February 2014 Latitude N 30 21.65 - Longitude W 89 05.35 New Year s Eve Party! Jan 31, 2013 Changing Of The Guard

David Wilson 1802 15th Street Gulfport, MS 39501

Well here we are in 2014 and as the old idiom goes, time flies when you re having fun! My tenure as a Committee Chair, Board Member, and Flag Officer has truly been an enjoyable experience. Equally it is an honor and a privilege to serve as your 2014 Commodore. As a volunteer organization there are so many people to thank for such a successful 2013. It is hard to single anyone out without fear I might leave someone out but here goes: Our finances are in order under the direction of our Treasurer and Rear Commodore James Kaigler, Finance Chairman Emile Koury and hard work by our staff. We had a wonderful year in the House operations. We have cut expenses producing our Log Sheet by doing it in house and we had a net increase in membership for the year. Way to Go Dickie! Entertainment provided great parties and super decorations. We had record numbers in our junior sailing and swim team program and the list goes on. As a member we should thank each volunteer that helped make 2013 so successful. I would also like to say thank you to our outgoing Flag Officers and Board members for their service: Commodore Dr. Michael Seicshnaydre, Fleet Surgeon Dr. Scott Gioe, George Boddie, Mark Loughman, Beaux McCormick and Buddy Hammett. Your insight and knowledge was an asset to the club. Out with the old and in with the new as we welcome our new Flag officers: Vice Commodore John Webb, Rear Commodore James Kaigler, Fleet Captain George Boddie and Fleet Surgeon Dr. Bryan Leatherman; New 2 year Board members, Mike Joyner, Paul Terrell, Skipper Kalil and Ms. Shannon Weatherly. I know they will do a great job! January 15th I had the pleasure of addressing the GYC Ladies Auxiliary. What a passion these ladies have for our club. They were not only interested in the operations of the club but are so enthusiastic, supportive and ready to lend a helping hand. Through the years they have helped with kitchen equipment, banquet supplies, sponsored sailors in various coaching clinics and the list goes on. We are fortunate to have such an active group that is willing to work. Thank you, Ladies. Club participation and membership are the life blood of our club. For 2014 the Board has announced our membership incentive as follows; for the first 50 new members the initiation fee will be $500 and for the next 50 the initiation fee will be $1000. This incentive is for Resident, Nonresident and Senior member categories. The Junior membership structure will remain as is. Over the last several years we have been fortunate to have had positive growth in membership. I hope 2014 will remain the same. Please invite your friends, relatives and co-workers down to the club and show off what we have to offer. As we go into 2014 there will be many events to take part in. Please follow the web site, www.gulfportyachtclub.org for daily updates. It you have not, please sign up for the E Blast. Also, the calendar has been updated, and as events are firmed up, more will be added. By the time most of you will be reading this it will be February. For those of us who are hunters, we have put our guns up and are now focusing on the upcoming boating/ fishing season. Be on the lookout for the dates of our adult sailing class hosted by Past Commodore George Schloegel and all the other activities that give us the excuse to get out on the water. Again, I look forward to serving you as your Commodore this year. If there is anything we as a club need to do let me know. Safe boating & see you at the Club, Greg Pietrangelo Skimmer: June 2-27 9:00am - 9:30am 3:00am - 3:30am Swim Team Practice Schedules Junior: May 12-29 3:15pm - 4:00pm No Friday Classes June 2-27 9:30am-10:15am or 3:30pm-4:45pm No Friday Classes Senior: May 12-29 4:00pm - 4:45pm No Friday Classes June 2-27 10:15am-11:00am or 4:15pm-5:00pm No Friday Classes Swim Team Sign Up Forms can be found on the GYC Website or in the office. Traditionally the Ladies Auxiliary sponsors a Breakfast with Santa, and in December 2013 we continued with this worthy project. The breakfast was attended by over a hundred children, parents, grandparents and of course, our special guest Santa. Each child in attendance brought a new unwrapped gift for the less fortunate. A generous thank you needs to be extended to Marian Hewes and her committee of elves: Dee Ann Stafford, Jamie Van Kirk, Christie Batson, Janie Bertucci, JoAnn Blount, Gayle Christian, Delia Kaigler, Lee Kaigler, Mary Frances Martin, Carol McDaniel, Nancy Pittman and Barbara Smith for helping to make lasting memories for our families. The Ladies Auxiliary held its first meeting of the New Year on January 15, 2014. A meal hosted by Mary Joyce Laycock and Jeanette Guel was the first item on the agenda. Tables were decorated with a nautical theme consisting of wooden sailboat center pieces listing past commodores names. In addition, wine bottles dressed as ladies waiting for the fleet to arrive were all adorned with hats in memory of one of our past members, Mary Ann Nicholson. Bridge winners were announced with first place going to Helen McDonald and second place winner Nancy Wheeler. Our honored guest Commodore Greg Pietrangelo, the new 2014 Commodore, then addressed the group and outlined some of his programs for the upcoming year promising continued support for the Ladies Auxiliary. The Commodore s final objective of the meeting was the installation of new officers for the 2014 Ladies Auxiliary. Lynn Ward.. President Tonya Rode...Vice President Jo Ellen Mechatto.. Secretary Judy Karl...Treasure Kathy Hage.Parliamentarian Judy Seicshnaydre. Devotional Chairman Incoming President Lynn Ward then addressed the members and reminded everyone that this is the year for updating GYC Ladies Auxiliary membership directory. If you know of any additions or corrections please let one of the following committee members know: Jo Ann Van Atta, Nancy Wheeler, Deane Nelson, Sandy Schmidt, Camille Williams, Candace Ozerden, Pattye Warren, and Dottie Long. They have all graciously volunteered their time to assist on this project. If you are not on the permanent list for reservations, notify Secretary Jo Ellen Mechatto at 228 864-2976 or email to pcm1052@cableone.net by Monday February 17th. In addition, Jo Ellen requested that if you know any member that might be ill, hospitalized, or has suffered a loss in the family to please notify her. A calendar reminder: the next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be held on February 19th at 11:30 am. Our program will be Nooboo Designs presented by Kathryn Taylor Gray. If you would like to see or have a special program in mind for presentation please bring your request to the Board for discussion. President, Ladies Auxiliary Lynn Ward Warm Weather brings plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Club. I have been working with the Entertainment and House Committee to provide a full calendar for the entire family for 2014. Through April you can look for our 3rd Annual Super Bowl & Chili Cook Off, February 02 (kids Activities 3rd Floor), Valentines Dinner Friday, February 14, Mardi Gras Party, March 01, St. Patty s Day Sunday Brunch, March 16, Asian Night, Wednesday April 02, High School Sailing Drawdown, April 12, GYC Crawfish Boil, April 19 and Easter Sunday Brunch, April 20th. Details for all events will be provided on our web site www.gulfportyachtclub.org, eblast and flyers posted around the club. The 2014 Board of Directors has implemented another Membership Drive under the direction of our Membership Chairman Dickie Dunaway. Our $2,000.00 Initiation Fee set by the Board of Directors will be reduced to only $500.00 (Resident and Non-Resident) for the first 50 proposed members accepted and paid. Over the past two years with our aggressive membership drive incentives we have taken in 166 new members and net 99. In this economy for the private club industry these were two very successful membership drives. Membership is the key component to any Private Club. Our targeted goal is to keep reaching for the pre Katrina membership count and that waiting list the club knew for over 75 years. Reach out to your family, neighbor s, colleagues and friends and invite them out to club and offer them the membership incentive. If you need information or a membership app emailed to you please give me call my ext is 301 and I ll send you one. If you are planning a Private Party, Luncheon or Dinner please call early as our dates fill very quickly. Simply call the club at 228-863-6796, 306 and check a date and get on the books. Let our professional staff make your party a special one! General Manager Steve Chatelain
