HIGHT C MOORE PAPERS AR 69 Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives By Joanna Wilkey June, 2007 Updated June, 2012 1

Summary Main Entry: Hight C Moore Papers Date Span: 1884 1956 Hight C Moore Papers AR 69 Abstract: Hight C Moore was a Southern Baptist clergyman and editor. His papers include correspondence, photographs, clippings, Bibles, manuscript drafts, Bible study material, books, speeches, and biographical information. Size: 35 linear ft. (69 boxes) Collection #: AR 69 Historical Sketch Hight C Moore was born January 28, 1871, in Globe, a small community in Caldwell County, North Carolina. Moore attended Globe Academy and Wake Forest College, where he received his B.A. in 1890. That same year, Moore was ordained by Globe Baptist Church and received his first pastorate, at the Baptist church in Morehead City, N.C., where he served until 1893. Hight C Moore resigned as pastor in Morehead to attend the seminary in Rochester, New York, but not before marrying Laura Miller Peterson May 2, 1893. From the end of 1893 until 1904, Moore held several pastorates throughout North Carolina. He became actively involved in the North Carolina State Baptist Convention where he held several positions, including assistant recording secretary from 1898 1907 and Sunday School secretary from 1904 1907. In 1907, Moore was offered a position with the Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee, and resigned from the Sunday School Department in North Carolina. Before leaving North Carolina, he was offered the job of editor of the Biblical Recorder, North Carolina s Baptist state paper, and turned down the position in Nashville. Moore served as editor of the Biblical Recorder until 1917. He was a strong supporter of education and returned to Wake Forest College to earn his D. D. Degree. In 1914, Moore was selected as Secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention and held the position until 1946. In 1917, the Sunday School Board in Nashville offered Moore a position as co-editorial secretary with E.C. Dargan. This time Moore took the job in Nashville, and his duties included being the managing editor for the board and also the editor of Home Department Magazine and the weekly publications of the Sunday School Board. In 1927, Dargan resigned from his position, and Moore became the editorial secretary of the Board. While in Nashville, Moore was involved with many publications including his Points for Emphasis (1918 1943), which was a Sunday School Lesson commentary. Moore served 2

as editor of The Teacher for sixteen years and wrote numerous articles, pamphlets, and books. He served on the International Sunday School Lesson Committee for nearly twenty years, and, from 1929 1943, Moore gave a weekly broadcast for the Committee on Nashville s WSM. Moore retired from the Sunday School Board in 1943 and moved with his wife to Ridgecrest, North Carolina, where the couple s only son resided. Moore died in Ridgecrest May 24, 1957. Scope and Content Note The Hight C Moore Collection consists of 35 linear feet of material and is located in 69 boxes. The collection contains material dating from 1884 to 1956 and documents Hight C Moore s career as a pastor and as an editor for the North Carolina Baptist Sunday School Board, The Biblical Recorder, and the Southern Baptist Convention. The collection includes Moore s correspondence, clippings of articles written by Moore for numerous publications, clippings written by other authors for various publications, a scrapbook from Moore s trip to the Holy Land in 1927, Bibles that belonged to Moore and his wife, and his poetry. The collection also contains biographical files on various individuals, including Clifton J. Allen, Austin Crouch, E.C. Dargan, A.C. Dixon, E.Y. Mullins, and L.R. Scarborough. Photographs of family and coworkers are found in the collection, with numerous images of the Ridgecrest Conference Center in North Carolina. There are also Bible commentaries by Moore. Each book of the Bible is located in its own folder, and the folders are filed in the order they appear in the Bible. The collection is largely composed of Hight C. Moore s other writings, including his articles, manuscript drafts, sermon notes, blackboard outlines from his time as a Sunday School teacher, and his Points for Emphasis. Included are notes and research Moore collected for his work, A Thirst for God. The collection also includes material related to the Baptist World Alliance, the history of the Southern Baptist Convention, International Council on Religious Education, arrangements for the Southern Baptist Convention, and the executive committee of the SBC. The breadth of Moore s influence in the Southern Baptist Convention is also reflected in the individuals, many of whom were leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention, with whom he corresponded. Those people include J.B. Lawrence, Kathleen Mallory, Victor Masters, E.C. Routh, John R. Sampey, William L. Poteat, J.W. O Hara, L.L. Gwaltney, B.W. Spilman, George W. Truett, I.J. Van Ness, and Rufus Weaver. Norma Moore, daughter-in-law of Hight C Moore, donated the collection to the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives in 1960. The collection is divided into three sections: Subject Files, Correspondence, and Books, notebooks, and scrapbooks. Each series is arranged alphabetically. 3
