San Diego County Cymbidium Society Page 2 of 8 President s Message Hi All: Executive Board Meeting Dates 2017: February 18 Coco s Restaurant Vista, CA It is getting to be a lot like Summer here in Vista. I say that even though we are in the Month of June (June Glum.). Most of our plants are now growing so we need to keep on watering /misting and fertilizing. Your board will meet before the next meeting, so let me know if you want anything brought up. Remember, the next meeting will be a potluck, so come hungry. We will not be meeting in July or August, as is our custom, so come in June and say HAPPY SUMMER to your fellow members. We had a wonderful time at the Spencer s on June 10. Actually, I was not able to attend being out of town, but all the reports I heard were positive. Many thanks to the Spencer s for putting on a great repotting demonstration. See you at the meeting on June 21. Ivan June 17 Panera Vista, CA Caravan to the Spencer s House Do you have photos of your blooming orchids? Please share them with us. Email them to the newsletter editor at OrchidDiva@lobalinfo.com. There s no guarantee that all photos will be used, but every effort will be made to include some. Inside the Cym/Den. house Jerry gives a tour. Refreshments: Everyone! It s a potluck! Admiring the Den. speciosums Repotting demo with power tools! Inside one of the greenhouses. Hands -on repotting.

San Diego County Cymbidium Society Page 3 of 8 Letter from the Editor: Hi All! Well, I represented the Society at the San Diego County Fair last Wednesday. I gave a repotting demonstration on Cymbidiums and there was a good crowd watching. I hope to see that some of them will attend our meetings in the future. I then had a chance to check out the rest of the Fair for free (perks of volunteering)! Great garden landscapes and flower shows including the Orchid Show are beautiful to see. Some of the plants entered are from our own members. And as I have said before these ribbons come with money, so plan on entering the shows next year! I love going to the Fair. The home gadget vendors are always fun to watch. They give you their spiel and I am occasionally enticed to buy. Actually more than occasionally because I realized that I had many of the gadgets I walked down the aisles and said oh I have that one too many times. I looked for the automatic orchid repotting machine, but I guess that s me. I am soooooo close to being done with my shade house. I know I know. What is taking so long?! It s something I need help with and my hubby has been kind to help me on weekends. These things just take longer than you estimate. It took us all afternoon just to get the end panel measured, cut out and grommets put in. We will hang it up on the weekend. This month is our Potluck Extravaganza! We will be having a Fiesta with lots of tacos! Yeah!! I love tacos! Hope to see you all there! By the way, after this month, we have a 2 month break so you won t get another newsletter until September, but I will send out emails if anything of interest comes up. Take care and have a safe and fun summer! Don t forget to water your orchids! And think about being becoming a Society Board Member next year! Lena Shiroma Your Humble Newsletter Editor Shade house sooooo close to being done. Orchids at the Fair! Blc. Beautiful Morning wants to move into the new shade house now. Orchid Show ongoing until the end of the Fair. Each week is a new showing. Pretty orchids at the Fair.

San Diego County Cymbidium Society Page 4 of 8 Tom Biggart s Secret to Growing Rupiculous Laelias Actually it s not a secret, because Tom wants us all to grow these little gems and to grow them well. Tom suggests a shallow ceramic or glazed clay pot. If you use a deeper pot just add more large rocks on the bottom. Large ½ inch gravel use more of this in larger pots Tom uses a layering technique. On the bottom is a few inches of ¼ - ½ inch gravel. Then layer about ½ inch of sphagnum moss. This is to keep the sand-soil mixture from washing out. Place your orchid into the pot and fill with the sand-soil mix. Finish with a thin layer of gravel. This layer is for keeping the soil from lifting up and washing out over edge of pot when watering. A beautifully grown rupiculous laelia ¼ inch gravel Sphagnum moss wet it first before use. 50% sand and 50% potting soil
