Description of the Tosca 36 by Designer Angelo Lavranos. The wetted surface area of the Tosca 36 to DWL, including keel & rudder is 39 sq meters. The Tosca 36 was designed in 1978, the first one launching around 1979. Fourty have been built, most by Fred Scholtz Marine/Tosca Marine in Cape Town. Four or five were built (out of a second mould), under license from Tosca Marine, by Z Craft at Empangeni, in KwaZulu Natal. I know of at least two having circumnavigated, and many others have gone distance cruising. I would characterise the boat as a medium /light cruiser with excellent sailing characteristics in a breeze, particularly tradewind reaching. Conversely the firm sections carry a wetted surface penalty, and being a light boat the rig is of moderate size, making the boat slightly "sticky" in light airs. I have an IOR rating certificate off the protoype giving a rating of 26.3 ft. This is close to the Old One Ton rating of 27.5 ft. I expect her to sail better than her rating in good breezes (15 knots +) from a fetch to a run. In light airs and hard on the wind the old One Tonners would beat her. The boat is viceless and pleasant to sail, and they have turned in good passage times. The space is good and the boat is well liked by the owners. She is an easy and viceless boat to sail and very comfortable at sea. Owners Comments I sailed more than 25,000 miles from South Africa to Thailand crossing the Indian Ocean and from Thailand to New Zealand sailing thru Celebes Sea, and from New Zealand back to Thailand sailing thru the Arafura Sea and Indonesia. From all my passages she made speeds from 4 to 6.2 knots in average. On the passage from Philippines to PNG in light wind we were running the engine 1400 rpm to reach an average speed of 4 knots. On the passage from Salomon s Island to Vanuatu, sailing with reduced sails setting we got suddenly hit by 45 knots of winds. We hove too; suddenly everything was calm, just the wind howling in the rigging, and all the hanging lines for heading. Having free water under us, we just kept drifting for 12 hours waiting for the elements to calm down. We could use the galley to cook our meals and rest in the saloon reading books. On the passage from New Caledonia to Australia It was easy to get 6.2 knots average having 25 knots established winds from aft with 2 reefs in the main and half the Genoa rolled in. 3 days in the row we made more than 165 miles per day. In the Indian Ocean one night I got caught in a squall with full sails set wing on wing, she was doing 8.8 knots flying away. I was just sitting in the cockpit looking at the wind pilot steering her thru the elements and watching.
The centre cockpit is comfortable and protected at sea; great for sundowners at anchor.. She has a warm inside with plain wood furniture that makes you feel at home, not like in a RV. For her length she is very spacious with a friendly. The aft cabin is spacious, quiet and well aired and compared to modern designs, she has a high storage capacity. The big fuel tank gives you a range of more than 1,000 miles so little need for jerry cans on deck. At anchor she is quiet. The anchor winch with his 80m 10mm chain gives you a secure and easy handling anchorage. The salt water tap keeps the chain clean. From the day I got her, I ve never taken short cut on her maintenance. That s probably also why I never had serious problems and so the new owner will have a yacht ready to go.
