Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 4 1. APPLICATION Reverse osmosis process is one of the most advanced technologies of water purification. Reverse osmosis filter uses a special semipermeable membrane similar in its structure and properties to the membrane of living cell. It can be conceived of as having tiny pores that are 200 times finer than virus particle and 4000 times finer than most bacteria. The principle of reverse osmotic water purification is modelled after living cell s natural water cycle. It allows to purify drinking water from all harmful impurities, including nitrates and viruses (see Figure 1 below). Only molecules of certain size can penetrate cellular membrane. Concentrate effluent Feed water stream Membrane Purified water Water molecules Impurities Figure 1. Reverse osmosis process illustration Ecosoft Robust is a high recovery direct flow operation capable multistage reverse osmosis system. The system can be equipped with a pressure tank for increasing purified water flow rate, and multistage design allows to obtain a high recovery of up to 50%. The system is tapped in water mains using feed adapter 2 and feed valve 3. Red tube is run from feed valve to the inlet port in system s port rack (labeled). The port rack also includes connection ports for the drain, pressure tank 6 (if used), and purified water faucet 1 or purified water pipe. Feed water first undergoes prefiltration in sediment prefilter where it is stripped of suspended particles (rust, sand, hemp strands etc), and carbon prefilter where it is purified from organic color and chlorine compounds. Pressure gauge no. 1 on front panel displays water pressure after the two prefilters. After the prefilters, water goes in pressure booster pump, which sends it in the membrane array, consisting of three membrane housings arranged in two stages.

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 5 Figure 2. Robust reverse osmosis system The pressure booster pump feeds the water to the first stage of the reverse osmosis membrane array with two parallel 100 GPD membrane modules. Permeate from both module goes to the permeate collector, and concentrate goes to the second stage with one 100 GPD membrane module. Second stage permeate goes to the permeate collector, and concentrate is discarded to drain via concentrate flow restrictor and drain port in port rack. Pressure gauge no. 2 shows pressure between the two stage of membrane array. Permeate goes to purified water line or pressure tank if installed, passing through the carbon postfilter. Purified water line may go to purified water faucet or be connected with some other consumer appliance. High pressure switch installed before the postfilter reads pressure in permeate line and starts the reverse osmosis system when it drops (due to taking of some water from the pressure tank or opening purified water faucet). When the system switches on, entry solenoid valve is opened and booster pump is powered up, which allows feed water into the system. The water goes through 1st and 2nd prefilters, then is pressurefed by the booster pump to membrane array, where permeate is produced and sent to permeate line to make up for the lost pressure in tank/pipe. When purified water stops being drawn from the system, pressure starts to build up and closes high pressure switch switching off the system. Robust RO system has low feed water pressure protection implemented with a low pressure switch, which prevents the pump and solenoid from operating if feed

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 6 pressure is less than 0,4 bar. Two pressure gauges on the front panel show operating pressure in the system, which allows to diagnose potential and occurring problems. Direct flow capacity of Robust system is 55-60 l/h. If the required peak flow is greater than that, the system can be equipped with a pressure tank, which can be connected with the system via pressure tank port in the port rack. Pressure tank equipped system can produce up to 80-120 l/h purified water flow. The duration of peak flow capacity will depend on pressure tank size. Depending on system make (model), the system may be equipped with a mineral filter, UV disinfection unit or another type of postfilter.

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 11 check that feed water meets requirements in p. 2.2**. ** If the water quality does not meet requirements, refer to a water treatment specialist company for assistance selecting the appropriate product for normalizing the offending constituents. 3) Before proceeding with the installation, ensure there is enough space for the assembled system. If using pressure tank, provide room for it as well. In case of shortage of space, pressure tank can be removed to the distance of connecting tube length. 4) Install the reverse osmosis system in accordance with below procedure. 4.2. INSTALLATION Caution! This product has been factory tested for leaks, and may contain residual moisture. Before installation of tubing, filters, and membranes, wash your hands with antibacterial soap. Ensure that the installation place is shielded from direct sunlight and removed from heating appliances. 1 Remove the reverse osmosis system from and the box and check that all parts are inside the bag. Do not open the bag before verifying. You will not be able to claim missing parts if the bag is opened. 2 Shut off water supply in place of installation and open a water tap for 1 minute to relieve pressure in the system. Then close the tap. 3 Tap feed adapter 4 into the cold water plumbing. Install feed valve 5 into the feed adapter. To avoid leaks use PTFE seal tape. The adapter size fits the most common ½ pipe. If your pipe is another size, install an appropriate fitting piece. 4 Unscrew compression nut from the feed valve tube connection. Slip red tube through the nut and connect it to the feed valve tube connection, then screw

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 12 compression nut back on till snug. Connect the other end of red tube to the inlet port of the RO system s port rack. Push tube all the way to the tube stop when making push-fit connections. 5 Drain saddle 6 fits most standard drain pipe. Install the drain saddle on drain pipe as follows. Bore 5 mm hole in the drain pipe, apply rubber gasket with sticky base (included in the package). Install drain saddle on top of the gasket so that push-fit fitting in the saddle is located precisely above the hole in drain pipe. Tighten nuts on drain saddle fasteners with a wrench. Insert black tube in the push-fit fitting in drain saddle. Connect the other end of black tube with drain port of the RO system s push-fit port rack. 6* Put a few turns of PTFE tape on tank nipple thread. Screw tank valve on the tank nipple. Turn the valve fully off. NOTE! Test air pressure in the empty tank bladder (remove cap on the lateral bottom to access valve stem). Reading should be as specified in p. 2.1. If necessary, use air pump with to inflate the bladder. If pressure is too high already, push on the valve stem s core to relieve it. 7 Install the faucet 7.1 To install purified water faucet 8 bore a 12,5 mm diameter hole in desired location on sink or countertop. Caution! Metal shavings can damage your sink, remove them carefully once you have finished drilling. If the mounting surface is stone or ceramic, use a carbide drill bit 7.2 Mount the faucet over the hole on top of small rubber washer, chrome plated base, and large rubber washer. Fix the faucet firmly with plastic washer, lock washer, and nut put on the faucet shank underneath sink surface. 7.3 Put compression nut on free end of

Push the end of blue tube inside the shank bottom a few centimeter deep, seat the ferrule against shank bottom and screw compression nut snugly on shank thread. The faucet should now be firmly fixed on top of sink, and blue tube tightly seated in compression fitting at the bottom of faucet shank. 8 Remove 1 st and 2 nd prefilter housings (left to right), put the polypropylene filter in the first bowl, carbon filter in the second. 9 Install the housings back on the system frame. Hand tighten only. 10 Prepare a suitable water container. Remove feed water tubes from the two first stage membrane housings and place the free ends in the prepared container. Open main shutoff valve and the system s feed valve to start rinsing prefilters. Collect running water in the container and discard when full. Repeat until there are no carbon fines in rinsewater. Install the free tube ends back in push-fit fittings in membrane housings and lock with locking clips. 11 Install carbon postfilter in 3 rd filter housing from the left. 12 Install three membranes in membrane housings. Caution! When installing reverse osmotic membrane, do not take it out of the bag. Cut the bag at the opposite end to membrane s brine seal, push the membrane inside membrane housing. Do not touch membrane surface at any time. 13 Open feed valve and purified water faucet for 30 minutes to rinse membranes and other parts of the system. Do not open tank valve at this time. Close the purified water faucet and check all connections for leaks. Caution! Inspect the system for leaks every day for the first week after installation. Continue to check periodically onward. When leaving for an extended while, shut off main valve to remove water supply to the system. 14* Open tank valve and let the system fill it. The system will switch off when tank is full. Open purified water faucet and discard the first tankful of purified water. When the tank is drained empty, close the purified water faucet and let the system refill the tank. The water can be used now. * Skip steps 6 and 14 if installing a tankless system.

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 14 5. POST-INSTALLATION 1. Use calibrated TDS meter to test your tap water and purified water total dissolved solids. Write down the readings in maintenance log. 2. Verify proper functioning of feed water solenoid. The system must switch off and stop discharging concentrate when pressure tank is full* and purified water faucet is closed. 3. Inspect the system carefully for leaks. 4. Advise the system s owner how to operate and maintain the system, refer to this manual. 5. Make a record of system installation in maintenance log. 6*. When using a pressure tank, note that the tank is full when high pressure switch is activated, pump switches off, and concentrate stops running to drain. The time to fill the tank depends on water pressure at the tapping point. * Skip if using a tankless system.

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 15 6. OPERATION This product should be used for purification of only cold water. If purified water flow rate has decreased or tank is taking longer than normal to refill, the likelihood is that prefilters are soiled and need to be replaced as soon as possible. Delayed replacement of prefilters can result in damage or failure of the membranes. In order to avoid this, it is recommended to replace prefilters at least once in three months of continuous use. If purified water flow rate drops significantly and is not caused by prefilter wear or abnormal operating conditions, the array of membranes has to be replaced. For best purified water quality, replace membranes at least once a year. If the system is to be out of operation for two weeks or longer, sanitize the system as described in paragraph 7. When discontinuing use of the system, it is recommended to shut off the water supply. Recommendations on the front panel plate indicate what actions should be undertaken if abnormal pressure is read on pressure gauges. Pressure after cartridges lower than 1 bar Change cartridges higher than 5 bar Install a pressure regulator Operating pressure lower than 4 bar Contact after sale service higher than 7 bar Contact after sale service Figure 2. Robust system front panel Pressure after prefilters (1 st pressure gauge). If pressure after prefilters is less than 1 bar, this may indicate low mains pressure or clogged prefilters. Test pressure at the feed adapter site. If it exceeds reading on the pressure gauge significantly, replace prefilters. Otherwise, low feed water pressure is at fault and has to be sorted out. If the 1 st pressure gauge displays over 5 bar after the system switches on, power down the system immediately, disconnect water supply, and install a pressure regulator upstream of the system. Then, continue setting up the system. Maximum recommended feed water pressure is 3,5 bar. Pressure in the membrane array (2 nd pressure gauge). If operating pressure in the membrane array is lower than 4 bar or amounts to feed water pressure, this can be caused by any of the following:

Instruction manual for ECOSOFT Robust reverse osmosis system 16 motor power supply fault (possibly due to broken/torn pump motor cord) air trapped inside pump s chamber jamming of the pump with solids such as carbon fines (if carbon filter was not properly washed before use) Generally, if operating pressure reading on the 2 nd pressure gauge falls below its normal range, contact your dealer s service. If pressure on 2 nd pressure gauge is over 7 bar, this could be due to pressure regulator failure or the RO system s high pressure switch fault. Contact your dealer s service for help. 6.1.
