UTSA SERIES RECORD UTSA holds a 19-17 advantage over the Bearkats in the all-time men s basketball series between Sam Houston and the Roadrunners. UTSA ended a nine-game SHSU winning streak with an 83-74 upset of the No. 3 seeded Kats in the first round of the Southland Conference post-season tournament in Katy last March. Sam Houston had swept the regular season series with a double overtime 89-86 win at San Antonio and an 89-67 victory in Huntsville. While Sam Houston has won their last three games with UTSA in Johnson Coliseum, overall the Kats are 8-9 against the Roadrunners in Huntsville. UTSA s last victory in Johnson Coliseum was a 68-65 win in 2004. BEARKATS OFF TO 6-0 START IN SOUTHLAND ACTION Sam Houston stands 6-0 in Southland play this year, the first time their 23 years in the conference that the Bearkats have won their first six league games. The Bearkats were 6-1 after six games in both 2003 and 2009 and stood 7-1 after eight contests in 2009. LAST GAME In a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in Southland Conference play, it was the Sam Houston State Bearkats who emerged on top of the standings. The Bearkats got off to a slow start, hitting just one of their first 11 shots as they watched the Islanders storm out to a 15- point lead at 19-4. After the two teams traded 3-pointers, the Kats got hot. SHSU scored the next 15 points to tie the game at 22. Lance Pevehouse got the run started with a 3-pointer. Josten Crow capped the 15-0 run with a lay-up to tie the game. A 3-pointer by Corey Allmond gave the Kats their first lead of the game 1:42 to play in the first half. The Bearkats took a 30-29 lead into the locker room, closing the half outscoring the Islanders 26-7 over the final 10:34. They picked up right where they left off in the first half. The Kats never gave up the lead, eventually building it to 10 with 6:50 left to play in the game. UT has won 269 games in the 12 seasons since 2000 while the Bearkats have totaled 204 victories. MARLIN WINNINGEST SOUTHLAND ACTIVE COACH Sam Houston s Bob Marlin is only the second head coach in the history of the Southland to post more than 200 coaching victories. The Bearkats record of 214-128 in Marlin s 12 seasons since his first year in 1998-99 stands as the best in the Southland over that time span. Mike Vining, head coach at Louisiana-Monroe from 1983 to 2005 compiled a 383-291 record from 1983 to 2005 to rank as the Southland s winningest head coach. Ironically, Vining is the man who gave Marlin his first coaching job after graduation from Mississippi State in 1981. Marlin served as Vining s graduate asssistant as NLU won the 1982 TransAmerica Conference championship. KATS ARE SOUTHLAND PRESEASON FAVORITES Sam Houston State received the most votes and most first place votes in the annual Southland Conference preseason head coaches poll. The Bearkats were tabbed to repeat as Southland West Division champions with 61 points and seven first place votes. Defending 2009 regular season and tournament champion Stephen F. Austin was selected as the East Division favorite with 58 points and five first place votes. The Bearkats have finished among the top three teams in the Southland standings six of the last seven seasons. Sam Houston won the Southland Conference regular season in both 2000 and 2003. In 2003, the Kats won the Southland tournament to advance to the NCAA tournament against Florida. BACKCOURT DUO NAMED PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND The senior backcourt duo of Corey Allmond and Ashton Mitchell were named as two of the five first-team players on the 2010 Preseason All-Southland Conference team. Both also have earned Southland Player of the Week honors this year. IMPRESSIVE NON-CONFERENCE WINS Since Bob Marlin became Sam Houston head coach in 1998-99, the Bearkats have produced a 7147 record against non- Southland Conference competition - the best non-conference mark in the league in those 12 seasons. Sam Houston has played -- and defeated -- such top teams as Missouri, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Baylor, Auburn, Houston, New Mexico State, Fresno State, Oral Roberts, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Central Florida, Saint Louis, Rider and Loyola-Marymount.- The Bearkats have appeared in the NCAA Tournament, the Preseason NIT (reaching the quarterfinals in November, 2005) and ESPN Bracket Busters. SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT The top two teams from both divisions, plus the next four remaining teams with the best records will advance to the Merrill Center in Katy for the annual post-season SLC tournament to decide the Southland s NCAA playoff representative. The tournament begins on Wednesday March 10 with four quarter-final games. The semi-finals will be played Thursday night March 11. The finals will be televised live on ESPN2 on Saturday March 13. Sam Houston will be seeking to earn its 13th berth in the Southland Post-Season Tournament. The Bearkats have been tournament participants for seven consecutive years. Sam Houston won the Southland tournament championship in 2003, finished as runner-up in 2006 and has won a spot in the semifinals five times. BEARKAT ACADEMICS Seven Bearkat basketball players have earned Academic All- Southland Conference honors a total of 17 times since the 2006 season. Further, the Capital One Bank Southland Conference Men s Basketball Student Athlete of the Year each of the past three seasons has been a Bearkat. Forward Ryan Bright received the honor in both 2007 and 2008. Last year, center Barkley Falkner was selected. The annual award is presented to the individual in Southland basketball who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Falkner produced a 3.91 overall grade-point average in his three years at Sam Houston as an accounting major. Bright posted a 3.59 overall GPA in his four-year career as a kinesiology major. www.gobearkats.com - 4

Bob Marlin Sam Houston State University Head Men s Basketball Coach Sam Houston head men s basketball coach Bob Marlin has directed the Bearkats to more victories than any other Southland Conference team during his 12 years at SHSU. Marlin is the second man in the history of the Southland to total more than 200 wins as a head coach in the Southland. Since 2000, only one of the 21 NCAA Division I men s basketball teams in Texas (the UT Longhorns) has won more games than Sam Houston. Inheriting a program that had not finished higher than sixth in the league and posted only two double digit victory seasons in more than a decade, Marlin has directed the Kats to five 20-plus victory seasons (and double digit wins in each of his 10 years as head coach. Sam Houston State stands as one of only three teams in Southland Conference history to put three or more 20-plus victory seasons back-to-back. Twice Marlin has earned Southland Conference Coach of the Year honors - in 2000 after directing the Kats to their first Southland Conference championship and in 2003 after Sam Houston s second title in four years. In 15 seasons as a head coach, Marlin has produced a record of 305 victories and 145 losses. He rolled up a 123-35 record as head coach at Pensacola Junior College. In 1993, he was National Junior College Coach of the Year after directing Pensacola to the NJCAA National Championship. Marlin has served as an assistant coach at Alabama, Marshall, Houston Baptist, and Louisiana-Monroe. Under Marlin, the Bearkats have produced more non-conference intersectional victories than any other Southland Conference team. During Sam Houston s 10-0 start in 2007-08, Sam Houston received votes in the Associated Press national top 25 for the first time since the Kats moved up to the NCAA Division I level. Marlin received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coach of the Year honors in 1993 following Pensacola s national title (the first ever for a Florida junior college). He won 100 games at Pensacola faster than any coach in school history. Twenty-seven of his players at Pensacola received scholarships to play at four-year schools. Marlin was inducted into the Florida Junior College Hall of Fame in March, 2007.
