2 kanderactivewinter17/18 welcome index KISC - The World Scout Centre Lord Baden Powell believed the best way to achieve happiness was to bring happiness to others. He also believed that by exploring nature, working in the patrol system and learning by doing, young people would be able to develop themselves and become active citizens of the World. KISC is B-P s dream come to life. We live true to his beliefs and, through our programme, we encourage Scouts to develop and be agents of peace and positive change throughout the World. 3 kanderactivewinter17/18 www.kisc.ch 3 about us Kandersteg in winter is a magical experience. From mid December until late March, the snow descends and the Alps become a winter wonderland. Kandersteg is located right in the middle of the action, in the perfect position to enjoy a wide variety of winter activities. The village has two small, quiet downhill ski areas the perfect place to learn to ski or snowboard. With over 70km of marked tracks, it is also one of the leading Swiss resorts for cross country skiing. These cross country ski tracks, as well as winter hiking and snowshoe trails, pass right by our front door. Kandersteg also has a 3.5 km sled run, plus you can try ice skating at the local ice rink. You can even simply relax in our traditional Finnish wood-fired sauna. In winter there are many special events going on in Kandersteg, including the Dog Sled World Championships and the Belle Epoque week, where Kandersteg turns the clock back 100 years, with a costume party, wooden skis and much more. Contact Hours Our Reception is the main place for you to contact to make a booking, or to ask questions about an existing booking. 6 kanderactivewinter17/18 general information Booking and Conditions Booking requests can be made on our website. After receiving your request for accommodation, we will check availability and make a provisional booking. If your request is unavailable we may offer you alternative dates or alternative accommodation. Once a booking is made, you will be asked to make a prepayment by a specified date to secure your reservation. This prepayment is due a month after your booking request, or a year before arrival for longer term bookings. You can only make programme, catering and equipment bookings after we have received your prepayment. Scouts and Guides will be given priority during our high season. Booking Cancellation Fees Take care with reservations: every wasted space is a disappointed Scout. If you cancel more than 90 days before arrival, half the prepayment will be reimbursed. If you cancel within 90 days of arrival, the prepayment will be kept. If you reduce the amount of participants within 90 days of arrival, an admin fee of CHF 25.- per person will be charged. Reductions in the amount of overnights within 90 days of arrival are also subject to a cancellation fee; the maximum fee is equivalent to the total cancelled overnights at full price. If you cancel or make changes to catering, meals will be charged in full with less than 24 hours of notice. For full details see our General Terms and Conditions. Website - www.kisc.ch Our website contains information about the Centre and has many useful tools to help you plan your visit here. Check out the photos to see our various accommodation layouts, read about our exciting winter activities, look at the different ski runs at the resorts around Kandersteg, or check out what the Staff have been up to. It also contains our online booking form - you can use this to book your stay with us. The website has more information on catering, accommodation and activities as well as information on how to become a member of Staff working here at our Scout Centre, details of upcoming events and all the latest news from the Centre. Insurance Please remember that the Alps, and mountain activities, can be dangerous. It is your responsibility to ensure that you and your group are fully prepared for all the activities that you intend to undertake, both in terms of fitness and equipment. The Centre s insurance does not cover you or your group against accidents that may occur during your stay. Emergency rescue in the Alps is often made by helicopter, so please check your insurance policy carefully and make sure that it covers all rescue and medical costs. Weather in Kandersteg Wintery weather can be expected in Kandersteg from any time in November through to May. Most ski resorts and Gondolas are open from mid-december to mid-march, depending on snowfall. If you are travelling with your own transport, then vehicles need to be prepared with winter tyres. See our kit list on page 8 to prepare for any kind of weather.

www.kisc.ch 7 travel information Travelling Kandersteg is centrally located in Switzerland and is well connected by road and by Switzerland s world famous train network. By Train Easily located from most European countries with routes via Bern, Basel, Geneva or Brig. For timetables and prices visit www.sbb.ch. Swiss trains are fast, clean and efficient, and often the cheapest way to get to KISC. The Centre is about 25 minutes walk from the village train station. A local bus runs hourly during the high season from the station to the Centre and is free when wearing a Scout scarf. The Centre can provide luggage transfers from the station during office hours, if booked in advance, for CHF 30.- per run. By Plane The nearest international airports are located in Geneva, Zurich, Basel, Bern and Milan. Zurich and Geneva airports have their own train stations and the Swiss train system is punctual and easy to use. By Coach The Centre works with a local coach company that can provide good prices for coach trips in Switzerland. Whether it is a return transfer from an airport, or a day trip to a city, coach transfers offer peace of mind and convenience. For large groups, the price can often be cheaper than the train. Contact the programme department with details of the transfer (flight numbers, dates, group size) to arrange a quote. By Road The European motorway network reaches Spiez 30 minutes drive north of the Centre. From the south, take the car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg. Please note there are limited car and coach parking facilities at the Centre. If you will travel by Swiss motorway you must purchase a vignette for CHF 40.-. Scout Transfer Ticket Discounted rail tickets are available to Scouts visiting KISC. These can be purchased from the Switzerland Travel Centre (STC) in London, and can either be posted to you, or collected upon arrival at Basel, Geneva or Zurich airports. These tickets can offer up to 44% off standard priced tickets. For more information, and to purchase these and other international tickets, please visit www.kisc.ch/stc-train.

8 kanderactivewinter17/18 programme information The Programme Staff The Programme Staff work year-round in the Reception at KISC. We have tried and tested our activities and know about many of the possibilities in and around Kandersteg. You can contact us at programme@kisc.ch. Get in touch if you have any questions about specific activities or about our activities in general as well as sending us your activity bookings. Please use your booking number in all correspondence. Whether you want to come alone or as part of a group, if you want a full programme or just a little advice, we are here to help! Activity Cancellation Charges We have lots of groups wishing to do activities; once an activity is booked, we have to turn other Scouts away. Occasionally groups do not let us know of changes or cancellations; this leaves empty spaces, and is unfair to other groups. To avoid this and encourage realistic activity bookings, we charge a fee for changes & cancellations with less than 7 days notice. This fee is CHF 5.- or 50% of the cost of the activity per person, whichever is larger. Changes or cancellations within 48 hours of the start of the activity will not be refunded. This applies to all KISC activities advertised in this brochure. If the activity is run by an external company, different cancellation policies will apply and you may have to pay in full. Let us know of any changes about your activities well in advance of arrival. Be Prepared We want to give our guests the best possible experience here at KISC. Preparing yourself and all your Scouts for your visit to Switzerland is an imporant part of this, and so we have designed some Pre-Arrival activities that can be run by you during your regular Scout meeting! To access the material required, please visit: www.kisc.ch/beprepared winter kit list Hiking / Skiing Equipment Our activities will take you outside into the Alpine winter which can be unforgiving. It is therefore essential that you and your entire group have correct equipment. If you do not have what we consider to be suitable equipment for one of our activities, then you will be unable to participate. Waterproof winter trousers & jacket Thermal underwear & warm clothes UV/sun protection cream Sun glasses or ski goggles Warm hat and gloves Full water bottle - minimum 1 ltr Re-usable lunchbox Waterproof hiking boots Good hiking / skiing socks Helmet if skiing or sledding Booking Activities Once you have paid your booking fee, you will receive a programme order form. Winter activity bookings open September 1st, 10:00 CET. Our activities are booked on a first come, first served basis, so please start planning your activities as soon as possible, and before September 1st. If you do not book in advance, we may not have staff available to run your desired activities. Please note the minimum ages and group sizes for activities. We require a leader or responsible adult over the age of 18 to be present for all activities. This leader is counted towards the total group size.
