Arrive at Alex Walker s Serian a traditional bush camp in the Masai Mara. Having the chance to orient yourself and prepare for three nights exploration in the company of the archetypal warrior, the Masai Moran. We have set aside an exclusive use conservation area of 5,000acres with access to over 500,000 more; this is a walking area though there are game trails to the west of the river on the Koiyaki Lemek Conservancy. A significant area is only accessible by foot and this is how safaris are conducted here. You will immediately notice the difference between a vehicle tour and one conducted on foot. Senses that may have been a little dulled in a car will strain to perceive indications of the wild game that surrounds you. Your perception of the bush will change until you feel an intimate relationship with the environment itself.
A bimble along the river and up the escarpment will reveal a number of quite remarkable sitings. A phenominal game area with significant populations of Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Giraffe, Buffalo, and plains game. Unusual species include side striped hyena and caracal, and tracking is easy in the rich alluvial soil. Walking with Warrior s you will learn how to track, harvest honey, light fires the real way, make bows and arrows and stalk silently to short distances of your prey.
Sleeping out under the stars, the skies appear iridescent sparkling galaxies of stars, great consciousness can be made of this in the company of traditional astronomers. Follow the spoor of an Impala ram in the early morning and track it step by step through its daily routine. Scrounging up fresh acacia pods, alarmed by the leopard, scratching its itchy horns on the trees nearby until there! There he is! Proud horns spiral into the air, an alarm bark and he stands stock-still. Three hours of tracking rewarded by a close glimpse, magnificent! Satisfying the soul.
A three to four day hike can bring you to the far side of the Olololo Escarpment, through the primordial forests of the Nyekwere. In the company of porters and Masai Warriors you will explore the cool forests and streams of the highlands. Home to Buffalo and Elephant and a number of different monkeys the forest is a unique environment. The warriors will help teach you rudimentary use of a bow and arrow, collection and use of herbs, traditional cures and traditional folklore.
Porters will carry the camp equipment and you will seem to be part of the early exploratory trade caravans of old. Complete comfort albeit basic. The pace will not be hard but basic fitness is a must, those that want to push themselves will be afforded every opportunity with competitive warriors at hand this can be quite stimulating for those in search of wild fitness. After 4 nights out you will be raking the horizon through experienced eyes, out across the koiyaki plains towards the famed Masai Mara. A car from Serian will pick you up and together with your Warrior guides you will enjoy exploring the game rich locale of the Masai Mara.
