The Green Knights, who defeated Colby 4-3 a day earlier in a national semifinal contest, finished the season with a 27-4-1 record. The Green Knights also won their 14th Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs championship. The Coach: St. Norbert coach Tim Coghlin (UW-Stevens Point, 1989) is 556-142-53 through 25 seasons in De Pere. The Green Knights are 412-73-36 in the last 17 seasons. Coghlin s five national championships are the second most in Division III history, while his nine national title game apperances are tied for the most. NCAA Tournament Appearances: St. Norbert has made 18 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, all coming within in the last 22 seasons. The Green Knights are 31-13-1 all-time in NCAA competition, have reached 12 Frozen Fours, and have won 22 of their last 26 NCAA Tournament games. St. Norbert won national championships in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2018, and was the national runner-up in 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2016. The Green Knights are just one of three programs in NCAA Division III history to have won consecutive national championships (UW- Stevens Point 1989-91 and Middlebury 1995-99 and 2004-06). About the Green Knights: St. Norbert finished the season 27-4-1 overall after winning its fifth NCAA Division III championship with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Salve Regina on March 24 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Senior forward Tanner Froese, named the Frozen Four s Most Outstanding Player, led the Green Knights with 14 goals and 20 assists for a team-high 34 points. Sophomore forward Dominick Sacco had 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points. Freshman forward Peter Bates totaled 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points, while freshman forward Keegan Milligan had 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points. Junior forward Steven Phillips had nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points, while junior forward Riley Christensen had six goals and 15 assists for 21 points. Junior goaltender T.J. Black was 27-3-1 with a 1.44 goals against average and.940 save percentage. Freshman Ryan Bontorin was 0-1 with a 1.63 goals against average and.917 save percentage. St. Norbert was 37-for-166 (22.3 percent) on the power play and was 118-for-129 (91.5 percent) on the penalty kill this season. Tourney Tidbits: St. Norbert finished this year s Frozen Four with a glittering 22-4 record in its last 26 NCAA Tournament games. The stretch covers its last eight NCAA Tournament appearances dating back to 2008. The Green Knights went 3-0 in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2018 en route to winning NCAA Division III national championships all four years. St. Norbert was 3-1 during the 2010 tournament, losing 2-1 in double overtime to Norwich in the national title game. St. Norbert went 4-0 in 2012 to win its third national title. wins are the second-most all-time in the 35-year history of the tournament. Middlebury is 34-7-2 all-time in 14 appearances for the most wins in tournament annals. D is for Defense: St. Norbert finished the season with the No. 1-rated defense in Division III, allowing just 1.47 goals per game. Only three times in Division III history has a team had a scoring defense for the season under 1.45 goals per game. St. Norbert holds the Division III record at 1.34 in 2007-08. Norwich had a 1.39 mark in 2009-10, while St. Norbert had a 1.44 ledger in 2013-14. The Green Knights have led the Division III in scoring defense six times (2007, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2018). St. Norbert also boated the nation s top penalty kill at 91.5 percent. It is the fourth time the Green Knights have led the country in penalty killing, joining 2003, 2008 and 2011. St. Norbert outscored its opponents 51-13 during its 12-game winning streak to finish the season. All-American Boys: For the first time, St. Norbert had three players named first-team All- America by the American Hockey Coaches Association in the same season. Junior goaltender T.J. Black was a first-team selection for the second consecutive season. Senior defenseman Sean Campbell earned his first first-team honor after being a second-team choice in 2017. Senior forward Tanner Froese s All-America honor was his first. St. Norbert has had a first-team AHCA All-America choice for 21 consecutive seasons - a Division III record. Oh Captain My Captain!: Senior forward and captain Tanner Froese saved the best for last, with his performance at the Frozen Four leading to being named the tournament s Most Outstanding Player. Froese had two goals in the 4-3 national semifinal win over Colby, including a key shorthanded goal late in the second period. Froese then recorded the primary assist on all three goals in the 3-2 doubleovertime win over Salve Regina for the national championship. Froese joins B.J. O Brien (2010 and 2011), David Jacobson (2012) and Joe Perry (2014) as the tournament s Most Outstanding Players from St. Norbert. The award was reinstituted at the 2009 Frozen Four. Pung Patter: Junior forward Brad Pung cemented his name into St. Norbert hockey history with his goal at 9:48 of double overtime to beat Salve Regina 3-2 to claim the Green Knights fifth national championship. Pung, one of eight St. Norbert players to play in all 32 games this NCAA Championship Coaching Appearances Only nine coaches in NCAA Division III history have coached in at least three NCAA Division III championship games/series since the start of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1984. St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin is tied for first all-time on the list with nine title game appearances, going 5-4 overall with two of the losses coming in overtime. Black finished the season second in Division III in goals against average at 1.44 and save percentage at.940. Black also set a St. Norbert season record for goaltender wins at 27. Black surpassed Kyle Jones 25 wins in the 2006-07 season. Black also has 12 career shutouts, which is third-most in school history. Jones had 25 from 2005-08, while David Jacobson posted 20 whitewashings from 2011-15. Coghlin Count: St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin owns a record of 556-142- 53 through 25 seasons. Coghlin is in 17th place all-time in wins for NCAA men s ice hockey coaches across all divisions. Coghlin s 556 wins surpassed legendary Michigan Tech coach John MacInnes 555-295-39 mark from 1957-82. MacInnes win total was the most in college hockey history at the time of his retirement. Coghlin is also only the seventh coach in college hockey history to be at least 400 games over.500. Coghlin joins Jerry York (primarily Boston College), Ron Mason (primarily Michigan State), Jack Parker (Boston Univ.), Red Berenson (Michigan), Bob Peters (Bemidji State) and Bob Emery (Plattsburgh State) as those who reached that plateau. Home Sweet Cornerstone: St. Norbert is 245-30-13 all-time at the Cornerstone Community Center, which includes a 9-4-1 mark there its first season in the building in 2000-01. St. Norbert is 225-22-10 in its last 257 games at the Cornerstone Community Center. The Green Knights were an enviable 16-0-1 at home this season, the only blemish a 2-2 tie with Manhattanville on Nov. 24. The Green Knights had a 25-game home winning streak - the secondlongest in NCAA Division III history - snapped with a 2-2 tie to Gustavus Adolphus on Nov. 4, 2011. St. Norbert also owns the NCAA Division III record with a 36-game home winning streak set Oct. 25, 2002 to Oct. 29, 2004. In the last 17 seasons, the Green Knights are a sparkling 236-25-12 at the Cornerstone, with three losses and one tie coming to national champion UW-Superior during the 2001-02 season. Under Tim Coghlin, St. Norbert is 324-52-19 at home, which includes games at Brown County Arena, Resch Center and De Pere Ice Arena. Tough After Two: St. Norbert had an 83-game unbeaten streak when leading after two periods snapped in a 3-2 overtime loss to Adrian on Jan. 26. The Green Knights were 81-0-2 since the semester break of the 2013-14 season when leading after two periods. Under Tim Coghlin, St. Norbert is an astounding 288-2-3 at home when up after two periods. St. Norbert had a home unbeaten streak when leading after two periods of 200 games (197-0-3) before it was snapped by UW-Stout in a 4-3 overtime loss on Feb. 7, 2009. The Green Knights also lost 5-4 to Lawrence on Dec. 7, 2013 when leading after two periods. At home, St. Norbert is 306-3-4 in school history when leading after two periods. The Green Knights' lone other loss when up after two periods on their own ice came on Nov. 18, 1989 in a 3-1 loss to Augsburg when St. Norbert lost a 1-0 lead. Gimme Five: St. Norbert saw a 273-game unbeaten streak when scoring at least five goals spanning nearly 19 years end in a 6-5 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3, 2015. The Green Knights were 266-0-7 when scoring five goals since a 7-5 loss to Bemidji State in De Pere on Jan. 12, 1996. The Green Knights are 33-0 since that loss to Stevens Point, making them 299-1-7 over their last 307 games when scoring at least five goals in a game. St. Norbert is 6-29-6 in its last 41 games when allowing five goals or more dating back to the 1996-97 season. The last such win came in a wild 8-7 double-overtime win over UMass- Boston on March 25, 2016 at the NCAA Division III Frozen Four in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Green Knights have allowed five goals just 28 times in their last 493 games. St. Norbert has never allowed 10 goals in a game during Tim Coghlin s 747-game tenure. Western Wonders: The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association placed a representative in the NCAA Division III championship game 23 out of a possible 35 times. St. Norbert has made nine title game appearances, coming in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Bemidji State did it twice (1985-86), UW-River Falls three times (1988, '93, '94), UW-Stevens Point six times (1989-93, '98), Mankato State once (1991), UW-Superior four times (1994, '97, '99, 2002) and UW-Eau Claire once (2013). NCHA teams have squared off for the national championship three times (1991 - Stevens Point vs. Mankato State, 1993 - Stevens Point vs. River Falls, 1994 - River Falls vs. Superior). UW-Stevens Point (1989, '90, '91, '93), UW-River Falls (1988, '94), Bemidji State (1986), UW-Superior (2002), St. Norbert (2008, 11, 12, 14, 18) and UW-Eau Claire (2013) have all won Division III national titles while playing under the NCHA banner. River Falls lost to Union in the 1984 quarterfinals and St. Norbert lost to St. Thomas in the 2005 quarterfinals. St. Norbert s 4-3 win over Adrian in the 2011 national championship game marked the first All-West Region final since 1994, when UW-River Falls beat UW-Superior 6-4 for the title.
