Pupils use the information on the sheet to answer questions. Task 2 Native American Homelands - Working in groups students are to research 4 different homelands of the Native Americans using the fact sheets provided and present it on sugar paper. Students are only allowed to use 10 words for each homeland. They can use as many symbols/drawings as they want. Full instructions on PP. OR Use the information to individually complete the tables. Task 1 - Life in a tepee. Use page 28-29 of Native Peoples of North America text book to fill in the sheet. Task 2 Use template and symbols sheet to make own tepee. Need A3 paper, colouring pencils, sellotape and straws. Who made the best tepee? 3. To know how Native Americans survived Describe a Buffalo Hunt Explain what the buffalo was used for Image - What does this tell us about Native Americans? Read source B. Use this information and the clip to write a description of a buffalo hunt. Ext task on PP. Task 3 What was the buffalo used for? Draw a table, like the one on the PP and use pages 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33 to complete it. Make a decision. 4. Know how the Native Americans used buffalo skin. To produce a story on a replica buffalo skin Recap how the buffalo was used by Native Americans Students to make replica buffalo skin using the template. You will need brown paper, candle wax and colouring pencils. Instructions are on the PP. Share buffalo skins and keep for wall display Create a wall display of what life was like on a Native American camp. Include: Religion, Women Children, Warriors and weapons and the importance of the Buffalo 5. Know how Native Americans communicated Interpret Native American symbols to explain how they communicated Images of modern signs on PP what do they mean? Task 1 Students to think of a day from a recent weekend or holiday. They should then try to draw what you did on that day just using pictures. Swap drawings and try to interpret them. Task 2 Draw and complete table to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of sign language. Task 3 Try to interpret the sign language used on a Native American calendar. Do you think that historians should guess about events from one source like this? Discuss.

What does John Smith tell Pocahontas that his people want to do with the land? Feedback Task 1 - White People Move West True or False? Students to read the information and answer the questions true/false at the bottom of the sheet. Task 2 How The Whites Changed the Plains? Students to use the information sheet to find the positives and negatives of how the white settlers changed the Plains. The following areas will be looked at: Settlers Disease Horses Bison New Ways Were the white settlers and Native Americans ever going to get along? Debate and discuss.

9. Investigate how Native Americans adapted to life on a reservation Explain how the lives of Native Americans changed on a reservation. Identify positives and negatives Solve the cryptogram and use the information to answer the questions below: 1. What was an Indian reservation? 2. Who gave the Native Americans the land? 3. Who was in charge of the land? 4. Why did the government want the Native Americans to give up hunting? Why were the Native Americans angry? Direct teaching using the information on the PP. Task 1 - Problems with reservations. In groups of 4 look at pages 5657. Look and write down a list of problems/issues that the Native Americans had with reservations. Task 2 - what was it like living on a reservation? Working in groups research what life was like on a reservation. Life on the reservations.
