Women s Basketball Elon at College of Charleston Dec. 7, 9 Charleston, S.C. Carolina First Arena 7 p.m. Head Coach Nancy Wilson Nancy Wilson, who won her th career game against Georgia Southern Feb. 6, 9, returned to take over as head women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston on March 7th,. She is now in her th season with the Cougars. Wilson, 7, returned to the College of Charleston and became the sixth head coach in women s basketball history after having served as its head coach from 976-84. The Lake City, S.C. native spent the previous four years as a professor in the school s Physical Education department. The 8-9 team completed its most successful season in Division I history, earning a record overall wins, as well as a record 4 league wins. Coach Wilson won her th game to become the 4th active Division I coach to reach the - win milestone. The Cougars also won a record nine games in a row. Charleston advanced to the Southern Conference tournament championship for the first time ever and fell to Western Carolina in a record three overtimes. Charleston upset Chattanooga in the semifinals, snapping a 7-game losing streak to the Mocs. Deidra Jones, Jade Hughes and Tonia Gerty earned All-Tournament honors. Gerty also earned All-Conference honors, with Hughes winning the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award. The Cougars finished the 7-8 season 4-6 overall and 9-9 in the Southern Conference. Charleston earned the # seed for the Southern Conference tournament and earned a first round bye for the first time. The Cougars defeated Georgia Southern to earn their first trip to the tournament semi-finals, falling to eventual tournament champion Chattanooga. That win also gave the College of Charleston its fourth straight tournament first round win. The Cougars closed out the regular season winning five of their last seven contests. The team also finished the season second in the conference in scoring defense first in threepoint field goal percentage defense. They also finished second blocked shots and steals. In her first year back at the helm for the Cougars, Wilson team compiled a 7- record, advancing to the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals for the third straight year, showing signs of a return to form at the close of the -4 season. Wilson became the Cougars head coach in 976 and led the women s basketball program to national prominence with seven -plus win seasons and three AIAW Division II national championship runners-up from 98-8. She was also named South Carolina s Coach-of-the-Year on three occasions, while sharing National Coach-of-the-Year honors in 98. Wilson still ranks as the winningest women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston with a.77 (-84) percentage. While coaching basketball, Wilson also served as head volleyball coach and sported a 86-9 (.689)

After eight years at the College of Charleston, Wilson became the University of South Carolina s fifth head coach beginning with the 984-8 season. Over a -year period, the Lady Gamecocks won five Metro Conference regularseason titles and three Metro Tournament Championships. Wilson s squad made five trips to the NCAA tournament and recorded - plus wins four of those years. In 988, Wilson took her team to the NCAA Tournament second round and in 99 took the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 6. In 984, her first year with the Gamecocks, Wilson was named Metro Conference Coach-of-the-Year. Wilson left USC with a -49 record and as the winningest coach in the history of the program. Due to Wilson s success at USC, in 99 she was named the head coach of the USA Women s Junior National Team in the Pan-American Basketball Confederation Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament. Her squad won the silver medal and qualified for the 99 Women s Junior World Championship, which was held in Seoul, South Korea. The north squad at the 98 National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge, La., was also coached by Wilson. She also led the Athletes in Action to a - record on a tour of Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan. After graduating from Lake City High (S.C.), Wilson earned her bachelor s degree in physical education from Coker College in 97. She then obtained her master s degree in Physical Education from The Citadel in 98. She began her coaching career as an assistant to the College of Charleston while teaching elementary physical education at Mt. Pleasant Academy.
