UK WILL #COMPETEFORKYLIE IN 2015 This season, the UK gymnastics team will dedicate each meet to Kylie, who has stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma. Kylie is almost 3 and was diagnosed a year ago. Her mom was a gymnast for Tim Garrison when Garrison coached in California. This season, the Wildcats will #CompeteForKylie in each meet, and encourage their opponents to join the fight as well. More information can be found on Facebook at Facebook.com/PrayersForKylie1 2015 SCHEDULE NOTHING TO LAUGH AT With eight top-25 teams on s 2015 slate, including each of the top four ranked in the preseason coaches poll, the Wildcats face one of the most grueling schedules in the nation. Among top-25 teams, CollegeGymFans. com has tabbed UK s schedule as the secondtoughest in the country, while RoadtoNationals. com ranks the Blue and White s schedule as the third-best strength of schedule among all NCAA teams. Seven of the SEC s eight teams enter the season ranked nationally, with the eighth, Missouri, receiving votes. RANKED IN THE PRESEASON, AGAIN will begin the 2015 season ranked in the top 25 for the fifth consecutive season, as UK earned a No. 22 ranking in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll. With the secondhighest preseason ranking in program history, the Wildcats have been ranked to start the season in each of head coach Tim Garrison s four seasons in Lexington. UK is one of seven Southeastern Conference teams ranked in the preseason top 25, headlined by top-ranked Florida, the defending co-national champions. LSU is third while Alabama is fourth and Georgia seventh to round out the league s place in the top 10. RETURNING, AND INCOMING, STARPOWER UK returns nine letterwinners from the recordsetting 2014 team and lost four. Among the returners are seniors Kayla Hartley, Shelby Hilton, Shannon Mitchell and Sara Shipley. Hartley and Mitchell were both All-SEC Team honorees in 2014. The Wildcats welcome five newcomers, freshmen Katie Carlisle, Brittany Furuyama, Cori Rechenmacher and Sydney Waltz to the team in 2015 along with junior Khadijah Hudson, a Hebron, Ky., native and transfer from Eastern Michigan. THREE EARN ALL-SEC HONORS IN 2014 Audrey Harrison, Kayla Hartley and Shannon Mitchell were named to the All-SEC Team last season. Harrison earned All-SEC honors for the first time in her career thanks to a 39.125 all-around score at the SEC Championships, the second-highest in the first session. Hartley was named All-SEC for the second time in her career after a 9.850 on uneven bars and Mitchell earned her first career award thanks to a 9.875 on vault along with a 9.850 on balance beam. RECORD SCORES AT HOME had unparalleled success at home in 2014. The friendly confines of Memorial Coliseum yielded a 6-1 record for the home team, the best mark since 1991 when UK also went 6-1. The mark includes a win over then- No. 15 Penn State to open the season, along with victories over No. 11 Auburn and No. 22 California, all upsets. With the wins have come record-breaking scores. In Feb. 28 s win over AU, s 49.650 on floor was a new school record by 0.200 points, while its 196.275 team score is the fifth-best in program history and the second best at home. A week later, a 196.150 went down as the third-best at home in team history. RECORD CROWDS AT HOME In UK s four home meets in 2014, the Wildcats averaged 3,265 fans in Memorial Coliseum. The average, ranked eighth nationally, marked the best home attendance for UK since at least the 1998 season, when records became available. Since 1998, the Wildcats have never averaged more than 3,000 fans. RECORD-BREAKERS ON FLOOR UK s most consistent and highest-scoring event in 2014 was floor exercise. was ranked 18h nationally with a 49.185 RQS, led by a program-record 49.650 on Feb. 28. s highest event scores in all but three meets came on floor, while four of UK s top five team scores also were on floor exercise. The Wildcats also racked up eight meets with all six scores recorded at a 9.700 or better. SEC DOMINANCE Across all sports the Southeastern Conference is one of the toughest in the country, and gymnastics is certainly no exception. With seven of the SEC s eight teams ranked in the top 25, including four in the top five, the league is primed for another season of elite competition. SEC schools have won nine of the last 10 NCAA Championships, including the last four, but the league s dominance is nothing new. Eighteen national titles have been won by SEC schools since the inaugural NCAA Championship in 1982. Florida captured its first title in 2013 before it shared the crown with Oklahoma last season to join Alabama and Georgia as national champions from the SEC. The SEC has placed at least two teams among the top six in 31 of the possible 33 NCAA Championship events. A record five SEC teams advanced to the NCAA Super Six team final in 2009.
