TRAINING CHOICES YOU MUST MAKE -PMI has developed training options so that you can make the best choices on the amount of time and money you spend to qualify for your license. The elective course options you select really depend on your current skill level and ability to successfully complete the other eighty-one (81) assessments while onboard your ship. Applicants with weak or marginal watch-standing skills should seriously consider our full Twenty-week Bridge Watchstanding Training & Assessment Option, or supplement with elective courses such as, Watch-keeping, and/or Shiphandling. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? With few exceptions, the Coast Guard Policy Letter 11-07 has put the burden of learning back on you, the mariner. You may save money by not taking approved training, but will you be able to stand a competent bridge watch as a new mate? You need to choose all of the mandatory training courses and any of the optional courses you need, to complete any Assessments of Competency; or to better prepare for your Coast Guard License examinations.
