RESIDENTS Resident Quantity: one student (eventually accompanied by his wife, if sufficient students partake) Personal Info: Mr. Schmidt is 53 years old and he works for the local Sparkasse branch. He is married and father to two grown up children. He just finished paying for his house. He does not like the local youth groups who sometimes ruin his accurately trimmed garden after having been to a nearby youth center. Interests: QUIET! QUIET! QUIET! No skatepark in front of my house. This would bring more of those awful young people to my street. How does he Talks to fellow residents and the press. Tries to convince city council members of his position. Mr. Schmidt was an active sports person when he was younger. Unfortunately, his job does not give him enough time anymore.

Resident Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mrs. Huber is 73 years old. She owns an allotment garden (= Kleingarten) between Burgdorfer Weg and the railway line. Young people have stolen wood from her allotment garden in the past; they used it to ignite several wild campfires. Interests How does she I do not mind a skatepark, just avoid building it in front of my door. Talks to fellow residents and the press. Tries to convince city council members of her position. Mrs. Huber thinks that all skaters will break their bones eventually. She has a skating grandson who spent all his christmas money on his hobby. She does not mind that, but thinks skateing is dangerours.

Resident Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mrs. Kaffeberger lives in Wackerstrasse in Zähringen. She has breakfast at 5:00 am every morning and she has to drink a lot of coffee to be fully awake. She is working as a nurse in a Freiburg hospital and has a little daughter. Interests How does she I do not want to give this open-air site away tot he skaters, because I love going there with my daughter. But I am aware that all young people need a space to pursue their hobbies. Talks to skaters, fellow residents, and also to a city council member who works in the same hospital. Mrs. Kaffeeberger wants the skatepark to be somewhere where it does not disturb residents.

Resident Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mr. Robert is 25 years old and he is a student of computer science. He gets up when most people already had their lunch. Interests I do not give a damn! The other people in my shared flat told me that I have to come here. How does he Mr. Robert will join the majority because he thinks the majority is always right. He wants the debate to be over quickly, otherwise he would miss the latest episode of Star Trek.

Resident Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mrs. Michelmichel, is living in the Alban-Stolz Straße. The Skatepark and her house would be separated by the railway line. She does not know how loud the skatepark will turn out to be. Interests How does she I m afraid that the kids will make alot of noise. I on t want them to play on the railway line as a test of courage, too. Mrs. Michelmichel does not pay attention to arguments made by teenagers. She will only listen to adults. Because she does not know any teenagers herself, she is afraid of them. Mrs. Michelmichel only likes babies.

SKATERS Skaters Quantity: one to three students Personal Info: Youths between 12 and 20 years old. Interests Skate! Skate! Skate! We intend to build a proper skatepark, preferrably in downtown Freiburg. How do they The group decides independently on a possible location. After the decision, the young people do everything in their power to be heard. They talk to politicians, residents and activists, but they also block streets in downtown Freiburg on a Saturday afternoon. The Skaters do not have a real strategy. Their main intention is to get attention from politicians.

Skater Quantity: one to three students Personal Info: Simon Huber is a 15 year old Skater from Freiburg Zähringen. He currently attends Droste-Gymnasium and he loves to skate with his friends. He is the grandson of Mrs. Huber. Interests Skate! Skate! Skate! We intend to build a proper skatepark, preferably in downtown Freiburg. How do you The group decides independently on a possible location. After the decision, the young people do everything in their power to be heard. They talk to politicians, residents and activists, but they also block streets in downtown Freiburg on a Saturday afternoon. Simon broke his arm last summer while jumping over an illegal skate ramp close to the main station.

Skater Quantity: one to three students Zur Person: David Dünker, is an 18 year old apprentice from Freiburg St. Georgen. Since he is already working, he has more money than most of the other teenagers. Interests Skate! Skate! Skate! We intend to build a proper skatepark, preferably in downtown Freiburg. How does he David is friends with the owner of the local Skateshop Fritz Boardman. He helps Fritz to convince the city council to build a new skatepark, and buys all his tools in the Skateshop. Since there aren t that many locations around Freiburg, David sometimes takes his parents car to go to a bigger city like Stuttgart, which has much better skateparks than his hometown.

Skater Quantity: one to three students Personal Info: Anika Vicker is a 14 year old girl who lives in Freiburg Wiehre. When she was eleven, she learned how to skate in a local youth club (Haus der Jugend). She attends Lessing Realschule. Interests: How does she Skate! Skate! Skate! I want a skatepark close to where I live. The skatepark should have some street lights, because my parents do not want me to skate in a dark area. Meets with her friends who skate as well. Her government teacher has advised her to talk to a local politician. Anika and her friends are unsure about what steps to take next. Her parents or a social worker will help her to get in touch with politicians.

CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS City Council Member Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mrs. Ernie is a 73 year old woman and has been a member of the city council for over, 20 years. She is very active when it comes to family, social and ecological issues. Interests I am very sorry, but I do not know anything about skateboarding. How does she She listens to all interest groups and is eager to talk alot about this issue, to come to a proper conclusion. Mrs. Ernie has many children and loves her pets. She does not know yet how she will decide. She has the residents interests in mind as well.

City Council Member Quantity: one student Personal Info: Mr. Berth has been a member of the city council for over 10 years. He enjoys smoking a pipe occasionally and works as a policeman. Interests How does he I want those kids to stop skating at the main station. It is simply too dangerous. He thinks of himself as the most important city council member, and demands respect from his colleagues. He will listen to any good argument. Mr. Berth cares about law and order. He used to be an active tennis player, and therefore he is not against young people who enjoy their sport.

City Council Member Quantity: one student Personal info: Mrs. Gebhard is 47 years old and enjoys a hippie lifestyle. She only cares about her own quarter of Freiburg, so if an issue does not affect her quarter, she usually does not vote. Interests I do not have any good or bad feelings about skating. I just do not care as long as the residents can live in peace How does she Mrs. Gebhardt is not very active. She likes to see how the skatepark topic develops, before she picks a side. Even though most skaters are not able to vote yet, an opening ceremony of a sports ground for teenagers is always a good photo opportunity.

City Council Member Quantity: one student Zur Person: Mr. Drei owns a bookstore in Freiburg. His son was a punk and not a skater. Mr. Drei lives on his own as his wife left him and his son moved away for college. Interests I strongly approve a skatepark. It just should not get too expensive. How does he Mr. Drei works in his bookstore alot, therefore he cannot be active in a political movement. He will support the initiative with the best arguments. Personal freedom is very important to Mr. Drei. He has quite a chaotic character.

INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE Public works and parks department Ouantity: one to two students Personal Info: Mr. Strahsner moved to Freiburg a few years ago. He used to skate when he was a teenager. He stopped when it was not cool anymore, but he still likes it secretly. The priority in his job is to take care of roads, bridges and public parks not skateparks. Interests I would love to build a skatepark with my team. I just need two more things: money and a decision from the city council How does he Assignment Mr. Strahsner has a key role. He writes the paper on which the city council will decide later. (The teachers will help you J ) and hosts the skaterhearings. He is very much worried about his own image. Since the city pays him, he cares what the council members ad the residents think about him. Personally, he sympathizes with the skaters. Mr. Strahsner will be the moderator of the hearings.

Press Quantity: one to three students Personal Info: The number of press people can vary. If there are many students who would like to participate in this simulation, the press can acquire up to two assistants (Mr. Druh and Mrs. Weh) Interests I m looking for a cover story, even if I have to add something myself. How do they The press interviews all interests groups and asks for their opinion. Then writes them on paper or the board to communicate them. A wallpaper is provided, so the press can publish their photographs and reports. They act as the twitter account of the local newspaper.

Skateshopowner Quantity: one or two students Personal Info: Fritz Boardman has a little son. Fritz is an expert when it comes to the industry of skating, he knows all the prices. He would love to have a skatepark in Freiburg because it would earn him a lot of money. Interests I want this skatepark so our teenagers do not have to drive that far to enjoy their hobby, I do not care if it benefits my business or not. How does he Organizes various rallies for his agenda and is the core of the Skatepark 4 Freiburg movement. Desperate to find a sponsor. Fritz tries to be the leader oft he skatepark movement. He seems himself as the headskater and speaks fort hem at the hearings. Skatpark4Freiburg

ADDITIONAL PEOPLE (SUBJECT TO HIGH PARTICIPATION) Busdriver Quantity: one to two students Info: Mr. Otten is 47 years old and lives in Bötzingen. He drives the earliest SBG Bus to the main station. Interests: My Bus is sacred to me, and those skaters donʼt treat it well (dirt on the seats, graffiti on the windows) I want them all to f*** off. We should build a skatepark which is not close to the main station. How does he Mr. Otten writes to the local newspaper and goes to city council meetings so he can get in touch with its members. He is also actie in the trade union (=Gewerkschaft) ver.di and speaks for a lot of other busdrivers. He freaks out easily.

Social worker Quantity: one tot wo students Personal Info: Mr. Günnel is 45 years old. The city hired him to work with its troubled teenagers. Interests I want a skatepark tob e build close to the city centre or a youth center. Otherwise I will loose control over my teenagers because they skate in the suburbs or in other cities. How does he Social workers want to include everybody. Mr Günnel will talk to each interest group to ensure that no one feels separated. He knows and likes all skaters in Freiburg. Only the skateshopowner is a little bit suspicious to him. He sees himself as the leader of the skaters and their speaker.

Safe neigbourhood group Quantity: 1 2 students Personal Info: Mr. Adams retired a few months ago. He is very well known and respected in St.Georgen, just like a secret mayor. Being a courageous person, Mr. Adams takes action against all people who cause trouble, especially skaters. He founded the initiative to look after HIS part of town. Interests: Whether this park is built or not, those people MUST ask me for permission. How does he He works against skaters by writing letters tot he press. He also constantly visits politicians when they re in his area. Mr. Adams likes talking to the press but not to teenagers. He is afraid that his part of town will experience a loss of young families.

Club president Quantity: 1 2 students Personal Info: Mr. Gröhl is 55 years old and has been living in Freiburg since he was born. He is working in Media Markt and raises four children on his own. Interests: How does he Additional Info: If we build a skatepark, I will move away. With this park, I can close my sports club, because all teenagers will just skate and do nothing else. Me and my kids enjoy football, and we think a football field would be better than a skatepark. Mr. Gröhl is afraid of acting against the skatepark openly; instead he supports anyone who seems to be against it. He likes to stay in the background. He knows many important people in town and alot of young people play in his sports club.
