Meet our Lodge Chief, Kevin Hays! Hello, my name is Kevin Michael Hays, and I am YOUR Lodge Chief! I am 20 years old, and live in Santa Maria with my parents and brother. I am currently about to begin my second year of junior college at Allan Hancock here in Santa Maria, with the goal of transferring to a State college after this year and majoring in History. I work nearly full time for the City of Santa Maria s Parks and Recreation division, doing a wide range of activities that keep me busy not just Monday-Friday, but some weekends as well. Besides school and work, I keep occupied with hobbies and activities, such as OA! I have been involved in Scouting since I began as a Wolf Scout back in 3 rd grade or so. I earned my Eagle Scout Award during the summer of 2010 with Troop 95, based out of Orcutt. My Eagle Scout Service Project can be seen at Pioneer Park here in Santa Maria, as I created a permanent flagpole memorial near the firebowl in the rear of the park. I have been very active in the OA since I was inducted just before earning my Eagle Scout, back in 2010. I have served as Tequepis Chapter Chief, Lodge Vice-Chief, and now I am finishing serving as Lodge Chief. While I know I will not be able to continue serving in a leadership position in the OA after I transfer schools later next year, I can guarantee I will continue to stay active in the closest OA Lodge to me and keep that bright flame of cheerful service glowing strong no matter what. Some of my other hobbies and interests besides OA, school, and work include hunting, camping, hiking, multiple sports, and just hanging out with my friends and family. Chances are, if you cannot get a hold of me and I am not in school or working, I am doing one of the following: cheering on one of my four favorite sports teams, the San Francisco 49ers, the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Kings, or the New York Yankees, helping out my Alma Mater High School, St. Joseph High School, with their Kairos Retreat Program for outgoing Seniors, or simply hanging out with my friends, family, or Scout Store girlfriend. (Yes, I am dating one of the Scout Store girls from the Santa Maria store.) I am very proud to be your Lodge Chief, and I am always open for calls or emails to get your input! Remember, YOU are the Lodge! Kevin Hays, Lodge Chief khaysboy1@msn.com (805) 714-4497

Page 2 Chiefly Speaking Successful Summer Conclave Fall Ordeal Fall Fellowship, LLD Greetings Arrowmen! I hope you all have had fun-filled and relaxing summers! This summer had tons of great OA events and memories that will last a lifetime. I know that our NOAC Lodge contingent has been having a blast the last few weeks. Also, we had a very successful summer at various summer camps around the area, including our Summer Rededication Ceremonies held at Rancho Alegre. I thank all of you who were able to come out and enjoy the summer with us. Fall is right around the corner, and that means a number of important and exciting events will be taking place in the next few months. First and foremost, Section W4N will be holding our annual Conclave in September at Camp Three Falls! This event is going to be awesome all around the board! You will NOT want to miss out on the excitement! Please check out the Conclave flyer in of the Bear Claw for more info, including how to register! Register early! One of the other exciting events the fall holds in store for our Lodge is our annual Fall Ordeal, which will be held in October at Camp Mabel French. Please see the registration form in of the Bear Claw for more info. We really need to have not only a large group of candidates go through the Ordeal, but we also need as many Brotherhood eligible candidates to receive their Brotherhood honor. So again, you will not want to miss the Fall Ordeal! November will hold several very special and important events for our Lodge. First, we will have our annual Fall Fellowship at Camp French, where we will hold both a Lodge Leadership Development in the afternoon, and the yearly Lodge Officers Elections in the evening. This is a big election and turning point for our Lodge, so you will not want to miss out on this event. Later in November, we will have another Vigil Weekend to induct two more Vigil candidates- Mr. Donald Luce and Ms. Rebecca Fields. More info to come on this event later on. It will be one that Vigil members will want to attend. Again, hope you all are having a wonderful summer, and are ready for a busy, exciting, and quickly approaching fall! Hope to see many of you signing up for and attending Conclave! Yours in the Brotherhood, Kevin Hays Lodge Chief

Page 3 Summer camping Come to Conclave! Attend the Fall Ordeal! Go for Brotherhood! Advisor s Article Summer is the time for camping. The grew out of a love of camping, especially summer camp. I hope that all of you have had the opportunity go enjoy the fun and adventure of summer camp this year and perhaps some of the great high adventure opportunities available through Scouting as well. Although we focus on camp during the summer, it is time to think of the many great OA activities coming up in the next few months. First, in September we have the Section Conclave. Conclave this year will be held from September 14th through the 16th at Camp Three Falls, near Frazier Park. Online registration is open and I encourage all of you to register and join in supporting our Lodge and the Section at Conclave. There will be many opportunities for training, fellowship, and fun. Late in the fall, we will be holding our Fall Ordeal, which will be at Camp French from October 19-21. Please put those dates on your calendar and come out for a great weekend of service, and more fellowship and fun. It should be a great weekend. For those of you who are eligible for Brotherhood, I strongly urge you to take the next step and seal your membership in the Order. The Fall Ordeal would be the ideal time to do that. If it has been 10 months since you went through the Ordeal, you are eligible. More information and the appropriate forms to start are on the Lodge website. I look forward to seeing all of you at Conclave and the Fall Ordeal! Yours in the Brotherhood, George Michaels Lodge Advisor
