SUU fi nished the regular season 1-3 against SDSU, including its most recent three-game losing streak. The tournament berth is the second consecutive for the Thunderbirds after missing the postseason in 2006 and 2007,prior to a streak of six consecutive years, leading up to the 2006 season. Southern Utah will be looking to return to the championship game for a second consecutive year as well, after falling to Oral Roberts 9-0 during the fi nal game of the tournament in 2008. The Thunderbirds will enter the tournament with an overall record of 26-22 with a great deal of those wins attributed to the strong hitting that has carried the team throughout the season. SUU is averaging.319 from the plate with eight players batting above.300 from the dish. The team has tallied 348 runs to its opponents 320 during the year, including 48 home runs to the opponents 30. The tournament is a double-elimination format with the Thunderbirds opening with the Jackrabbits, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The winner of that game will then advance to play Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action with live stats available through www.suutbirds.com Last Time in the Conference Tournament Southern Utah had to take the diffi cult route to the championship game in 2008 after falling to the Western Illinois Leathernecks 9-6 in the opening round. The loss dropped the Thunderbirds into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament and a game with Centenary in round two. The T-Birds posted a 4-1 victory over the Gents, eliminating Centenary and then fi nally broke through against Western Illinois in the night cap of round two with a 9-3 victory. The win in the evening was thanks to four home runs belted by Thunderbird bats. The run came to an end in the championship game as Southern Utah fell 9-0 to eventual league champion Oral Roberts on Saturday. The Thunderbirds lost head coach David Eldredge and starting pitcher Kyle Melling due to ejections during the game in an emotionally charged contest. Following the game, Mac Nelson, Jacob Noyes and Nick Freitas were each named to The Summit League all-tournament team. Last Time for the T-Birds BROOKINGS, S.D. - May 16 - Southern Utah University baseball suffered a 5-0 defeat in the regular season fi nale on Saturday afternoon as South Dakota State pitching held the Thunderbirds to only six hits during the game. The loss drops the T-Birds to 26-22 overall and 15-7 in Summit League play while the Jackrabbits move to 24-28 and 17-10 in conference play.

Head coach David Eldredge is beginning his fi fth year at the helm of the Southern Utah University baseball team. In 2008, Southern Utah baseball enjoyed one of the most prolifi c years under Eldredge as the team moved into the record books in more than 35 individual and team categories. The records included new standards in every facet of the game from the plate, on the mound and in the fi eld. The team also returned to the conference post-season, but fell in the championship game to Oral Roberts. DAVID ELDREDGE Head Coach Fifth Season Brigham Young, 1984 2007 proved to be a growing year for the coach and the team as youth and a road-heavy scheduled left the team with an 11-45 record. Despite fewer results in the win column, under Eldredge s tutelage six players garnered fi rst-team and second-team all-mid-continent Conference honors. In addition, freshman Bucky Aona garnered honorable mention Ping all-freshman team kudos. Under Eldredge s tutelage in 2006, Southern Utah broke team records for stolen bases (105), stolen bases attempted (142), saves (11) and defensive double plays turned (49), while producing the third-highest win total in the program s history. In addition, Southern Utah s pitching staff posted the third-lowest ERA in school history and the second-lowest opponent-batting average ever. SUU also fi nished 22nd-nationally in stolen bases at 1.94 spg. In 2005, Coach Eldredge led the Thunderbirds to a 26-28 overall record in his inaugural year, a seven-win turnaround, including eight more home wins than the previous campaign. He also guided SUU to its sixth-straight Mid-Continent Conference tournament appearance after his charges fi nished third-overall with a 12-10 mark. Eldredge has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience behind him. Prior to his appointment as head coach of SUU, Eldredge served a four-year stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Brigham Young. At BYU, Eldredge helped lead the Cougars to a Mountain West regular season title in 2001, MWC tournament championships in 2001 and 2002 and two berths into the NCAA regionals. Eldredge also held a similar post at Loyola Marymount from 1996-98, where he was instrumental in bringing in the nation s 16thbest recruiting class as rated by Collegiate Baseball. He was on the bench as the Lions won the West Coast Conference title and earned an NCAA tournament berth in 1998. Eldredge began his collegiate coaching career at Hawaii Pacifi c in Honolulu from 1989-95, where he was a fi ve-time District 29 Coach of the Year honoree in guiding the Sea Warriors to fi ve district championships and fi ve regional berths, while his 1991 club fi nished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Eldredge played collegiately at BYU from 1980-83, where he was an all-western Athletic Conference selection and was voted team captain of the Cougars top-ranked club in 1983. Following his playing career at BYU, he began his coaching career as an assistant at Honolulu s Punahou High School where he coached from 1985-89 and again in 1996. While at PHS, Eldredge served as pitching coach and helped lead the program to three league championships, four state tournament appearances and one state title. Overall, Eldredge has coached fi ve players selected in the top-fi ve rounds of the Major League amateur draft and he was the college coach of former New York Met outfi elder Benny Agbayani. He has also been active in numerous youth baseball programs and has won many national titles at the Babe Ruth and AAU levels. Eldredge was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1979 and was a prep all-american at Punahou High. He was born January 6, 1961 and is married to the former Valerie Albert-Thenet, a former Mrs. Hawaii, Mrs. America runner-up and Mrs. World third runner-up. The couple are the parents of fi ve sons, Kaiana, Kiakahi, Kanai, Koa and Kui.
