Will Wade Head Coach @wwadelsu 1st Year at LSU 5th Year as a Head Coach Frank William Will Wade was named the 22nd head men s basketball coach at LSU on March 20, 2017. He comes to LSU after a two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans in a most unique way for an introduction of a Tiger coach -- at a special media event held in the middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 21 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here. We are going to have players, staff members, everyone in our program is going to be committed to doing what it takes to make LSU the best basketball program that it can be. We are going to have unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a firstclass fashion. We are going to be a hardworking team that represents this great university that represents this great state, Wade said. LSU and its fans are not looking for a rebuilding program, but taking the foundation and making it solid again a change of culture that gives the program a look of consistency yearafter-year. Wade, one of the youngest coaches in Division I at 34, but one of the most energetic showed his recruiting chops early with a class for the 2017-18 season that was ranked 16th in college basketball in the composite recruiting rankings. Wade s recruiting chops and promotional ideas has created a buzz in the pre-season that hasn t been seen too often and the Coach has done his part, speaking most of the summer on the Tiger Tour and to student groups making sure they feel a part of the program. Coach Wade has been seen on the night prior to football game visiting with folks in the RV lots and on the first day of school was out in a golf cart picking up students and giving them a lift to opening day classes. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. The Rams were 28-8 over his two years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, posting 14-4 records both years. The team was 25-11 in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league, one-game behind Dayton. Under his tutelage, guard Melvin Johnson earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2015-16 while Je Quan Lewis represented VCU on the 2016-17 first team. Mo Alie-Cox was named to the A-10 Defensive Team in both 2016 and 2017. Wade, age 34, previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from 2009-13. VCU was 113-37 during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA First Four all the way to the Final Four in Houston. During his tenure as a Ram assistant, Wade, who worked closely with VCU s post players, saw the Milwaukee Bucks select center Larry Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft (now with Cleveland). In addition, Wade played a major role in the development of current NBA players Troy Daniels (Memphis) and Briante Weber (Charlotte). Weber owns VCU records for 3-pointers in a single season and career steals. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. His first Mocs squad went 18-15 in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since 2008-09 and the 12 wins in league games was the highest total since 2010-11. The team made the school s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in 2014. Also that year, Z. Mason became the first Chattanooga student-athlete to win the conference s Defensive Player of the Year award. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since 2004-05. He finished his two seasons there at 40-25 and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was 24-40 overall and 13-23 in SoCon play. In his four years as a head coach, he has a combined record at Chattanooga and VCU of 91-45 and THE WADE RECORD 55-15 in conference play with three post-season appearances. Wade s reputation, where ever he has coached, is a person who is a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in 2009. That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Much like at VCU, he was Amaker s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of.500 or better in the program since 2001-02. Wade had a hand in the development of future NBA standout Jeremy Lin and assembled a top 25 recruiting class during his stay. Wade s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations (2006-07) and Graduate Assistant (2005-06) after four seasons as a student manager (2002-05). There he worked for coaches Larry Shyatt (2002-03) and Oliver Purnell (2004-07). In eight years on coaching staffs at Clemson, Harvard and VCU, the teams had a record of 177-97 with six postseason appearances (2005-13). Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason, and the couple has one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth. /----OVERALL---/ THE WADE FILE Birthdate: Nov. 26, 1982 Age: 35 Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee High School: Franklin Road Academy College: Clemson, 2005 Wife: Lauren Deason Child: Caroline Elizabeth COACHING EXPERIENCE 2005-06 - Clemson, Graduate Assistant 2006-07 - Clemson, Director of Operations 2007-09 - Harvard, Assistant Coach 2009-13 - VCU, Assistant Coach 2013-15 -UT-Chattanooga, Head Coach 2015-17 - VCU, Head Coach March 22, 2017 - LSU, Head Coach /---CONF.---/ YEAR SCHOOL W-L PCT. LAST TIME OUT LSU 69, #11 TEXAS A&M 68 -- COLLEGE STATION -- Jan. 6, 2018 Tremont Waters is a freshman and Wednesday night he wanted to help LSU down nationally-ranked Kentucky in Baton Rouge and he had a three-point shot in the final seconds to possibly tie the game. It didn t work and LSU lost 74-71. Saturday, Waters put LSU on its back in the final half minute and took advantage of o missed free throws around two 30-foot plus three-pointers that ended up giving LSU a 69-68 win over No. 11 Texas A&M in College Station. LSU won its second straight road game, its first in the league since the opening road game a year ago at Missouri. The last time LSU knocked off a team ranked higher on the road was No. 9 Alabama in 1992. Down 68-63 after Tyler Davis hit a jump shot with 19 seconds to play, Waters came down and hit a long-range 30-foot three that cut it to 68-66 with 12 seconds left. LSU called timeout and on the ensuing inbounds, fouled Davis who was a 66 percent free throw shooter for the year. He missed both free throws and Aaron Epps got the rebound and Coach Wade called time out with 3.0 to play. Brandon Sampson inbounded the ball to Waters past the 28-foot line on the side of the LSU bench. He took one dribble and got a semi-leaning line shot up over TJ Starks and a closing Tonny Trocha-Morales, who had guarded the inbounds pass. Waters watch as the shot rattled home, sending the LSU bench and a large group of fans into a frenzy, to give the Tigers a 69-68 lead with 0.3 showing on the clock. The officials reviewed the time and added four-tenths to give the Aggies 0.7 to play with. Trocha-Morales tried a full-court pass to Davis who caught the ball on the left side of the lane but his turn and throw shot drew nothing as the horn sounded. Waters led LSU with 21 points and four assists, making 5-of-9 treys, while Skylar Mays had 11 points and six assists, with Aaron Epps also getting 11 markers. Epps had eight boards, while Duop Reath had 10 rebounds to 2017-18 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

go with his nine points. LSU shot 40 percent for the game (46.2 percent in the second half) and 12-of-28 from the arc for the game. A&M GAME STARTS WILL WADE ON NEXT HUNDRED Just a couple of games after winning his 100th game as a college head coach on Dec. 29, the next 100 started with a bang on Tremont Waters winning three at A&M. Number 100 happened on the first try in the 71-61 win at Memphis. The win occurred in his 148th career game as a Division I coach. Wade came to LSU after two years at Chattanooga (40) and two years at VCU (51) with 91 combined wins and his ninth win at Memphis made it 100. Coach Wade is among the youngest head coaches in the major conferences this season: Name School Birthdate David Padgett Louisville 2/13/1985 Will Wade LSU 11/26/1982 Richard Pitino Minnesota 9/16/1982 Mike Boynton, Jr. Oklahoma St. 1/17/1982 Lavall Jordan Butler 4/16/1979 TIGERS GET FIRST WIN OF SEASON OVER NATIONALLY-RANKED TEAM After losses to Notre Dame in Maui and then last week at home against Kentucky, the A&M game marked the first win against a nationally-ranked team this year. The Aggies were ranked No. 11 in the AP poll and the Tigers are now 6-10 all-time against teams ranked No. 11 The win was win No. 79 by LSU when unranked against a ranked team in the history of the AP poll (79-254, 23.7%). WATERS BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF ANOTHER THREE AGAINST AGGIES Radio analyst and former head coach John Brady was one of the first ones to remember this when Tremont Waters was burying two 30-footers against the Aggies on Saturday Back in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, it only took one to advance LSU to the Sweet 16. In Jacksonville, Florida, senior point guard Darrel Mitchell took a pass from Garrett Temple and after three dribbles took a step back three to take the lead, 58-57, with 3.9 to play. A&M failed to score and LSU would eventually get to the Final Four. WATERS EARNS SECOND SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONOR For Tremont Waters, the play at the end of the Texas A&M game certainly helped him earn his second SEC Freshman of the Week honor in a season that has already seen him three times get recognition on SportsCenter s Plays of the Day. The 5-11, 167-pounder averaged 19.5 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals against 17thranked Kentucky and at No. 11 Texas A&M. Waters made two treys from 30-plus feet in the final 12 seconds to beat Texas A&M Saturday in College Station. The first came with LSU down five and 12 seconds left. The game winner came after A&M missed two free throws and an LSU timeout with 3.0 to play. Waters hit a 35-footer over two Aggies with 0.7 on the clock to give LSU the win. Overall, Waters is averaging a team best 17.4 points a game, 3.6 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.43 steals. He is fourth in the league in scoring, first in assists and steals, ninth in field goal percentage (48.4%) and fourth in three-point percentage (43.7%). Waters first earned FOW honors after his opening game in which he scored 27 points, the most by a freshman in an opening game since 1976. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas tweeted the following on Sunday: LSU s Tremont Waters is a terrific player, and one of the best freshmen in the country. What he did against Texas A&M at the end of the game was simply ridiculous. Houdini in short pants. Last year, LSU shot 45.1 percent from the field. LSU is continuing to try to improve its field goal percentage defense which after 13 games stands at 43.9 percent, 13th in the conference. However, on the plus side, last year opponents shot over 47 percent against the Tigers. LSU has now won seven straight games when shooting over 50 percent, dating back to last season. LSU INSIDE THE ARC For much of the non-conference season, LSU was 60 percent or better shooting from inside the arc, but LSU is now at 58.4 percent, 10th in the country according to TeamRankings.com. Mississippi State is the next SEC school at No. 11 at 58.3%. LSU s 14-game total is way up from last season when LSU shot 50.2% inside the arc. LSU WITH 25 TREYS IN TWO ROAD WINS While LSU has been shooting the ball better from the arc everywhere, in the last two road games, the Tigers made 13-of-26 trey attempts in the 71-61 road win at Memphis (12/29) and 12-of-28 (1/6) in the 69-68 win at A&M. The 13 treys against Memphis tied the fourth most three-pointers LSU has made in a single game and the 11th time LSU has made 13 or more three-pointers in a single game: 17 vs. Vanderbilt 12/29/16 17 at Tennessee 3/1/03 16 vs. Auburn 2/26/03 13 eight times (Last: at Memphis 12/29/17 The Tigers have helped themselves in their three-pointers made this year, 123 three-pointers for the season. LSU is averaging 8.8 threes a game, up from last year when the Tigers made 6.3 a contest. In the last couple of games, LSU has made up a wide difference in opponents three-point makes, now having a +4 on opponents (123-119). Opponents have taken 21 more attempts. LSU s 37.5 percent shooting percentage from the arc is sixth in the league. LSU last year shot 33.6 percent for three. FREE THROWS It did look like A&M would take care of LSU all at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes as the Aggies were 11-of-15 and LSU had one lone front end of a one-and-one attempt. But in the second half, LSU was 9-of- 12, while A&M was just 8-of-15 in the last 20 minutes, including two misses in the final seconds. Earlier in the year, LSU was on the mark against Samford (11/16), making 19-of-20 for the game, including 16-of-16 in the first half. LSU s lone miss came in the first half with 2:38 to play after LSU made its first three of the night. It marked the fourth time since 1966-67 for LSU to shoot at least 95% when attempting at least 20 FT s in a game: 11/16/2017 W, vs. Samford 105-86; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%) 2/21/2009 W, vs. Auburn 79-72; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%) 2/2/2008 L, at Alabama 72-81; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%) 2/4/1989 L, at Miss. State 79-96; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%) After nine games, LSU was at an incredible 78.4 percent at the line, but now LSU is 74.4 percent (195-262), fourth in the league. That is still way ahead of the 69.6 percent that LSU shot at the line during the 2016-17 season. LSU is making 13.9 free throws a game LSU has made 21 more free throws than opponents and has 16 more attempts. OVER 20 ASSISTS AGAIN For the third time this year, LSU was over 20 assists in the UNF game (12/22), this time recording 26 assists for the 43 buckets it made. LSU had 29 assists in the Samford win in November and 22 assists in the win over UT-Martin, also in November. LSU has had five games of 30 assists or more, the last coming in December 2002. LSU is averaging 15.6 assists per game, sixth in the league. Waters leads the team in scoring average at 17.2 points per game and leads the SEC with an average of 6.2 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game. He is fifth in the league in scoring average and eighth in field goal percentage (72-of-148, 48.6%) His 33-of-78 from three-point range percentage of 42.3 percent is also seventh in the conference. career after a huge scoring night against UNCW in LSU s 97-84 win on Dec. 10. The 6-11 native of Australia made a career high 13 field goals, including one three, and added 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with a career high 30 points. Now Reath posted his second highest scoring game of his career with 24 points against Kentucky and now finally has his first double double of the year (eight over two years) after grabbing 11 rebounds. Reath was 11-of-17 in the game including 2-of-3 treys. He also had two assists and two blocks in 35 minutes. Against A&M, Reath just missed back-to-back double doubles with nine points and 10 rebounds. Reath has started 10 games and is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game and 5.2 rebounds a game. Reath is 72-of-124 from the field or 58.1 percent and that is second best in the SEC In the first two conference games, Reath is averaging 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. THE OPPONENT ARKANSAS Arkansas comes into the game 1-2 in the league and 11-4 overall after falling in Auburn on Saturday, 88-77. Jaylen Barford led the Razorbacks with 21 points, while Anton Beard scored 11 and Daryl Macon 10. Mike Anderson is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Razorbacks. In his career, he is 6-7 against the Tigers. This is the first of two meetings between LSU and Arkansas with the Razorbacks up 35-28. Arkansas has won three straight, including the last two in Bud Walton Arena. Arkansas leads in games in Fayetteville, 19-6, with those six wins coming in Bud Walton. LSU is 8-7 in the last 15 meetings. SKYLAR MAYS GOOD ON AND OFF THE FLOOR It all fits in doesn t it pre-med major; 4-plus GPA and starting guard on the team. Last year it was starting point guard for 25 of 31 games. This year it s still somewhat starting point guard because in Coach Wade s system, he believes in having two point-guard types out on the floor to smoothly run the offense through. So far the numbers are good as he is averaging 12.1 points per game, 4.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Mays has had nine games in double figure scoring, including eight-of-the-last-10 games. In the last six games he has had a combined 29 assists and 12 steals Mays has posted at least five assists in 12 games in his career, five this season including six against A&M on Saturday. In the last eight games, he has hit six or more field goals four times Against Memphis, he hit 4-of-7 three-point field goals, stopping a string of 2-of-14 shooting from the arc over the four games previous to that. Mays hit his only trey attempt against Kentucky and was 2-of-7 on Saturday. For the season, he is 20-of-58 from three-point range (34.5 percent), but he has been a consistently good force from the free throw line, making 33-of-38 for the season (86.8%) For his 45-game career he is 102-of- 123 or 82.9%. EPPS DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTED BY BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE DOUBLES After a 26 point, 16 rebounds game against Houston on Dec. 10, Epps came back with another double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against SFA on Dec. 13. In the two games, Epps scored 42 points and had 26 rebounds. He played 59 minutes, made 13-of-24 field goals, 4-of-8 3 FGs and 12-of-13 free throws. His night of 26 rebounds and 16 rebounds marked just the third time since the start of the 2010-11 season, according to sports-reference.com, that an LSU player has had 25 points or more and 15 or more rebounds in a single game. Epps is also the only one of the three to be on a winning side in their game. Aaron Epps (12-13-17) --- vs. Houston (W) Ben Simmons (1-9-16) at Florida (L) Jordan Mickey (1-31-15) at Miss. State (L) 26 points, 16 rebounds 28 points, 17 rebounds 25 points, 20 rebounds Epps has started the last 10 games for the Tigers and his first two SEC games were good ones as against Kentucky the senior posted 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including one trey. At A&M, he was 4-of-7 from the field with three of those three-pointers for 11 points with eight rebounds. He is averaging 10.2 points per game and a team best 6.2 rebounds. Epps has made 50-of-95 field goals for 52.6 percent with 13 treys. In the two SEC games, he is averaging 12.0 points per game Epps, from Ball, Louisiana, is one of those rare quantities in college basketball these days a four-year letterman. JC TRANSFER DARYL EDWARDS Daryl Edwards is beginning to find his niche in the LSU system after only playing about a third of the time in the three games of the Maui Invitational. But from there his minutes increased and he has started the last five games for the Tigers. He has also been in double figures in four games, including 15 against UT Martin (11/29) and the three games prior to Christmas versus Stephen F. Austin (10), Sam Houston (11) and 10 vs. UNF. AT A&M, Edwards had eight points, hitting 3-of-6 shots, including a trey. The junior college transfer is averaging 19.4 minutes a game and 6.2 points a contest, up from 3.6 points leaving Maui. For the season he is 28-of-56 from the field with 19 treys. SCORING BREAKDOWNS CLASS PTS PCT.
