Kenya Unveiled DAY BY DAY ITINERARY safaris in style with private guide info@deeperafrica.com www.deeperafrica.com Safaris in Style The horizon stretches farther than you ve ever seen. Flying through the Maasai Mara under bluebird skies, you pass thousands upon thousands of wildebeest. Suddenly your guide spots a cheetah in flight and you re off, chasing the predator as he chases his prey. Arriving as the cheetach settles down for a meal, you can hear his breath panting and imagine the pounding of his heart it matches your own. This safari shows Kenya at its best; unlike adventures that feature National Parks where vehicles are confined to the road, the reserves and conservancies of Kenya allow travelers to roam wherever the wildlife leads. Your guide and your vehicle are your own for the duration, giving you the wildlife viewing you seek and getting you from camp to camp in comfort. All of this makes for an exhilarating and up-close experience Photo credit: Encounter Mara

Seven hundred fifty of these elephants consider Samburu their home range, with 66 known elephant family matriarchal groups and approximately 100 bulls. Bordering Samburu is the Ewaso Nyiro River, a permanent source of water to the local game. When the river is high, elephants are a common sight bathing all along the river, their young playing and the squeals, rumbles, and trumpets thrilling their human observers. Elsewhere, the dusty plains are broken by the Koitogorr ( uplift in the language of the Samburu tribe) and, lying far beyond, the flat head of the reddish Ol Olokwe Mountain, as well as many other ranges of hills and mountains further north. Turning back you can also see the peaks of Mount Kenya to the south, dwarfed by distance. Photo credit: Wendy Stone

Education is a fundamental part of every Deeper Africa safari, and so only the most experienced (and personable) guides are chosen for our travelers. Their knowledge of Kenyan wildlife runs deep, and you learn myriad details you never imagined; animal identification, behaviors, spotting and tracking skills, and the latest leading animal research. This is experiential learning at its best. There are reference books on East African mammals and birds in your Land Cruiser for your use. Photo credit: Lewa Safari Camp/Stevie Mann

In a journey that dates back through time, these herds of animals (currently estimated at 1.25 million) follow the seasonal rains, traveling north into the Mara from Tanzania and back again. In the Maasai language, the word Serengeti means endless plain, and this vast savannah grass land extends southward into Tanzania to form one of the world s largest wildlife refuges. Located at a crossing point on the Talek River, Rekero offers the closest possible vantage point to see the herds thunder across the waters as they make their way north every July through November. River crossings can be treacherous, as the swift currents, steep banks, and awaiting crocodiles create perilous obstacles. Each tent allows for views of the Talek River below while the famous Mara River is also an easy drive from camp. Photo credit: Al Edgar
COMMUNITY AND CONSERVATION INITIATIVES SUPPORTING KENYAN PROJECTS MAA TRUST AND KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST Deeper Africa makes a bed night contribution for each of our travelers to the Maa Trust and Kenyan Wildlife Trust. These programs are doing great things to support Kenya s people and wildlife. The Maa Trust works to increase the benefits of wildlife and conservation to Maasai families so that they appreciate, and contribute to the protection of, wild animals on their land. The Trust also promotes small business startups & micro finance schemes, measuring these ventures success by not only how much money is earned, but also on the impact that these earnings have upon the lives of the business owners, workers and the community. The women who create and work in these projects are investing in clean drinking water for their homes, solar power (limiting the use of firewood and its environmental impact) and their children s education. Kenya Wildlife Trust was formed to strengthen the connection between conservation and tourism. The Trust contributes to a variety of conservation and community development projects in key wildlife areas, such as predator monitoring. In 2013, the Trust established the Mara Cheetah Project and Mara Lion Project, since they view the protection of predators as critical to Kenya s future. Predator populations in Kenya are under threat due to increasing habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict across the country. The country s economy relies heavily on healthy ecosystems, robust wildlife populations, and the presence of large carnivores, specifically lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards and wild dogs.
