Hope to see many of you over Labor Day Weekend at the Dance-A-Rama in the Quad Cities. As you can tell from our flyer herein, our HASSDA Festival in Grove next year is shaping up well. We re excited about having the three specific callers together they re each so much fun

individually having them together will be great! You might take note of the difference in preregistration costs and waiting until after March 1 next year. Also, in case you haven t been to Grove before, the Best Western Timber Ridge Inn (the Host Hotel on the back of the flyer) is right across the street from the Grove Civic Center, which is the Festival facility. It would be good to get your reservations called in for the host hotel if you want to be within walking distance. I believe it is a 43-room facility, and the price is right! Please note next year will be our 30 th Anniversary it all started in Independence, Missouri, in 1980 so be planning your red, white and blue outfits, HASSDA s official colors. The HASSDA Board met the first weekend in June at the Kansas State Square Dance Convention in Salina, Kansas. We finalized details of the Excelsior Springs Festival, discussed details of how the 2010 Festival is shaping up, and rushed back out on the dance floor. Dee Dee Dougherty did a great job as the featured caller that weekend. One last thought the enclosed flyer is on our HASSDA web site; so please, either copy the enclosed one or get some copies off the internet and take with you in the coming months to help make next year a great HASSDA Festival in Grove! Thanks and hope you re enjoying the summer!! HASSDA Festival 2010 Getting Excited About Grove by Maye Wegner We are already thinking about and planning for the HASSDA 30 th Anniversary Festival in Grove, Oklahoma, in April 2010. We have such a great line-up of callers, cuers, and activities planned for you in Grove. Please see the enclosed flyer. Even better: please see the enclosed flyer, complete the registration, and send it back to us. From Mainstream to Advanced levels, you will be able to dance the long weekend away! Beyond that, we have the wonderful town of Grove itself! It is a beautiful town located on the Grand Lake O the Cherokees amid the green hills of Northeast Oklahoma. Tourism is a vital part of the local economy due to Grove s location on a large fishing-renown lake at the edge of the rugged Ozarks. The people of Grove know how to make visitors feel welcome with friendly, courteous service at restaurants and stores, plus fabulous facilities for the square dancing crowds. The HASSDA Festival is no stranger to Grove as we were there in 2008, and a wonderful time was had by all. You can stay at a campground, get a cabin at the lake, or book a room at one of the clean motels. It is all GOOD! Please note the Best Western is the hotel that is next to the square dance activities at the Convention Center and rooms are booking fast. Come join us, have fun, dance, dance, dance. and relax, relax, relax! See you there in a square! WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE YOUR NEWSLETTER ELECTRONIC? By Jim Faurote

With the ability to post and send printed material on the internet, many square dance organizations have gone to emailing their newsletters. HASSDA is no exception. If you would prefer to receive your newsletter by email, please notify our president, Marilyn Graham, at MarilynGraham@mchsi.com. By choosing to receive the newsletter by email, you will be helping us cut expenses. If we do not hear from you, you will continue to get a paper copy. ADVENTURES AT THE KSDA FESTIVAL IN SALINA By Jim Faurote The Kansas Square Dance Association hosted their annual festival in the Great Plains city of Salina, smack-dab in the middle of the state, over the weekend of June 4. In years past I have avoided the various state festivals, not having a committed partner for the entire weekend and thinking they were exclusively for married dancers. Anyway, a decision was made to hold the quarterly HASSDA board meeting there; and so I went. A large group of single dancers set out from both Kansas City and Mid-Missouri areas that Friday. We checked into our hotel, hurried through dinner, and headed to the Bicentennial Center. Friday night dancing featured a slew of various Kansas callers. All of them were good, and the evening was fun! What I did notice Friday was when we registered for the Festival we were given ribbons that said Solo Dancer. I was not sure about the purpose of them but then concluded they were given to help us identify other dancers that needed partners. Then, inside the main dance hall there was a section with a large sign over it that stated Dancers without Partners. We congregated near that section during most of the Saturday evening dance and danced not only within our own group but with other singles that we had not met until that point. Both the solo dancer ribbon and having a section for dancers without partners are ideas that other large square dance festivals and larger square dance clubs (including the singles clubs) can take note of to make single dancers feel more welcome at their functions. I have heard several stories from dancers that go alone to a dance, including a single s club dance, and end up sitting by themselves during most of the tips. I chose to spend part of Saturday exploring some of the sights of Salina. There is a regional historical museum downtown that was especially noteworthy. Also, for a city of its size (fifty thousand) and location (hours away from any large city), it has several art galleries. The temperature climbed above ninety degrees, so I went to the Bicentennial Center just in time to catch the Air-Cap cloggers from Wichita. They did a wonderful exhibition, with much talent and energy; and I wished they could have danced all afternoon. Saturday evening featured the Grand March of all Kansas clubs, and then dancing with Dee Dee Dougherty from Minneapolis, MN, as the featured caller. I had never danced to her before; thus, I did not know what to expect. She was fun. She was energetic. I loved the combination of big ole Texas hat and Texas cowgirl getup with the bright blonde hair and talk that was pure Minnesota. After the almost 100-degree day, a big thunderstorm broke out at the end of dancing on Saturday. Fortunately, it was brief and afterwards many of us ended up at Brahm s for ice cream sundaes and more visiting. The dancers filled up the place and kept it open long past its 11:00 p.m. closing time. I think most people left there, and left Salina on Sunday, with fond memories of the 2008 KSDA Festival.

WANTED: A NEBRASKA COORDINATOR AND ARTICLE ON NEBRASKA FESTIVAL By Jim Faurote There are two Nebraska-specific requests. The first is that we still need an area coordinator for the state of Nebraska. The job description is not onerous at all. The main responsibility is to take the HASSDA Festival flyers to all the dances you might attend in the Cornhusker State. (You would have the distinction of setting the best-looking flyer out on the table.) As time gets closer to the Festival, you might possibly briefly announce the Festival during the dances you attend. Being area coordinator would not entail traveling the state, but would entail making an effort to advertise our Festival each year. The other thing an area coordinator does is notify the HASSDA Editor of any special events of interest to single dancers in the state. This might be taken from the state publication in Nebraska each quarter or the website www.squaredancene.org The other request involves writing a short article, just a few paragraphs, on your experiences at the Nebraska State Festival in Hastings in September. Anyone who attends can write this article. Just notify me by email at jfaur526@hotmaill.com in advance if you intend to write one. The article deadline would be around October 24. The main reward is seeing your name in the byline and getting yourself published, i.e., no monetary stipend. HASSDA AREA COORDINATORS ARKANSAS: Bud Cude, 223 Highway 370, Mena, AR 71953, 479-384-2816 KANSAS: Diana Wagner, 3717 SW Cambridge, Topeka, KS 66610, 785-266-9442 IOWA: Jo Saffel, 3910 80 th Street, Urbandale, IA 55702, 515-276-9034 MISSOURI: Louis Coleman, 10000 NW 86 th St., Kansas City, MO 64153, 816-880-0713 OKLAHOMA: Delores Chambers, 1051 SW 4 th St., Jones, OK 73049 NEBRASKA: It could be you, if you live in Nebraska. Contact Jim, newsletter editor, at jfaur526@hotmail.com if you would agree to serve in this function. We need you to report events and promote HASSDA in your state!! Meet the Missouri Coordinator Louise Coleman By Lee Williams Louise grew up on a farm near the isolated Sand Hills community of Arnold, Nebraska. She was introduced to barn dancing by her father while still in grade school. She later married and moved to the Kansas City area where she eventually started dancing the real thing, and has been square dancing since 1972. Louise currently belongs to two clubs; the Unicorns and Crosstrailers. She also frequently dances with Swingin Singles. Louise has taken an active part in promoting square dancing by

holding various offices through the years. She served as Corresponding Secretary and Insurance Coordinator with the Kansas City-area Heart of America Federation from 2007 to June of this year. She is currently the Recording Secretary for the Crosstrailers. Louise keeps a busy schedule as a part time Office Manager for Silk Paint Corporation and with her hobbies. Besides square dancing, her other interests include ballroom dancing, sewing, and cooking (especially trying new recipes). She has four grandchildren and one great-grandchild for which I am sure she gets plenty of cookie-baking experience. Louise is not exactly new to the position of Area Coordinator as she was co-coordinator with Julie Lemke last year. Louise, you are a great asset to our Association, and we thank you!
