Brookings Marathon Fun Facts The Brookings Marathon started in 1970, making it one of the 25 oldest marathons in the United States - older than Ne York City, Chicago, and Grandma's. Hal Higdon, no knon for his marathon training guides, on the event in 1972. 1975 marked the first female finisher. In 2018, 40% of marathon entries are omen. Hoever, omen account for nearly 65% of entries in the half marathon and relay. In 2000 an ice storm forced the marathon indoors, ith all 26 miles run on the SDSU indoor track. The men s marathon record as set in 1979 by Randy Fischer at 2:22:29. The omen s marathon record as set in 1980 by Jane Wipf at 2:48:26. Almost 400 volunteers bring their enthusiasm every year to make the Brookings Marathon happen. 40% of entries are from South Dakota. The field ill include runners from 30 states. 2018 Field Ages of 2018 marathoners range from 18 to 71. The combined field for all races ill total nearly 1,000 runners. 5
Course Safety Who to Contact in an Emergency Medical Aid Stations There are seven medical aid stations along the marathon course, and a medical field station at the finish. First Aid stations are located at miles 7, 10, 12, 16, 18, 21, 24 and finish. Look on the course map for the red cross symbol. Police Officers Brookings Police Officers ill be located at all major intersections here traffic intersects the course, in addition to patrolling the course. Volunteers There are hundreds of volunteers on marathon eekend. Most are not associated ith the event except for one eekend a year, so understand that they may not have ansers to all your questions. Hoever, in an emergency, do not hesitate to go to them for assistance as they may kno ho to get help quickly. Some ill have communications equipment as ell. Rules of the Road Avoid interference at the Relay Exchange Points, especially the Mile 4 Exchange. Vehicles should avoid race course hen possible. The course should be crossed only hen runners are not present. Bikers are encouraged to stay off the course and atch for spectators as much as for runners. Spectators must stay clear of the course and off the roads to avoid interfering ith the participants. Help keep the course beautiful by not littering. Respect the property of others hile on the marathon route. Hold animals on a short leash. Keep them aay from runners and be considerate of others. Watch your children at all times. There ill be hundreds of participants and spectators at the events. Lost & Found items ill be returned to the bandshell at Pioneer Park. 6
