A 1960 graduate of Purdue University, Spoo has coached the Panthers to 9 NCAA FCS playoff berths and eleven Top 25 national rankings. Spoo is currently tied for fourth among longest tenured active coaches at the NCAA Division I level and is fifth alltime in FCS playoff appearances. TENNESSEE TECH HEAD COACH WATSON BROWN A veteran coach with more than 26 years of collegiate experience, Watson Brown is in his 4th season as the head coach of Tennessee Tech. A native of Cookeville, Brown played college football at Vanderbilt before later embarking on his coaching career. Brown is in his second stint in the Ohio Valley Conference having coached at Austin Peay in the late 1970 s. He has a 16-24 all-time OVC mark while his head coaching mark stands at 109-176-1. He was the head coach and athletic director at UAB before taking over at TTU in 2007. He has a 15-25 record at TTU. SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH Tennessee Tech comes into the contest with a 2-4 record having recently won its first OVC game of the season. The Golden Eagles are only five points away from being 3-0 in the OVC and in the thick of the conference chase. Wide receiver Tim Benford is the conference s top wide receiver with 80.2 yards receiving yards per game. Tre Lamb leads the OVC in pass efficiency and is 16th nationally in that category. The defense is lead by free safety Marty Jones with 9 tackles per game. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY October 16, 1982 - Playing its first game as a ranked opponent at the NCAA Division I level, Eastern Illinois held off a fierce challenge from Indiana State that gave the 20th ranked Panthers a 16-12 victory. The win snapped a 14-game win streak in the series by the Sycamores as Dave Strauch hit three field goals including one with 8:08 left in the fourth quarter to seal the win. PANTHER LOSING STREAK REACHES EIGHT Eastern Illinois had its current losing streak reach eight games on Saturday with a 35-7 loss at Eastern Kentucky. It marked the fourth straight loss in the series with the Colonels and set the Panthers off to an 0-6 start on the season. EIU is one of five teams that are currently 0-6 to start the year. EIU joins Valparaiso, North Carolina A&T, Savannah State and Mississippi Valley State on that list. Dating back to last season, EIU is currently third on the active list behind Valparaiso at 15 straight losses and North Carolina A&T at nine straight losses. The Panthers are looking to end that streak sometime in the coming weeks as they play at Tennessee Tech on Saturday night before hosting Murray State and Austin Peay in back-to-back weeks.

October 16, 2010 Eastern Illinois at Tennessee Tech Page 3 www.eiupanthers.com EIU QUICK HITTERS TALE OF THE TAPE Eastern Illinois last started a season with an 0-6 record in 1977. The Panthers finished that season 1-10, losing 10 straight. Nick Nasti finished last Saturday s game at Eastern Kentucky with six tackles. It marked the first time this season that the senior linebacker had not reached double figure tackles. He now ranks 5th in the nation with 11.83 tackles per game. Senior Rashad Haynes is slowly closing in on a spot in the Eastern Illinois career top ten for solo tackles. Haynes enters the weekend with 133 career solo tackles. He needs 23 more this season to catch Donald Thomas for 10th place on the career chart. Cameron Berra knocked home an extra point on Saturday at EKU increasing the freshman kickers season scoring total to 15 points. Berra leads the Panthers in scoring with Von Wise and Jimmy Potempa tied for second with 12 points each. Berra is looking to become the third straight kicker to lead EIU in scoring. Eastern Illinois was held to just 29 total yards rushing on Saturday at EKU. It marked the fourth time this season that EIU had been held under 100 yards rushing as a team. The 29 rushing yards is the lowest output for an EIU offense since Oct. 9, 2004 when the Panthers were held to 25 yards rushing by Eastern Kentucky during a 49-6 loss. While Eastern Illinois has been hurting itself with turnovers this season, the one area EIU has been improving in has been penalty yards per game. The Panthers currently rank 8th in the nation in the fewest penalty yards per game with only 34.5 yards per game flagged against them. The Panthers offense has only scored 67 total points so far this season. EIU had similar offensive struggles in 2003 as the team opened their first six games scoring only 65 points during a 1-5 start. The one win was a 27-0 victory over Division II California (Pa.). EIU would break out in game seven winning three of its next four games scoring 27, 29 and 34 in those victories. Lorence Ricks hauled in his first touchdown pass of the season on Saturday at EKU. Ricks last score was a rushing touchdown in last year s playoff game at Southern Illinois. Ricks also had four kick returns for 113 yards at EKU as he ranks 30th in the nation in kick return average at 26.89. It marked the second time this season that an EIU wide receiver has finished a game with more than 100-yards receiving. Erik Lora also posted a 102 yard effort this year at UT Martin. Lora currently ranks 23rd in the nation and second in the OVC with 6 receptions per game. Whittaker is 63rd nationally and fourth in the OVC at 4.6 catches per game. Kevin Cook had an off day by his standards as the senior punter averaged 44.8 yards per punt during four punts at EKU. Cook is averaging right at 45 yards per game and currently ranks second in the nation in punting average. He has been a special teams weapon for the Panthers with two punts over 70 yards including an 86-yard punt against Southeast Missouri which earned him National Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Transfer running back Jake Walker saw his first significant playing time of the season on Saturday at EKU as the sophomore had six carries for 18 yards against the Colonels. Walker who transferred from Toledo just prior to the start of the season has played almost entirely on special teams with six carries for two yards in the Panthers previous games. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Large came in for a couple of plays in the final series at EKU on Saturday night. Large has been impressive in his two stints as the back-up quarterback going 13-of-22 for 159 yards and one touchdown. He has one interception which occurred in the Jacksonville State game in the final seconds. As a starter Large had been 39-of-76 for 282 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Sophomore Artavious Dowdell had a solid week on the defensive line for the Panthers as he registered five tackles at Eastern Kentucky. Dowdell had 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, 1 forced fumble, one quarterback hurry and two fumble recoveries. Dowdell now leads the team with two sacks as he was named one of the FCS performers of the week at defensive line by College Football Performance Awards. Speaking of defensive line play senior Spyros Bazigos added two more tackles for loss to his season total at EKU finishing with five total tackles. Bazigos now has 8 tackles for loss on the season as he leads the OVC in tackles for loss per game at 1.33 and ranks 33rd nationally. While points off turnovers is usually a statistic reserved for basketball the Panthers have had their fair share of giving up points off turnovers this season. To date EIU has allowed opponents to score 72 points off of turnovers this season while the Panthers themselves have only been able to score 13 points off of turnovers they have created. Overall EIU ranks 41st with 11 turnovers gained however the Panthers rank second in turnovers lost this season with 21. Only Texas Southern with 23 committed turnovers has more this season.

October 16, 2010 Eastern Illinois at Tennessee Tech Page 5 www.eiupanthers.com GROSSMAN, KNOLHOFF CAREERS DONE Eastern Illinois took a permanent hit to its banged up offensive line this week with news that Ryan Grossman is done for his career following a visit with specialist at Northwestern. Grossman was listed as a medical disqualification joining fellow offensive lineman Seth Knolhoff who was listed as a medical DQ earlier this season. Grossman started the Panthers contest against Central Arkansas but was injured in that game. A redshirt junior from Glen Ellyn, Ill., Grossman had played in 19 total games for his career. Knolhoff is a redshirt junior from Carlyle, Ill., who played in 10 total games for his career. OVC GAME OF THE WEEK This season the Ohio Valley Conference will feature a weekly telecast of the OVC Game of the Week. The package kicked off with Austin Peay visiting Tennessee State and has also featured UT Martin at Murray State. Eastern Illinois played in two back-to-back OVC Games of the Week hosting Southeast Missouri on Oct. 2 and playing at Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 9. The games will be televised by local affiliates in each of the OVC markets and produced by WAZOO Sports based in Kentucky. In addition many of the games will be carried on ESPN3.com (formerly ESPN360.com). Junior Willie Henderson was named to the squad as a center after earning second team All- OVC accolades at right guard last year. It will mark the fifth straight season that EIU has had a new player start at center. Three players were selected on the defensive side of the ball. CJ James was a first team All-OVC selection last year while defensive end Perry Burge was a second team All-OVC pick a year ago. Nick Nasti rounds out the preseason honorees at linebacker as the senior led EIU in tackles. During the spring workouts two players changed positions as Alain Marcelin and Shane Kelly both flipped sides of the ball. Marcelin moved from linebacker to fullback, a position he played in high school to give EIU depth at that spot. He had played in 32 games as a linebacker for the Panthers including 9 career starts. Kelly played in just one game as a back-up defensive lineman. In the spring he moved to H-Back/tight end where he will primarily see time on special teams. The Panthers did have a streak of 26 straight games in which they had scored a touchdown snapped in the loss at Penn State in 2009. EIU s longest streak of consecutive games without being shutout was 197 from 1977-1996 which ranks fourth all-time among FCS schools. After not playing a Big Ten school for more than 100 years of football, EIU will have faced a Big Ten opponent for the fifth straight year. That string will continue next season with a trip to Northwestern set for Sept. 10, 2011. EIU has also signed to play at Minnesota in 2014. TURNOVER STRING starting EIU s defense ended last year ranked 19th in the FCS in turnovers gained with 26. EIU had its streak of 14 straight games with a turnover snapped in the regular season finale against Tennessee State. The Panthers were able to start what they hope will be a new streak with two turnovers against Southern Illinois in the playoffs. The streak continued with a turnover against Eastern Kentucky to stand at 7.

Enrolling in school during the early portion of camp was defensive tackle Tory Squires who will wear No. 96 this season. He played at Gordon Tech HS and originally signed with Ball State in February before being released from that offer. He will most likely redshirt this season. The second is running back Jake Walker a redshirt sophomore from Toledo who enrolled in classes on Aug. 23. He played two seasons at Toledo rushing for 85 yards with a high of 27 yards against Eastern Michigan in 2008. He earned a medical redshirt last year after playing in three games. Walker will wear No. 5 and rushed for 2,609 yards and 46 touchdowns at American Heritage HS in Florida. PANTHERS PICKED SECOND IN OVC Eastern Illinois was picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference race in the preseason Coaches/SID poll. Jacksonville State was picked to finish first with 11 first place votes while EIU was second with four first place votes finishing just six points behind the Gamecocks in overall voting. Eastern Kentucky was third with one first place vote with Tennessee Tech fourth and Tennessee State fifth. JSU, EIU and EKU have been selected as the preseason OVC favorites by each preseason publication and poll. PAYTON HONORED Current New Orleans Saints head coach and former EIU quarterback Sean Payton had his No. 18 officially retired by the Panthers during halftime of the home opener on Sept. 11 against Central Arkansas. Payton was on hand as the Saints opened the season with a Thursday night game on Sept. 9 and then do not play against until Sept. 20 on Monday Night Football. Currently wide receiver Charles Graves wears No. 18 and will be the last EIU player to wear that number. TWO PLAYERS ON FCS SCOUT BOWL LIST Eastern Illinois had two players named to the FCS Scout Bowl list prior to the season opener as seniors Kevin Cook and Rashad Haynes were both recognized. Cook is one of the top punters in the FCS ranks with a career punting average of 41.9 yards per punt. Last season he ranked 9th in the FCS with a 42 yards per punt average. Haynes is the Panthers top shutdown corner with 25 career pass break-ups and 10 career interceptions. He has made 159 career tackles including 115 solo stops. LATEST OPENER SINCE 2004 Most of it is due to the way the dates fall on the calendar but this season marked the latest date EIU had opened a football season since 2004 when the Panthers played their opener on Sept. 11 against Indiana State. The Sept. 4 date stands as the fifth latest starting point to a season in the Bob Spoo era. EIU had openers on Sept. 5 during the 1987 and 1992 seasons and a Sept. 8 opener in 2001. The earliest calendar date for EIU to start a season was two years ago with an August 28 opening date at Central Michigan. EIU is 14-9 in season openers under Bob Spoo.

Large was inserted in the game during a drive that started with 6:22 left in the game after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was forced out with an injury. Large immediately ripped off two long runs to put EIU in business. Jimmy Potempa would score his second touchdown of the day with 5:13 left to play. Following a defensive stand, EIU began its next drive from its own 2-yard line. Large drove the Panthers down the field and hit Erik Lora for a 2-yard strike to bring EIU within one score. Lorence Ricks recovered the onside kick and the Panthers marched to the JSU 25-yard line. Following two incomplete passes, Robinson picked off Large s pass to end the game. Potempa finished with 101 yards rushing while Large was 10-of-19 for 126 yards. JSU scored all four touchdowns rushing with Jamal Young scoring three times in the second quarter finishing with 162 yards. EIU was limited to 29 yards rushing as two of the Panthers four fumbles were on long snaps in the backfield. EIU s lone score of the game came late in the second quarter as Jimmy Garoppolo found Lorence Ricks for a 29-yard touchdown. Cory Leman led the EIU defense with 9 tackles.
