after the following five years. It would take almost two decades to grow another inch, though, as the Sooners averaged to 6-0 for the first time last season. Two Sign in Early Period Nicole Kornet of Lantana, Texas, and Maddie Manning of Ankeny, Iowa, signed to play for the Sooners on Wednesday. Both are members of top-third of the ESPN HoopGurlz 100, which has OU s signing class rated 14th nationally. Kornet, a 6-foot combo guard, is rated No. 19 overall by ESPNU HoopGurlz and comes from Liberty Christian School (Argyle, Texas), the alma mater of junior guard Whitney Hand. Kornet was an all-tournament selection after helping Liberty Christian to the TAPPS 5A state championship her junior season. Nicole Kornet is one of the smoothest offensive players I have seen in a long, long time, Coale said. She s one of those kids whose play looks effortless. She makes the game look easy. She s long and skilled, and she is a gifted shooter. Despite the phrase s overuse, Nicole really is the total package. She s a kid whose play and presence will make our program better. Kornet s father Frank was a standout at Vanderbilt and played two seasons in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks. Her mother, Tracy, is an Emmy-winning news anchor for a CBS affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth. Manning, a 6-0 guard, is rated No. 33 overall in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100 and starred in volleyball and track, in addition to basketball, at Ankeny High School. Manning averaged 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 blocks and 2.9 steals as a high school junior, earning all-state honors while leading her team to a 20-4 record. I loved Maddie Manning the first time I watched her play. She has an intensity about her, a competitive instinct and drive, and a passion for the game that is special. She sees things on the floor that a lot of players don t see, and she has a knack for bringing what she sees to fruition. Also a star in volleyball and track, Manning s versatility has been compared to that of Stacey Dales, who became OU s first two-time women s basketball All-American. 1974-75 5-5 1977-78 5-9 1983-84 5-11 1999-2000 5-11 1/2 2010-11 6-0 1/4 2011-12 6-1

G a m e N o t e s 4 Last GAME vs. TCU TCU 76, (15) Oklahoma 69 FORT WORTH (Jan. 2, 2011) -- For the first time in 401 days, Oklahoma guard and Fort Worth-native Whitney Hand got to play. But this homecoming was all about the home team. Emily Carter scored 26 points while Helena Sverrisdottir added 24 to help TCU beat the Sooners 76-69 on Sunday, the Horned Frogs 28th home win in their last 29 tries. Hand, who grew up 15 minutes from the TCU campus, missed 45 games after suffering an ACL injury last season. She had a career-high 24 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, but the Sooners (10-3) couldn t find a way to slow down Sverrisdottir and Carter in the final 3½ minutes. With the game tied at 63 with 3:29 left, the senior pair combined for 12 of TCU s last 13 points while the Horned Frogs (8-6) held the Sooners to just two field goals in that span. TCU scored seven of the first eight points to start the second half and take a 35-33 lead, the Lady Frogs first of the game. That would start off a string of nine ties and eight lead changes until Carter and Sverrisdottir took over. Oklahoma led by as many as nine points in the first half and 32-28 at the break behind Hand s 17 points. She hit a 3-pointer for OU s first points of the game and reacted with a fist pump, letting out a big, Yeah! Danielle Robinson scored 17 points for Oklahoma, but the rest of the Sooners starters were just 6-for- 21 from the field. The Horned Frogs are 6-5 with five wins coming in their last six games using key free-throw shooting and a stingy defense that caused an average of 19 turnovers. Natalie Ventress, who started the first nine games but has come off the bench in the last two, and Antoinette Thompson lead TCU with both scoring 9.3 points per game. Six-foot-two sophomore Latricia Lovings contributes 5.2 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds. Lovings has 48 blocks in just 34 career games and is already among TCU s all-time top 10 in swats. Oklahoma had not lost three consecutive regular season games since dropping to Baylor (Jan. 24), Missouri (Jan. 28) and Kansas State (Jan. 31) in the 2003-04 season.
